The Salvation Army “Doing the Most Good”

Mission Statement: The Salvation Army, an International movement, is an Evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. It’s message is based on the Bible. It’s ministry is motivated by the love of God. It’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in his name without discrimination. The word salvation reveals the overall purpose of the Salvation Army - to motivate all people to embrace the salvation provided to them in Christ. The word army indicates that the organization is a fighting force, constantly at war with the powers of evil. These battles are effectively waged through a ministry that

gives attention to both body and spirit. The Salvation Army is a total ministry for the total person. The Salvation Army cooperates with churches of all denominations to meet the needs of the community. A few of the many services offered include the food pantry, after school programs, summer day camp, social work, counseling, disaster relief, a thrift store, and Christmas assistance.

Summer Camp Programs Thousands of children from low-income families enjoy fresh air, exercise and new friendships at annual

summer camp programs. The camping experience is more than just a pleasant vacation. Children learn new skills and self-reliance; trained counselors who understand their emotional needs and problems help them to mature.

Christmas Assistance The traditional red kettle is an integral part of the Christmas scene, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless, in keeping with the spirit of the season. Donations provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need. Volunteers distribute gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes, and shelters are open for sit-down dinners. Many struggling families receive aid over a period of months after the Christmas season as well.

Elder Services Each year thousands of older adults are served by The Salvation Army. In corps community centers throughout the nation, older adults gather to share interests, develop new skills and enjoy the company of their peers. The Salvation Army meets their needs through educational classes, day care, hot-lunch programs and pre-retirement seminars – to name a few. Each center provides a variety of activities to meet diverse needs.

Get Involved There are countless ways to support your local Salvation Army. Whether you can donate time, financial support, prayer, an extra car, airline miles, clothing, furniture, or other household goods, your gifts are investments that will be repaid many times through the lives changed every day. From its inception, The Army has relied heavily on volunteers who support it’s programs. Often referred to as “the army behind The Army,” volunteers play a crucial role in providing quality social services for the entire community. Through the skills and experience they bring, volunteers are able to change lives, uplift families and support communities throughout our nation every day. To get involved locally, or learn more information, please call or visit the Salvation Army Worship and Community Center, 302 Court St., Albert Lea. 507-373-5710.

Albert Lea Trades & Labor Assembly Senior Housing, Inc.

Senior HouSing The purpose of Albert Lea Trades and Labor Assembly Senior Housing Inc., which owns Senior Court and Senior Towers in Albert Lea, is to provide a decent, clean, safe, sanitary, and affordable environment for the elderly person to live in. Both Senior Court and Senior Tower accept tenants age 62+, or disabled tenants age 55+, and offer Section 8 assistance availability. Senior Court also offers Section 236 assistance availability. Senior Court opened in 1971 and offers a total of seventy-two apartments with forty-three efficiency and thirty-seven one bedroom apartments. Senior Tower opened 1981. It’s eighty one bedroom apartments include five wheelchair handicap accessible apartments and seven semi-handicap accessible apartments. All utilities are paid except the tenants’ personal telephone. If you are interested in living at Senior Towers or Senior Court or have questions regarding available assistance you can inquire directly with the resident manager, Sandy Stephens, at 507-373-5391.

What are housing choice (Section 8) vouchers? The housing choice voucher program is the federal government’s major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the local public housing agency (PHA) on behalf of the participating family/tenant. The family/tenant then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program, which is 30% of their adjusted monthly income. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the local PHA.

Am I eligible? Eligibility for a housing voucher is determined by the PHA based on the total annual gross income and family size and is limited to US citizens and specified categories of non-citizens who have eligible immigration status. In general, the family’s/tenant’s income may not exceed 50% of the median income for the county where they choose to live. By law, a PHA must provide 75% of its voucher to applicants whose incomes do not exceed 30% of the area median income. The local PHA serving your community can provide you with income limits for your area and family size. For additional information on the housing voucher program and other subsidy programs, contact the Albert Lea Housing and Redevelopment Authority at 507-377-4375 or visit their website at www.albertleahra.com.

CREATING AN ECO-FRIENDLY AND GREENER HOME It is actually much easier to create a green eco-friendly home than what a lot of us may think. Many people are discouraged by thinking that it requires a lot of efforts, time and money to switch to eco-friendly products, but actually, working towards an eco-friendly home is not that difficult. For any good or service that you purchase today, you will often find that there is an eco-friendly alternative. You can also cut back on your household waste by using less disposable items and using more reusable material, like using reusable spoons instead of using disposable plastic spoons. There is an impact on the environment for every little thing we do in our daily life, and if we shift towards eco-friendly products, we can contribute to saving our environment and work towards sustainability. The word eco-friendly means products that do not harm the earth or environment. These products, also called sustainable products, provide benefits for the people economically, socially, environmentally, while preserving public health. These products are environmentally safe from extraction of raw materials to production, consumption and disposal. Making the change to environmentally safe, green products is really simple for any individual who wishes to contribute to the sustainability of the environment. By using more environmentally safe products, we reduce pollution and contamination of the natural resources such as the air, water, and soil. One way to great way to make your home more eco-friendly is by swapping out products used to clean your home. Many conventional

• Eco-friendly due to extended life • 8 year warranty • Made from recyclable • materials in the USA • HEPA Filtration • Actually cleans the air while you vacuum!

cleaning products in the market contain several toxic chemicals and may be harmful for the environment. Even though they make our house grime free and sparkling clean, the release harmful compounds and solvents into the atmosphere whenever they are used, and therefore, they are not good for your health. A normal household uses a wide variety of products containing harmful, toxic chemicals, such as furniture cleaners and polishes, air fresheners, glass and tile cleaners, toilet cleaners, detergent, dishwashers, carpet cleaners, soap and the list goes on and on. The better option is to switch from products that contain harmful chemicals such as Phthalates, Ammonia, Chlorine and any other products that carry labels stating: “Warning, Danger, Caution or Poison” to products that contain natural ingredients such as baking soda, beeswax, vinegar, olive oil and products labeled: “no phosphates or solvents.” There are a number of cleaning products on the market today labeled eco-friendly. Another option for eco-friendly cleaning is eco-friendly vacuum cleaners. HEPA filters and bagless canisters have made vacuuming a much cleaner job. These household must-haves are continuing to improve, featuring better efficiency, noise-free operation and even recycled plastic construction. There are many other ways through which you can do your bit of saving the environment and work towards a greener home. With all these little contributions towards reducing our carbon footprints and environmental health, it can really have a big impact on the future generation for a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
