OIL AND FATS PROCESSING As biodiesel gains more and more importance as an attractive fuel, the price and availability of choice feedstock will become less available and more expensive. Resulting in more frequent use of lower cost, poorer quality oils and fats implemented in the production of biodiesel fuel. Treating these oils prior to the manufacturing process of biodiesel is crucial to overall costs of production and the quality of the end product biodiesel.
SRS offers two different types of Oil and Fats Processing Technologies that are scalable, skid mounted systems which can prepare your feedstocks for biodiesel processing.

BOTH OF THESE TECHNOLOGIES ARE USED TO IMPROVE THE COLOR, OXIDATIVE STABILITY, AND ANISIDINE VALUE OF FEEDSTOCK OIL AND TO REMOVE IMPURITIES SUCH AS… · TRACES OF SOAP · PEROXIDES · ALDEHYDES
· KEYTONES · METAL IONS
DURING THESE PROCESSES, FEEDSTOCK OIL IS TREATED BY EITHER PROCESS TO ELIMINATE IMPURITIES LEFT BEHIND LIKE… · SOAPS · PHOSPHATIDES · PHOSPHORIC ACID · PIGMENTS
· OXIDATION PRODUCTS · TRACE METAL COMPLEXES (IRON & COPPER)
PRESENCE OF THESE IMPURITIES WILL CAUSE ISSUES · INCREASE CONSUMPTION OF SODIUM METHYLATE · LEAD TO YIELD LOSS · FLUCTUATING CONVERSION · INJECTOR PLUGGING
· POISON THE CATALYST · POOR QUALITY · COLD SOAK ISSUES · SHORTEN THE SHELF LIFE
USING EITHER PROCESS ON INCOMING FEED OILS ALLOWS YOU TO USE ANY FEEDSTOCK · TALLOW · LARD · YELLOW GREASE · VIRGIN OIL · POULTRY FAT · CHOICE WHITE GREASE
ADVANTAGES OF OIL DISTILLATION AND BLEACHING & DEGUMMING · LOW ENERGY CONSUMPTION · LOW OPERATIONAL AND MAINTENANCE COSTS · STURDY AND RELIABLE CONTROL SYSTEM · LONG SERVICE LIFE · MINIMAL FOOTPRINT · LOW INVESTMENT COSTS · ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AS NO WASTEWATER OR SOAP STOCK OCCUR.
GLYCERIN PURIFICATION Glycerin currently has over 1500 known uses in many different industries ranging from foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics (USP grade glycerin) to paints, coatings and other industrial types of applications (technical grade glycerin). It continues to be one of the most versatile and valuable byproducts created during biodiesel production.
Glycerin in Biodiesel Glycerin naturally occurs during the biodiesel production process and is specifically produced in the transesterification process. The glycerin produced at this stage is crude glycerin and is about 80% pure still containing contaminants like soap, methanol and water. In order to turn this crude glycerin into a usable state for existing or emerging uses, a purification process must take place. During this refinement process residual organic matter, water, salt, methanol, and odors are removed.
There are many different types of glycerin grades ranging from crude glycerin to refined glycerin (pharmaceutical grade).
SRS' High-Puritiy Glycerin Purification System can -Produce high-purity glycerin in high yield. -Maximize energy efficiency. -Take crude glycerin with an approximate purity rating of 80% to a technical grade glycerin of >98%. -Create a new profit center for your biodiesel plant Purifying your crude glycerin by-product will give your biodiesel plant the opportunity to create a new profit center. -The value of glycerin is based on its purity range. The higher the purity levels equates to a higher return. -Eliminate hazardous disposal costs and environmental regulations associated with the disposal of crude glycerin. -Current crude glycerin price are at an all time low.

BIODIESEL METHANOL RECOVERY SRS Biodiesel’s high-purity methanol recovery system has the solution for recovering your unused methanol. This unique unit is unlike first-generation vaccum based systems that suffered from low recovery rates, water contamination, glycerin and biodiesel carryover in the recovered methanol, and high energy usage. SRS’s true fractional distillation columns efficiently recover >99.9% of all unused methanol, returning it clean and dry to your bulk methanol and no off-site reprocessing costs. In fact, your recovered methanol is often of a higher purity than the new methanol you purchase.
THE SRXC-SERIES REMOVES METHANOL FROM THE GLYCERIN STREAM • >99.9% PURITY RANGE • TYPICAL PURITY OF CRUDE GYCERIN IS 80-85% • REDUCES GLYCERIN STREAM TO <0.05% METHANOL (NON-HAZARDOUS) • AUTOMATIC SELF-ADJUSTING CONTROL SYSTEM FOR VARIABLE PARAMETERS • MODULARIZED SKID FOR EASY INSTALLATLON • CONTINUOUS OPERATION • PRE-WIRED, PRE-PIPED AND TESTED PRIOR TO DELIVERY AT CUSTOMER SITE.

ACID ESTERIFICATION
HIGH FFA PRETREATMENT
THE FSP SYSTEM Whether you are upgrading an existing biodiesel plant or building a turnkey biodiesel plant, having your plant be multi-feedstock capable is essential to giving you a competitive advantage. Adding High Free Fatty Acid (FFA) Pretreatment opens up a world of new feedstock opportunities. Whether it be animal-fat based feedstocks such as beef tallow, chicken fats, or one of the new emerging feedstocks such as Algae-oil or Jatropha, they all share one thing in common. These readily available, less expensive feedstocks all contain a significant amount of FFA too high for base transesterification and must be removed prior to the transesterification process. SRS offers two different Esterification technologies that are scalable, continuous flow, skidmounted systems which can front-end any existing biodiesel system, efficiently converting FFA into usable oil with no yield loss

Feedstock pretreatment/acid esterification are as important as transesterification and without it biodiesel plants will operate with little to no profits.
TRANSESTERIFICATION TRANSESTERIFICATION FOR BIODIESEL CONVERSION Transesterification is a chemical reaction used for the conversion of triglycerides (fats) contained in oils, (Feedstocks) into usable biodiesel. Biodiesel produced by the process of transesterification has a much lower viscosity, making it capable of replacing petroleum diesel in diesel engines. Fats and oils from both animals and plants are composed of Triglycerides which are Esters containing three fatty acids, trihydric alcohol and glycerol. During the transesterification process, the alcohol is deprotonated with a base to make it a staunch nucleophile. USING SRS' BIODIESEL CONVERSION PROCESSER GIVES YOU THE ABILITY TO: -Feedstock flexibility allowing producers to shift between feedstocks based on market demand without hindering production. -Allows producer to mix high FFA feedstocks with lower FFA feedstocks -Produce ASTM/EN grade biodiesel from various feedstock blends HIGH QUALITY BIODIESEL: -The ability to create Biodiesel that exceeds EU & ASTM/EN Standards -Biodiesel with less viscosity and a higher cetane number -Biodiesel that offers more power and less pollution

BASE CATALYST BASE-CATALYSED TRANSESTERIFICATION
Base-Catalysed Transesterification Mechanism The transesterification reaction is base catalyzed. Any strong base capable of deprotonating the alcohol will do (e.g. NaOH, KOH, sodium methoxide, etc.), but the sodium and potassium hydroxides are often chosen for their cost. The presence of water causes undesirable base hydrolysis, so the reaction must be kept dry.
In the transesterification mechanism, the carbonyl carbon of the starting ester (RCOOR1) undergoes nucleophilic attack by the incoming alkoxide (R2O−) to give a tetrahedral intermediate, which either reverts to the starting material, or proceeds to the transesterified product (RCOOR2). The various species exist in equilibrium, and the product distribution depends on the relative energies of the reactant and product.
SOLID CATALYST TECHNOLOGY SRS’ Solid Catalyst Transesterification Process efficiently converts feedstocks to Biodiesel with 99.8% yields or higher with no acids, sodium/potassium methylate or sulfuric acid required. A 2 stage process involves the use of enzymes based solid catalyst that is capable of completing transesterification and converts 99.9% of triglycerides.
FULL CONVERSION INTO BIODIESEL: -Achieves 100% conversion of mono, di, and tri-glycerides -Conversion is completed in a 2 stage process
HIGH QUALITY GLYCERIN: -Makes industrial grade glycerin ranging from 90% pure depending on the feed stock
REDUCED ENERGY CONSUMPTION: -Estimated cost to run reactor is less than one penny for each gallon of Biodiesel produced
BIODIESEL DISTILLATION
Distilling your biodiesel produces the purest form of bioidesel possible and dramatically reduces cold filterability of most feedstocks. SRS' ASVB Distillation Column is designed for the separation of unreacted oil and impurities that carry forward with the biodiesel to the final phase of processing and can produce pure biodiesel as a distillate product.
