EXHIBITION PROJECTS OF HONG KONG

- Aldo Aymonino Plug -

Island

Asylum seekers and refugees (ASRs) have limited rights in Hong Kong and they are a group of marginalized and ignored population. Due to the backlog of the screening process, it is not unusual for an ASR to stay in Hong Kong for years, some of them have stayed in Hong Kong for over ten years. They are prohibited to engage in any form of businesses or jobs, except rare exceptions. During the lengthy screening process and long waiting time, ASRs can only live under limited government and NGO subsidies. OUR PROJECT aims to design an infrastructural and housing system, based on Lamma island, that could be able to adapt itself to requirements, needs and size of the inhabitants. The project is organized to change its form and structure acquiring different shapes and solutions. This capacity descends from the container-module, with which we chose to design all the units (housing and commercial ones). The container-module takes advantage of the storage operation they use in commercial harbours: prefab modules are set or taken away with overhead travelling cranes and traditional cranes set on the main structure. This building scheme allows the system to change its shape and structure very quickly. There are two different types of housing spaces dipending on the length of stay. The first solution for semipermanent stay is composed by 3 contaienrs and it contains 5 peolple, the second one ( for short stay) is madeof six modules and it contains 24 people and common spaces.

GREEN GATE

- Antonella Gallo A John Hejduk inspiration

For the new gate of Padua i projected a park with two architectural elements, the boardwalk and the Belvedere, are inspered by the atypical structures disegned by the American architect J. Hejduk. Their aim is to stimulate the curiosity of the peolple walking through the park. The belvedere is a vertical element which stands out between the branches of the trees. At the top of the tallest liberty building apperas his “head”which looks like a “serious bearded monk”. The horizontal element is a boardwalk which looks like a dragon layed on water. The first is covered with metal panels that descend to the ground like a long habit, instead the metallic structure in the inside shows its coldness and entirety. The second on one side shows its metal and concrete structure, and on the other is covered with large metal scales, creating two faces of the same element that, if viewed from different points, stimulates the imagination of the observer. The portal inserted between the two Art Nouveau buildings is inspired by the characteristics that the area had during its industrial period, in fact it looks like a reticular walkway supported by two large reinforced concrete pillars of different sizes. The largest cylinder, which is hollow, is placed in the paved part and tries to turn the space around itself. The smallest one rises from the “wooded” area like a tree trunk. The portal is half cut off by the “forest” that enters the square between the buildings creating a natural tunnel , the walkway parapet becomes part of the nature that reappropriates the area.

NEW YORK

- Aldo Aymonino - Sebastian Irarrazaval Urban Carpet

The plan of action always considers a couple of parallels roads. These roads will be orthogonal to Roosevelt Avenue, which can be seen as the current hub of the whole area. Our will to develop the new system ortho-gonally to Roosevelt Avenue descend from the need to lead to an urban network grounded in interaction, exchange and medley of commercial activities, knowledges and various ethnic groups. This particular need comes from the lack of cohesion between almost every block of the entire area. The strategy consists of the closing to the traffic of one of the two roads, and the superimposition of an urban “carpet” on it. The road will become pedestrian, and it will hold different and various public places. These places will be defined through the creation, in the carpet, of excavations and plates with several heights and depths. The urban carpets will be positioned close to the six metro stations of the subway line 7, from “Roo-sevelt Ave-Jackson Heights” to “111 St”. Every carpet will be appointed to a color: the color’s meaning, toghether with the new buildings, will define the function of the carpet and its buildings. The new buildings will be built at the far ends of the blocks touched by the carpet. The system of excavations and plates will intertwine with a public green belt and it will build links with the new buildings and put together the surrounding area. The aim of the project is to create a network that could link all the carpets and make them become a single system. Indeed each carpet is intended to be a section of the whole system. Thanks to a free wifi service and to a smartphone app, wherever the people will be (either inside or outside the system), they will be able to get to know of whatever happens in other places of the program; most of all, they will be able to organize every kind of action that the carpets allows them to do. It means for example buy tickets for a show, or schedule a meeting at an amministrative office. The wifi connection will let everyone surf the net free of charge, throughout the study area and potentially the whole city. Besides, the smartphone app will allow everyone direct access to public info services such as buses and trains time-tables, news about scheduled events, traffic flows, weather and so on. The carpets are fitted with basic tools as info point, electricy and, as we have already said, free wifi connection. Depending on the features of the various belts, the carpets have their own peculiarity, like a playground in response to a store selling things for children or a fitness trail which work also as link between different sport facilities.

LIGHTENING THE VALLEY

- Benno Albrecht Landmark

This project is located in Piemonte in Val Pellice, a valley in the north of Italy characterized by a strong historical past. The project aims to the possibility of recovery of small historic Italian centers. In fact during 1600’s the 700 meters line was considered a limit above which all those who were of Waldensian religion, which was considered eratic, could profess and live. This elevation therefore became a social, political, cultural and religious boundary. Therefore we tried to highlight what was the historical limit with a new limit, trying not to make it physical and insuperable, but visual, recalling the memory and the history of the place. The project therefore becomes a luminous path along the 700 m level curve, in particular it is marked out with the insertion of luminous structures with different heights, according to the place where they are located in the landscape. These elements are illuminated by the solar panel on the top, the larger structures can produce electricity in order to give energy to the valley. They are present both within the city, as in Bobbio Pellice, both in the most forested parts and in some flat areas, thus delineating a “high altitude path. Its intent is to give back to the valley a strong historical character without radical interventions.

VENICE STADIUM

- Sebastian Irarrazaval Underground

The imperfection or “descalce”, in Spanish, as a design moment becomes a stimulus to find a solution. The limit increases the projectual possibilities and stimulates creativity for the solution of the difficulties we may face during the projectation. Venice is a city where the overlap of imperfections gives life to astonishment. Projects are based on imperfection as a supporting element, to make sure that things do not coincide teaches us how to make them coincide in order to solve them. when things do not fit, they might create opportunities, interesting project spaces. we started from ‘hybridization of two structures with completely different functions such as a stadium and a “war machine”, in our case the section of a trench is used as module due to the rebuilt of the stadium. The stadium does not have any visual impact off the ground. On the one hand also has a ramp that directly connected with a dock for ships. Inside the structure, it was decided to organize the new sports center of Venice as well as the stadium, including gyms, swimming pools, tennis courts, squash, etc.

3D VISUALIZATION

- Buclassroom Immagining the future

Architectural Visualization Workshop is designed for architects, students or cg artists who want to know in depth all about lighting, texturing with Cinema 4d + Vray and advanced postproduction with Adobe Photoshop. The power of VrayforC4d 3.4 allows you to create high-end visualization with great workflow in a professional way. SurfaceSPREAD is a great scatter plugin we use to create vegetation in our scene. Sometimes environment is one of the most interesting and difficult stuff to create in 3d. There are no images without postproduction. I learned to set a professional postproduction file with all the adjustments layer and final touch to creat breathtaking pictures. I received an official VrayforC4d certificate.
