A first thought about your event in Portugal... Portugal is the right country to organise your special event, either it is a dozen people incentive or a multithousand people congress. An incentive for a small number of people can be organised practically in any area of Portugal as it is a tendency nowadays for incentives to become smaller and smarter; a bigger event, however, it’s better to expect it to be made in Porto area, Lisbon area or in the Algarve. Basing the flights in the 3 main airports, within a range of a 2 hours transfer, the choices are not only great in number but also in variety, as you can have either a seaside resort where you can have many sport & beach games, or a countryside spot where you have a lot of space for as many activities as you want. Offering good flight access, value for money and a modern 21st century infrastructure, Portugal has long been a safe and reliable destination for MICE planners and organisers. Blessed with a mild yearround climate, plenty of sunshine, excellent food and wine and some of the finest congress and accommodation facilities anywhere in the world, it has all the right ingredients for a successful conference, meeting or incentive programme. A DMC can provide local destination knowledge and ground services, as well as offering the following; Meet and Greet, Transfers / Transportation, Hotel Accommodation, Restaurants, Activities, Excursions, Conference Venues, Themed Events, Gala Dinners and Logistics. We are also able to assist with overcoming any language barriers. A DMC must be someone that you can relate to and trust, and with whom you work closely as a team, whilst we assist you on both a creative and professional level. We are often able to provide preferential rates based on the buying power that we have with their preferred suppliers. Just tell us the needs of your incentive and we will present you the best solution!

A destination Geographical data

Porto and the North

Located in the Southwest of Europe, between the parallels 37º and 42º of North latitude and the meridians 6º and 9.5º West of Greenwich, Portugal is limited by Spain at North and East (1215 km of border) and at South and West by the Atlantic Ocean (700 km of coast).

If you look for that special charm only old European cities have, Porto is your choice, as this is an old yet at the same time contemporary city. Also in what Hotels are concerned, you may choose from an 18th. Century Palace like Pousada do Porto or the modern glass, steel and marble Sheraton Porto Hotel

The National territory has an area of 88 797,365 km2 including the Madeira and Azores Archipelagos, and the continental territory has a maximum length of 561 Km and a maximum width of 218 Km. The Cape of Roca is the westernmost point of Continental Portugal. The prolongation of the Mountains of the Iberian Peninsula are distinctive for two types of relief, at North and at South of the Tejo river.

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, the city is as popular today for its history and culture as it has always been for the famous Port wine. Key attractions such as the 12thcentury Cathedral and the magnificent São Francisco Church finely illustrate the city’s ancient patrimony, while the old wine lodges on the south bank of the River Douro are tailormade for group dinners and cocktail receptions. Other versatile venues include the centrallylocated Stock Exchange Palace and hightech Europarque congress centre south of the city. But much of Oporto’s appeal lies in the fact that it remains a largely undiscovered destination, a place that most people have never visited before. And with a modern infrastructure and several topend hotels to choose from, there’s plenty of appeal for the interna tional MICE market. Also for a special event a cruise in the Douro river can help the success.

At North, the relief is hillier, with steep slopes cut by deep valleys. Between the rivers Minho and Douro, there is a mountain chain (GalaicoDuriense) that reaches the coastal line. Between the rivers Douro and Tejo, we can find the highest peaks, at the Serra do Marão and Serra da Estrela (2.000 m). At South of the Tejo, there is the biggest area of flat lands, with rare mountains, being the most important here the Serra Algarvia. There is also some swampy lands at the Tejo and Sado valleys.

Northern Portugal is a beautiful region steeped in tradition and full of local history. Stretching from the green Minho region to the enchanting Douro Valley, it is a green and pleasant land of mountains, ancient cities and extraordinary natural beauty. Besides all the activities possible in this region, the medieval dinner in Feira Castle is a special event for Incentives. The terraced slopes of the River Douro are the real home of Port wine, which is carried downriver to the lodges of Oporto before being shipped around the world. Most of the winemakers in the Douro Valley are well prepared to receive small groups for guided tours and winetasting sessions, while cruise companies operating along the river can cater for corporate functions and pre and postevent excursions. Also, in due time, it is possible to organize a group to participate in the Harvest in Douro Valley, the oldest demarcated area in the world!

A destination Lisboa Region Boasting an ultramodern infrastructure and elegant oldworld charm, Lisboa offers a fresh alternative to the more regular conference and incentive destinations around the world. The Portuguese capital exudes an inviting warmth and geniality that most European capitals have longsince outgrown. And blessed with appealing architecture and 3,000 years of history, the city can compete for any type of MICE event, large or small. Lisboa is packed with possibilities for group activities, both in the city and along the resort areas of the Estoril Coast. Options include dining in restored palaces and other historic monuments such as the imposing Castle of São Jorge and the 16thcentury Jerónimos Monastery in Belém. Various other venues such as the Beato Convent and Estufa Fria botanical gardens also cater for a wide range of corporate functions.

Algarve The new exhibition centre located in the heart of the city’s Park of Nations is a rich legacy of the Expo ’98 World Exposition. With four pavilions covering a gross area of 100,000 squaremetres, the centre is on a par with many of the world’s leading fairgrounds, and next to it there is Pavilhão Atlântico, with a capacity for up to 13.500 people in convention setup. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, the Lisbon Congress Centre has recently been redeveloped for largescale events. Being Lisboa the capital of the country, it has of course a good hotel capacity, good communication means and a large number of events possibilities, within a 2 hours driving from the airport, with some completely different type atmospheres, climate and vegetation, from the hot and dry Alentejo to the wet and chilly Sintra, from the seaside to the countryside.

Blessed with numerous golf courses, luxurious beach resorts and quaint little fishing villages, the Algarve is a dream destination for conference and incentive organisers. Arade Congress Centre with a capacity for up to 1.000 delegates and Portimão Arena for up to 6.000 people, are the region’s most important and most modern places for congresses. Yearround sunshine and 150 kilometres of sandy shoreline make the Algarve a haven not just for holidays but also for interesting group programmes. Inhabited since the time of the Phoenicians, it was the Moors who left the most visible legacy a fact that is mostly evident in the region’s place – names and architecture. Bordered on two sides by the Atlantic, the Algarve is divided from the rest of Portugal by a series of lowlying mountains. In the east, the Guadiana River forms a scenic border with neighbouring Spain. Accommodation capacity is not a problem in the Algarve as there are plenty of Hotels throughout the region, in the diverse categories and types of atmosphere.

A destination Thermal Baths

Horses

Golf

From North to South there are around 30 different places where we can find thermal waters in Portugal, some of them found and developed by the Romans when they were occupying the Iberian Peninsula!

Equestrian activity in Portugal is a tradition established long before the early days of military equitation and in which present equestrian sports are rooted.

Portugal is already a leading destination for golfers in Europe, and the number of golf courses is increasing, as every year there are new courses opening.

The medicinal waters are used to cure or prevent a great number of diseases, of the respiratory, muscle and skeletal, dermatological, digestive and circulatory systems and others. Also in some places, there is also the possibility to make physiotherapy. In the last few years there has been an increase in the number of Thermal baths offering also spa and well足being treatments. Besides these thermal / medicinal waters, there is also a wide choice for spas in Hotels all over Portugal.

Portugal is among the few countries in the world where professional equestrian activity has been kept alive uninterruptedly thanks to Bullfighting, thus insuring that we keep this culture and tradition from the 18th century. Though equestrian centres scattered all over the country have different aims and purposes, they all offer horse足riding tuition. To appreciate the real scope of equestrian activities in Portugal, it is necessary to look at them and their supporting infrastructures in context. This is the role of an Incoming agent: to help foreign clients to choose the best infrastructures at the best location, either concerning accommodation or other important issues such as roads, interesting spots in the area or climate.

The many IAGTO awards won by Portugal Golf courses and resorts are the proof that this is a top destination for golfers. But when in Portugal, it is worthwhile to visit the many important monuments and taste our gastronomy, specially our delightful desserts and our always足fresh fish and shellfish. The incredible 300 days of sunshine per year and the landscape give to Portugal the natural conditions the Golf architects seek and are inspired by. In addition, it is also possible to combine a city life with Golf, as in many Portuguese cities, like Lisboa and Porto, there are some golf courses within the city limits. Easily reached, Portugal is a paradise where the golfer can play almost every day of the year. Every course offers new and surprising landscapes, backed up by excellent services and facilities.
