Contemporary cities are facing a deep and hidden process of change in its shapes driven by economic and environmental crisis. Because of these two factors, but also as a consequence of the huge information technology revolution that is progressively substituting many solid built spaces with not material domains, cities are now dealing with a new category of urban spaces; Those spaces of various sizes and category can be grouped together by the status of “abandoned,” “neglected,” and “vacant.”

The thesis aimed to develop a prototype to map abandoned areas and buildings by semantic analysis of different sets of data; its potential application in mapping and managing those areas and buildings can avoid either on-site field survey method or use of regulations, as they can become soon out-ofdate, due to their ineffective accuracy and poor efficiency in time and costs.

Computer-powered analysis of a large and various sets of data is one of the most significant methods to let urbanism and urban environment government to look forward to an improved and responsive planning process, in order to better meet the requirements of the city and its citizens.

Nowadays new technologies are increasingly leading the ways we physically interact and get emotionally involved in the real world.

This digital revolution has come along with an increasing number of leftovers: jobs and habits are the two most evident spheres of this shifting, but the effect on the space we inhabit is worthy of concern too.

Cities have been drifting away from their previous status for almost two decades due to both the economic crisis and the digital technology revolution; this process outputs a huge quantity of vacant lots and buildings, waiting to be reactivated.

What if we foster the coexistence between new technologies and the built heritage, aiming to create a unique entity able to reactivate vacancies? The knowledge we are able to both gather and manage and the ability to generate performing hubs of public space experience are the leading drivers for a temporary, sustainable and open-source solution to the topic of vacancies.

The research is based on a specific process that starts from a sensing phase - the process of mapping vacancies - and ends with a set of strategies that shapes HE.RE., an architectural and digital entity that achieve reactivation by gathering citizen’s feedback and by creating public space.

The research in its first phase highlights the effectiveness of data-driven analysis of the urban built environment, and gives a solid proof of how much we would be able today to expand our knowledge about any urban dynamics. The acting programs open up many challenges which offer so far nothing but visions about their success since they are strongly dependent on citizens’ will to make a resolute turn toward a new way of managing and experiencing the urban space.

HE.RE. - Scenarios HOW CAN WE DISPLAY AN EVOLVING SPATIAL PROGRAM? What if we take a snapshot of HE.RE., like a single frame of her existence during a specific time in her hacking process.

I guess it is the only way to correctly show how public space would look like during HE.RE.’s action. The reason lays in the HE.RE.’s ability of managing and being a catalyst of many strategies and actions through the time; the vision is hence a combination of different scenarios. Going deeper in the answer, since HE.RE. is both a AI-driven device and a open-source DIY platform for urban activities there are to many variable that define a vision, which will be evolving as well.

A gradual change in accessibility characterize the environment and landscape system of the Salè river. Following the flow of the river, the level of accessibility decreases, limited by the wildness of the natural element and the topography.

The project takes advantage of the hostile nature of the places, which becomes a fundamental element of exploration experience just few steps away from the city. Interventions not trace paths or delimit spaces, but seek rather to suggest an unusual way to experience the landscape. The user is called to live the park as the protagonist, calling itself the right path, guided by the suggestions of the landscapes. The result is a multiplicity of scenarios, resulting from the dialogue between the nature and the artifice. The devices installed - Virgilio - are the technical elements supporting the activities of the park; the scalability of the elements allows, in fact, extreme versatility, without compromising the unitary intervention identity. The installation process is based on its versatility and sustainability, found at different scales: the definition of the trails can be tackled step by step, consistent with the financial resources, experimenting with forms of self-management on the part of citizens and of contamination with adjacent properties (diffuse hospitality), or dialogue with the city parks system.

In recent decades, the contemporary city has been the stage of more or less tangible changes, driven mainly by economic and technological factors. The gaps left by former industrial activities and underdeveloped area internal to the consolidated urban fabric are one of the output of this changes.

In the city of Trento this occurs mainly along the axis of the railroad that in addition to seeing the settle of increasingly marginal importance activities is a concrete and perceptible impediment to the link between the old town and the shore the Adige River.

The “supersuperficie” wants to be a performing urban device, able to model itself on the critical areas on which to enable the recycling process, while being dynamic and responsive to the environment.

Most importantly, the “supersuperficie” set itself as an exchange interface between the river and the city. The supersuperficie is closely related to the elements called the Folies: static and independent nodes that elevate the existing crossings spatial experience and defining a system of urban landmarks. The supersuperficie is divided into 3 groups: the THRESHOLD, the PERFORMABLE TAPE and the LIMIT, defined by the relationship with the railway and the surrounding environment. They assume a variable conformation longitudinally to rail due to the fragmentation in the plugs. This facility allows you to implement extremely flexible strategies and tactics aimed at the repossession of the abandoned spaces in a participatory and shared process.

The project is based on a reflection about the typological characteristics a factory of contemporary culture should have.

The intent is to create a catalyst space able to connect the world of research with the business world and make them accessible to the citizens by constituting a material internet space.

The container-prison has some architectural features discordant with those that are supposed to represent a space that is the exaltation of freedom and opportunity; the symmetry, the organization in converging wings, the uniqueness of the access system, the visual and spatial closure to the city are nodes which the compositional process works on.

The design process consists of a cutting along an axis parallel to the symmetry line of the building, which allows the insertion of a “flat space�, able to transpose the flows coming from the upper town and redistribute it all in the interior of the building and the urban fabric; it represents the disruption device which set the prison building as a new functional space by cancelling the symmetry and by making new space which follows open source paradigms.

Il processo progettuale scaturisce da una riflessione sui canoni della tradizione costruttiva ad alta quota.

La rielaborazione è finalizzata alla definizione di un nuovo modo di vivere la montagna, senza però abbandonare gli elementi primari, quali basamento in pietra e involucro in legno. Il progetto, rivisitandoli, li arricchisce di nuovi valori, instaurando relazioni con le preesistenze ed esaltando la v con paesaggio.

Attraverso la scomposizione, il basamento diventa un sistema dinamico di percezione e rivelazione dello spazio, offrendo allʼutente esperienze sensoriali inedite.

The design process starts from a reflection on the charges of high-altitude building tradition.

The revision is aimed at defining a new way to enjoy the mountains while maintaining the primary elements, such as stone-made basement and wooden case. The project, revisiting them and enriching them with new values, the establish new relations with the existing and enhancing the mimesis with the landscape. Through a selective break-down, the basement becomes a dynamic system of perception and spatial revelation, giving the user unprecedented sensory experience.

The composition of the place is based on the concept of the hut as a node of routes: their intersection defines the space by identifying a path leading to the shelter and the “discovery” of the landscape progressive.

The transformation of the base from monolithic shape to a in complex system of flat sheets defines the relations with the morphology of the terrain which penetrates the building and defines the articulation of outdoor spaces.

The breakdown of the base accompanies the wooden casing; the relationship between the two volumes above ground, in fact, determines the perception of configuring an agorà-like place in the Alpine landscape.

La composizione della facciata si basa sulla giustapposizione di tre layer: il basamento, elemento di forte matericità e orizzontalità; la i volumi cavi delle zone notte; lʼinvolucro in listelli di larice che oltre a conferire verticalità, danno uniformità alle volumetrie fuori terra.
