ENJOY EASTER AND SPRING Dear Guest, winter is over and the nicer weather will provide a perfect background for your visit of Milan. The city is ready to enjoy the Easter holidays and is in impatient wait: Expo 2015, the main event of the year (or maybe of the last ten years), is about to open. But, before May 1 and the six months dedicated to the world exposition about food and nature, there’s so much to do and to see in the big city.

April, for example is the month of the big exhibition about Leonardo da Vinci, the most important event ever organized in Italy about the genius of the Renaissance eve: arts, inventions, poetry and even mystery will be under the spotlight in the rooms of Palazzo Reale, in the heart of the city. Not so far, in Gallerie d’Italia, heading towards Teatro alla Scala from piazza Duomo, an exhibition will celebrate the anniversary of the World War I, ten years after Italian army joined the terrible fight that hurt the whole Europe in the first years of last century. Talking of La Scala, it’s time to see the superstars of ballet on stage, with Roberto Bolle and Svetlana Zakharova performing on Giselle, with the same set up that, in 2012, earned a standing ovation of 15 minutes.

But spring doesn’t mean only arts, music and culture. The milder temperature and (hopefully) the sunny days give the chance to spend time walking around the city, maybe in the small “Central Park” of Milan, the Parco Sempione not so far from the Castello Sforzesco. And, of course, don’t forget shopping and the new fashion suggestion of the top class brands of the Made in Italy style. You’ll find it all and more in this magazine. Bring it with you: it’s almost like having a concierge ready to give you the best advice anytime.

LEONARDO A TRIBUTE TO THE ARTIST AND GENIUS

T

he largest exhibition ever in Italy for the most famous genius ever that Italy ever showed to the world: Leonardo is his name, and there’s no need of other details to make him recognisable. And it’s also the name of the exhibition that will be open in Palazzo Reale, in the heart of Milan, since April 15. Probably everyone in the world knows a way to define the Tuscany-born artist, scientist and writer, who lived between Italy and France in the second half of the 15th Century.

Someone may recall the Mona Lisa, the portrait of a mysterious smiling woman, one of the most precious

paintings of the Louvre museum in Paris. Someone may remember the projects that anticipate, thousands of years in advance, the invention of submarines, helicopters, bicycles, even the use of solar energy (he built in Rome a system of mirrors that used the sunrays to heat the water). Someone may keep in mind the detail of his way of taking notes, mirror writing on paper. And someone would cite the legend born around “The Last Supper”, the big painting kept in Milan, that the “Da Vinci code” novel of Dan Brown made even more famous.

FROM THE MAIN WORLD MUSEUMS There would be a piece of it all in the exhibition promoted by the Milan City Council in partnership with Palazzo Reale and Skira. The curators Pietro C. Marani and Maria Teresa Florio are two of the leading art historians engaged in studies on the great Renaissance genius.

And the collection of paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculptures and incunabula shown to the public comes from the collections of some of the main museums of the world. Talking only of the one hunderd of autograph drawings displayed, over thirty come from the Codex Atlanticus in the Biblioteca Ambro-

siana, the major lender of works to the exhibition; thirty are kept in the Royal Library in Windsor Castle, with both the front and back visible in six cases; five from British Museum; four from the Uffizi of Florence; five from Metropolitan Museum in New York; five from the Biblioteca Reale in Turin; and others from the Morgan Library & Museum in New York and the Foundation Custodia in Paris. Some of these institutions will also be lending important drawings by contemporaries of Leonardo. Paintings include Saint Jerome in the Wilderness (Vatican Museums), the Dreyfus Madonna (Washington, National Gallery of Art), the Head of a Woman also known as La Scapiliata (Parma, Galleria Nazionale) and Portrait of a Musician (Milan, Pinacoteca Ambrosiana). Particular importance attaches to the loan of three paintings from the Louvre: La Belle Ferronière, The Annunciation and John the Baptist. “The Last Supper” is not so far away from Palazzo Reale, the noble building that faces the Duomo cathedral. But visitors of the exhibition will be able to see every detail of the fresco thanks to an interactive panel, before the breathtaking experience to see it in the “Cenacolo” of Santa Maria delle Grazie. ating hammer and mechanical loom) constructed on the basis of the master’s drawings are on loan from the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnica of Milan.

TWELVE SECTIONS The exhibit is divided in twelve sections, highlighting the key threads running through the master’s long artistic and scientific career, embracing not only the early years in Florence but also the two stays in Milan and his period in France so as to highlight various constants of his artistic and scientific vision. The exhibition will also clearly show his interdisciplinary vocation and continuous interweaving of interests. His influence will be analyzed comparing his masterpieces with the artworks of masters of Renaissance years as Antonello da Messina, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi, Paolo Uccello, Ghirlandaio, Verrocchio, Lorenzo di Credi, Antonio and Piero del Pollaiolo, Jean van Eyck, Della Robbia, Jacopo di Mariano, known as Taccola, Guido da Vigevano, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Bonaccorso Ghiberti, Giuliano da Sangallo, Bramante and various anonymous authors of the 15th and 16th century. The exhibition will be open seven days a week and on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday visitors will have access until midnight.

PALAZZO REALE THE ART CENTRE IN THE HOUSE OF KINGS

THE AUSTRIAN TOUCH In 18th century Milan was the capital of a province of the Austro-Hungaric kingdom. The palace increased its prestige thanks to the baroque ornaments and, in the last years of the century, the architect Giuseppe Piermarini projected a makeover to the neoclassic style. Since then, the kings and the queens like Marie Therese, Ferdinand I and the Savoia family (and also emperors like Napoleon) chose to live in the palace. Famous artists and painters were called to enrich the rooms with paintings, statues, ornaments and fine furniture.

THE BOMBS AND THE REBIRTH In 20th century Palazzo Reale became property of the italian state and was immediately opened to the public. But in 1943, during the huge bombings on Milan of World War II, the building was seriously damaged. The works of rebuilding and restoring lasted for decades. After fifty years Palazzo Reale has been reopened: now it hosts temporary expositions and a permanent exposition called Museo della Reggia, still not completed, that shows the various ages of the palace and, more than all, the ornaments and the masterpieces that made of this building a place worthy for kings and queens.

Palazzo Reale means royal palace. But who were the kings and queens that used to live in this fascinating building, right in the heart of the big city? First, in the Middle Age, it was the siege of the government. When the families Visconti and Sforza took place as lords of Milan, Palazzo Reale became the heart not only of the political but also of the cultural life of the city, with elegant events and sumptuous receptions.

ow do you measure the impact of an event? On the number of people involved, maybe: Salone del Mobile attracts to the pavilions of Fiera di Milano 300.000 people every year from 160 countries. Or on the relevance for the business: over 2.000 exhibitors choose the Milan fair trade to show the best of their design and furniture and to launch their more recent products. Big figures, if you add also the over 200.000 square metres of exhibition spaces. But it’s not enough to explain the hype that makes Milan for a week the world capital city of design and creativity.

Salone del Mobile is scheduled from Tuesday 14 to Sunday 19 April. The last two days of the exhibition are open to the general public, while from Tuesday to Friday the pavilions are reserved for the professionals of the interior design. The 33rd edition of the exhibition is split into three style categories: Classic, Modern and Design, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition and SaloneSatellite, will be flanked by the biennial Euroluce/International Lighting Exhibition in Pavilions 9-11 and 13-15 and Workplace3.0/SaloneUfficio, dedicated to the workspace, in Pavilions 22- 24.

In the same days, while in the big spaces of Rho Fiera thousands of visitors will collect news on the last trends of furniture, design and technology, the city will change its face for the so-called “Fuori salone”. In the heart of Milan, art galleries, offices, shops and empty flats become exhibition places for companies wor-

king in the furnishing and industrial design sectors. Currently, it is expanding into many related sectors including automotive, technology, telecommunications, art, fashion and food. It all happens mainly in the district of Brera, historically linked to what’s related to art in the city.

Visitors, in love with the atmosphere of the Salone, love to skip from the city to the Fiera. The centre of Milan and the exhibition spaces are easily

connected by the red line of underground system. The main interest is around the international exhibition, a true showcase of what’s best in the world of interior design and accessories. But there’s much to see around the main pavilions. Euroluce, the exhibition devoted to excellence in the lighting world, will include the very latest in outdoor, indoor, industrial, event/show, special use and hospital lighting solutions, lighting systems, light sources and illumination technology software and consulting. To mark the 2015 International Year of Light proclaimed by Unesco, architect Attilio Stocchi has created

“Favilla. To every light a voice” for the city of Milan – an installation/event telling the story of and exploring the essence of light.

It’s not the only artwork around the Salone: “The Walk” is a huge installation thought for the Workplace3.0 pavilions, the fair dedicated to the furnishing world of offices and public spaces. Italian architect Michele De Lucchi projected an area for showcasing ideas and design triggers for planning workspaces in their many different contemporary interpretations. «We should think of the workspace as a gymnasium for the mind, conceiving it as a place where

relationships generate new ideas and possibilities» says the architect.

In the first days of the exhibition, only professionals are admitted in the pavilions: tickets are available in advance on the website www.salonemilano.it with fees from a minimum of 23 Euros (single entrance) to 68 Euros (six entrances and weekly ticket for the underground public transport). General public will be admitted only in the weekend: 30 Euros is the minimum fee, 44 Euros is the price of the ticket valid for two people, 49 Euros is the price of the family ticket (two adults and

a minor of 18 years or less). Entrance is free at SaloneSatellite, the exhibition open in the same days of the main event but completely dedicated to young designers. The 18th edition aims to launch some new talents as it happened very often in the latest years: over 10.000 designers have been involved in this project, as well as 125 international design schools. SaloneSatellite is accessible to all the public from Tuesday 12 in pavilions 22-24 of Fiera Milano: entry point is in the Cargo 5 area for the general visitors, while professionals already in the exhibition place can get there through Workplace3.0/SaloneUfficio. Opening hours are from 9,30 am to 6,30 pm. In the city several focus points will be on with more than 100 people ready to give infomations to the visitors about the events of the Salone.

All is free obviously also in the “Fuorisalone”, the set of events that take place spontaneously in the city since the 80ies. The big numbers of this particular format of the design week witness the success: 400,000 visitors, business worth 250 millions of Euro, sector staff from 160 countries, 1.200 events registered in the city, and 1.000 companies involved.



MUDEC A NEW PLACE FOR ART: THE MUSEUM OF CULTURES

T

he newborn in the panorama of Milan culture is Mudec, open since March 27: the acronym stands for “Museo delle culture�, museum of cultures, and the purpose is to offer a house to the different world cultures, for research and entertainment in the fields of creativity and art. The building is an artwork itself: in a old steel factory of Ansaldo group, british architect David Chipperfield redesigned the spaces making of an empty place a masterpiece of industrial archaeology revived to a new life. The first factory was placed there in 1904 and around 1960 the warehouses, very close to the railway station of Porta Genova, were almost completely converted to the production of locomotives and coaches. In 1990 the area was bought by the Milan municipality with the aim to create a cultural space.

A BIG EXHIBITION SPACE The museum counts on 17.000 square metres of exhibition space, with an auditorium, a design store, rooms and labs for students and a bistrot, cafeteria and restaurant. Despite some delays in

the works (the project started more than ten years ago) and some arguing between the Milan municipality, and Chipperfield about the last finishing touchs to the building, it was time to open the doors to visitors. The timing is perfect to greet the huge number of tourists that will join the city for Expo 2015, ready to open in May. To do that, the opening goes along with two temporary exhibitions.

“Mondi a Milano” (“Worlds in Milan”) is a homage of the municipality of Milan to Expo 2015. The exhibit shows how the city embraced and divulged to a broader public the not european cultures during the most important international expositions.

The fair trades of industrial arts started in Milan in the second half of 19th Century, following the example of the international universal expositions. In the first decades of the 20th Century the model changed giving birth to the Biennials and Triennials.

The visitors will discover the tastes that drove the ethnographic collections ready to be part of the permanent exhibition of the Mudec.

It will be also a travel back in time through manufacts, paintings, graphic and printed artworks, posters, photographs that will describe the mood of past times.

THE EXHIBIT ON AFRICA “Africa, la terra degli spiriti” (Africa, the land of spirits) is dedicated to African art from the Middle Age until today. The visitors will see over 200 masterpieces that compare the artworks of the tradition cultural and religious of Africa with other works more famous among the Western culture. The exhibition will show the formal rules of African art, not so different from the rules that drove the way of painting or sculpting in the European studios. The aesthetic value of those forms of art conditioned and influenced the avant-garde of

last century, as in Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti.

The exhibitions will be open until summer: “Mondi a Milano” will close on July 19, “Africa la terra degli spiriti” on August 30. In the meanwhile the new museum will start all the scheduled activities: the permanent collection will have a temporary arrangement in the depots of the museum. Visitors are allowed only with the help of a guide. Only after Expo 2015, in autumn, the collection will find a permanent place in the halls of the former factory. Close to the museum, the Mudec Academy will offer full time and part time masters for students, interactive labs and events with a particular cure to the italian excellence in arts, tourism, fashion, food and wine. Also children will be welcomed in a very special place: the “junior space” will offer multimedial laboratories to develop the creativity and the knowledge of different cultures.

ART AND WORLD WAR I, EXHIBIT FOR AN ANNIVERSARY

«I

vividly remember the stories my grandfather told me abourt the carnage of the First World War, which people tend to forget was one of the worst massacres in human history»: this quote of the italian writer Antonio Tabucchi explains very well what happened in Europe one century ago: pain, fear, deprivation have been the prevalent feelings of those years, alongside with pride, patriottism, energy, that drove many young lives to push themselves to the fighting frontlines with simple bravery. One hundred years after the first gunshot (Italian army was sent to war against Austria on May 23, 1915), an exhibition will show the way all the strong feelings around the fighting stimulated the creativity of the artists. “La Grande Guerra, arte e artisti al fronte” (“The Great War, art and artists on the frontline”) is hosted in Gallerie d’Italia, an exposition space in the heart of Milan from April 1 until August 23.

The Milan exhibit is part of a broader project financed by the cultural branch of Intesa San Paolo bank: the company is the owner of the two old historic buildings of Gallerie d’Italia, halfway throu-

gh the way between piazza Duomo and Teatro alla Scala, but also of two other palaces in Vicenza (about 50 kms West of Venice) and Naples, both turned into museums and cultural centres. For the anniversary of the beginning of World War I, Gallerie d’Italia has mobilised researchers, art historians and restorers to set up three exhibitions on the same topic in the three museums. The number of artworks displayed is huge, over 500. One hundred of them have been restored before the exhibition, with an investment of 150.000 Euros.

The Milan exhibit will show over 200 artworks and some of them have never been seen before their creations: their big dimensions made it too difficult to move them or to find an exposition space big enough to allow the public to see them.

ARTISTS AND SOLDIERS This is not the only peculiarity of the Milan section of the project: in our city, the curators concentrated their attention on the artists that were influenced by the Great War. Some of them were soldiers and lived closer than anyone the feelings of the fight. Some of them celebrated the italian win of 1918 and helped to build the sentiment of patriotism and the

myth of the war heroes that went along the rise of Fascism. Some of them highlighted on the power of technology and machines, creating the art movement of the Futurism. Artworks of Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Pietro Canonica, Giulio Aristide Sartorio, Adolfo Wildt will witness the spirit of art in Italy before, after and even during the war, between the glorification of the fights and the social disapproval, as in “Riflessioni di un affamato” (“Reflections of a hungry man”) of Emilio Longoni, where a poor man stares through a window at two people eating in a restaurant, symbol of the social disparity that went along with modernisation. The anniversary of World War I is being celebrated also with a film exhibition, showing the way the new art of cinema showed the first years of the century and their bigger tragedy: over 60 movies and documentaries are being

THE PERMANENT COLLECTION The exposition space hosts not only temporary exhibitions and cultural events: in March the permanent collection has been reorganized and parted in sections. “Cantiere del ‘900.2” is the new one dedicated to the artworks of last century: Piero Manzoni, Yannis Kounellis, Alighie-

TWO PALACES, ONE MUSEUM This one is located in two old palaces: Palazzo Anguissola Antona Traversi comes from the neoclassic age of Milan, the last decades of 18th Century, when Empress Maria Theresa of Austria chose the design of architect Giuseppe Piermarini for Teatro alla Scala and Accademia di Brera. This building has been projected by Carlo Felice Soave and has been particularly cured in any detail. The main facade, in the origin, was in the inner side. In 1800, when the building became a property of the family Antona Traversi, another side of the palace and another magnificent facade was built on via Manzoni. The facade is decorated with the bas-reliefs of personalities linked to the history of Milan, as Leonardo Da Vinci and Alessandro Volta.

THE FORMER HEADQUARTERS OF A BANK The “Gallerie d’Italia” exhibition space incorporates another historic building: the palace built in the first years of 1900 as location for the headquarters of the Banca Commerciale, the bank that in the last years changed its name in Banca Intesa. The project of Luca Beltrami made it coherent to the closer monumental buildings as Palazzo Marino (the siege of the Milan municipality) and La Scala. More recently architect Pietro Portaluppi guided the expansion towards piazza San Fedele.

The location is perfect: Piazza Duomo on one side, Teatro alla Scala on the other side and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele right at the back. “Gallerie d’Italia” is truly in the heart of Milan. The name refers to a bigger project of the cultural branch of Intesa San Paolo, one of the main italian banks. The aim is to create spaces for art and culture in old and precious buildings in the historic areas of the cities. Alongside with Milan, there’s also a “Galleria” in Vicenza and in Naples.

TEATRO ALLA SCALA ROBERTO BOLLE, THE STAR OF BALLET BACK IN MILAN

I

t’s a long way to become a star. Better, an “étoile” to say it in the language of classical ballet. Roberto Bolle is, in a official way, an “étoile”, because the Teatro alla Scala named him so. But he is also one of the icons of ballet all over the world: principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, guest artist of the Royal Ballet of London, ambassador of Italy according to the magazine Vanity Fair. But La Scala, the Milan heart of classical music and ballet, has always been special for him: he started dancing when he was 7 and he was admitted to the Teatro alla Scala ballet academy when he was 11. His debut was not so later after, when Rudolf Nureyev called him for the role of Tadzio in “Death in Venice”. And now? He travels around the world to perform in the most important theatres and collect sold out events. It would probably be the same in the nights when he will be the star of “Giselle”, the show scheduled for eight days in April in the program of La Scala. The “premiére” is on Thursday 2.

The ballet isn’t new for the Milan theatre: in 2012 Roberto Bolle and Svetlana Zakharova starred in a version of “Giselle” particularly linked to the tradition. Fifteen minutes of standing ovation cheered the artists at the end of the “premiére”, that marked also the coming back of Zakharova on stage, only one year after the birth of her daughter Anja. The set up of the ballet will be the same as three years ago: the choreography is the original one, designed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Patrick Fourniller will conduct the Teatro alla Scala orchestra on the music of Adolphe Adam, the french composer that the world know mainly for this ballet. Bolle and Zakharova will be on stage for four of the eight performances. Maria Eichwald, Natalia Osipova and David Hallberg will be the guest artist in the other representations.

Roberto Bolle knows very well the role of Albrecht, the main male character of the ballet. A modern version of swedish choreographer Mats Ek designed the last scene in a very strong way: the dancer had to get back on stage completely naked. In 2010 Roberto Bolle was called to dance in this performance. And the detail of the scene with no clothes caught the attention of many not ballet fans and the theatre of Naples, where the performance took place, was forced to put very strict rules to avoid pictures or videos of the show. Roberto Bolle didn’t care much: he kept focusing on dance, and showing his talent and the results of his hard work started when he was a child. «To achieve excellence, it takes both elements: talent and sacrifice» he said in a old interview. «Dedication makes you achieve great results: there are people who have great passions, maybe not talent, but sacrifice still leads them to live their dreams. But to really excel, yes, it takes talent».

In the schedule of the month of Teatro alla Scala “Giselle” is the main event. But there’s also room for the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Mahler, the austrian talent that started writing masterpieces of music when he was only a young student of 16 at the Conservatory of Vienna. A concert with his “Kindertotenlieder” and with the symphony n° 4 of his friend and colleague Anton Bruckner will be performed by the Filarmonica della Scala orchestra conducted by Christoph von Dohnányi on Monday 13, Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15.

here is just one difference from the Italian tradition: the chefs of the restaurant work from 12 pm to 12 am. Alongside with oysters and raw fishes and shellfishes, there’s always home made pasta and the specialties of the Milan tradition. importance: mozzarella is a must. But there are also some very Milan-style specialties as osso buco and “cotoletta alla milanese” (the veal cutlet dredged with bread crumbs and fried in butter). There’s no need to move away from Brera to find, in via Fiori Chiari 26, the Montmartre Café, open no-stop from 7 am to 2 am. It’s a benchmark for a break in any time of the day, enjoying some focaccia bread, a sandwich, some italian cheese and salami with a glass of nice wine and maybe a dessert.

If your idea of a perfect meal includes a Fiorentina steak grilled on a barbecue, the right place is Il Tavolino (via Fara 23 - tel. +39.02.6703520 or +39.340.7831952), halfway through Stazione Centrale, the railway station, and Palazzo Lombardia, the skyscraper that hosts the headquarters of the Lombardy regional government. Here chef Gaspare Rocca prepares a menu where meat has a key role. It’s cooked on the barbecue, under the eyes of the customers, and with a variety of selected cuts, included the Fiorentina t-bone steak from Chianina beef. The wine menu is extremely cured: bottles are exposed in the dining room in a very charming way, for the happiness of all the wine enthusiastics. Meat is the trademark of the restaurant but there’s always something good to eat for vegetarians and for fish lovers. Piz-

za, focaccia bread and “panuozzi” (the rich sandwiches made in the Naples way using the pizza dough) are on the same high level of quality.

There’s more. At the end of the month, Trattoria Il Cormorano, the last creation of the group, is about to open in the neighborhood Isola, with the same name of the first family restaurant of piazza XXV Aprile. The sixth jewel of the group is Osteria delle Corti (via Giovanni Battista Fauchè 11 - tel. +39.02.33105753): in a wonderful location, in the district of City Life (the former Fiera Campionaria), one of the new neighborhoods that have redesigned the look of Milan, is the right place to discover the old and original tastes of Lombardy way of cooking.

LUGANO, VIA NASSA ART, HISTORY AND LUXURY IN THE HEART OF THE TOWN

ia Nassa is the home of boutiques, jewellers and watchmakers of high level and in its 450 metres of extension, it has a concentration of luxury brands that has no equal in the world.

To the west side, the road marks the natural term of the immense square Bernardino Luini, where there is the beautiful church of Santa Maria degli Angioli, a late roman religious building, whose construction started on February 14, 1499 and was completed the following year.

The partition stands out the grandiose “Passione e Crocifissione” (the most famous Renaissance fresco in Switzerland in 1529) by Bernardino Luini, pupil of Leonardo, who began his career in the Chiaravalle abbey.

The fresco is full of characters, contains a total of 153 heads, a succession of horses, a game of shapes that creates a striking contrast with the melancholy that colors the female figures.

Other art treasures of the church are the painting of the “Ultima Cena” (the last supper) on the left wall of the nave (which originally housed the refectory of the Fathers) and the fresco of the “Madonna con bambin Gesù” and “San Giovannino”, placed on the eastern wall. This is another Luini work.

On the left, towards the entrance of Via Nassa there is the historic Hotel International Au Lac in which it is possibile to breathe the air of Belle Epoque, but with hospitality and high quality services. This unique hotel boasts an history that began in the 20th century, more precisely, in April 7, 1906, when the authorities of that time and all citizens could attend the “Grand opening” that revealed the magnificent five floors building, the comfort of its 80 rooms, the hospitality of its two dining rooms and the timeless charm of the beautiful dome, its most prestigious architectural element.

In 2007, the trade association Hotelleriesuisse, has classified the Hotel International Au Lac as “historic hotel”, a recognition that drove the family Schid, always owners of the hotel, to set up a small museum open to the public that collects objects which tell a story of passion for hospitality and a history of a century full of changes and revolutions, many of which, we don’t remember anymore.

It’s not enough. Parco Sempione hosts also Castello Sforzesco, one of the symbols of the city of Milan, built in the fifteenth century by Francesco Sforza and today a tourist destination of great level, with its splendid halls, courtyards, paths on the spiers and explorations of the underground. And, always within the park, is the Civic Arena Gianni Brera, a sports complex opened in 1807 and still home of track and field events, designed by the neoclassical architect Luigi Canonica.

But in the small version of Central Park in Milan, there is much more.

There is a pavilion of Civic Aquarius in liberty style, restored in 2006.

From the small Sirenette bridge, opened at June 23, 1842 in the presence of the Austria Archduke Ranieri, located in the heart of the park and “guarded” by four cast iron mermaids which clutch in its hands an oar, to the equestrian statue of Napoleon Bonaparte III, which celebrates the triumphant entry of the emperor in Milan in 1859, after the Magenta battle.

In via Elvezia in Sempione Park near to the Arena, “survives” then a particular fountain that in Milan dialect named as “Acqua Marscia” (Rotten Water). Built between 1925 and 1928 this fountain enjoyed the title of “go-

od for health”, thanks to the properties of its sulphurous waters. Scientific documents of the archives of the city show that the water was rich in minerals including manganese and sulfur, but since 2000, with the new health standards, the water was declared “not drinkable”. ENHANCING APPLIED ARTS The location of the building was designed to complete the monumental complex of Parco Sempione, which consists in Castello Sforzesco, the Arco della Pace and the Arena Civica. Triennale is the first institution, established in Europe, with the specific goal of exposing the applied arts, architecture and urbanism. Palazzo dell’Arte, house of Triennale di Milano, was inaugurated in 1933 and designed by Gianni Muzio. The building, erected thanks to the legacy of 5 million of the “cavaliere del lavoro” (an italian honour title) and senator Antonio Bernocchi, was designed to be the seat of the Exhibition of Modern, Decorative and Industrial Arts and Modern Architecture, called Trienniale. Until then, it was held in Monza, every two years. ach Milan district looks different, each area has its own hidden corner and when it appears, it fills of wonder the eyes and the heart. So it is with the Università Cattolica Del Sacro Cuore, that opens its majestic marble doors on Largo Gemelli.

The headquarters of the university, just five minutes away from Sant’Ambrogio underground station, are located very close to the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio. Or better, the university has its headquarters in the ancient Cistercian monastery of Sant’Ambrogio, whose foundation is dated in the year 789. It became the house of teachers and students since 1932, three years after the beginning the great restructuring works after the project of the architect Giovanni Muzio, even if it was completed only 20 years later.

THE TOUCH OF BRAMANTE To characterize the complex, the two beautiful courtyards projected by Donato Bramante in the Renaissance years, have become a symbol of the university. These are the meeting points for the students between classes or the favourite place for studying or chatting, in days when weather is sunny. Punctuated by arches supported by doric and ionic columns, all the courtyards are open to everyone, except the

garden of Saint Catherine, also called “the garden of the virgins”, because it is strictly reserved to women.

But the University has much more to offer. The library is in fact made up of a heritage of 50 thousand volumes and it’s among the largest and oldest in Italy. Many treasures are kept in its rooms: 73 Sumerian tablets from the ancient city of Ur, dating to the third millennium b.C., a thousand of Egyptian papyrus, the genealogical tree of the Visconti family, preserved in a rare incunabula (a printed document with the technology of movable type).

THE LARGEST CATHOLIC COLLEGE On the other hand, the university founded in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli, along with a group of catholic intellectuals such as Ludovico Necchi, Francesco Olgiati, Armida Barelli and Ernesto Lombardo, is the largest catholic college not only in Italy but also in Europe.

PIAZZA CORDUSIO THE COURT OF THE DUKES NOW CONNECTS PEOPLE

iazza Cordusio is many things. It is the connecting element between Piazza Duomo, Piazza dei Mercanti and Via Dante, three of the most characteristic places of the historical centre of Milan. It is a crucial point of the public transport system in Milan, where the historic tram line 1 crosses the lines 12 and 14 and the red underground line.

From here you can admire the Duomo, but you can also see the Castello Sforzesco. From here you can walk through via Dante and reach Parco Sempione, where you can take a picnic and feel like being in London, or go through Via Broletto towards Brera, where you can visit art galleries and feel like being in Paris. From here you can reach the center of the italian economic and financial power, Palazzo Mezzanotte, the seat of the Italian stock exchange.

Cordusio comes from the Latin “Curia ducis”, because it was the court of the Dukes of Lombardy. In fact, Albino, the regent of Milan, lived there when the province was divided into three duchies and Milan was

assigned to him. In more recent times this has been the financial district of Milan, with the historic buildings of the largest banks such as Unicredit, Barclays and Intesa Sanpaolo, in addition to the headquarters of the Post Office.

These buildings have a concave facade, as to symbolically embrace the square. Thanks to their particular profile, the buildings seem to follow the line of the oval square and they fit perfectly into the urban plan which was adopted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century for the city centre.

Nowadays, Cordusio Square is undergoing a deep renewal. The ex post office building was purchased by the american fund Blackstone in the last months of 2014, for about 130 million, which also includes two other properties. Palazzo Broggi, the Stock Exchange location, before being transferred to the so called Piazza Affari, and then headquarters of Unicredit for a long time, is for sale: various international funds, both ameri-

can and asian, have expressed their interest for its purchase for about 300 million euro in recent weeks.

Even if in the coming years, the places of the economical and financial power could be replaced by luxury department stores or whatever, Piazza Cordusio is set to keep its pivotal role for the city center. Today, the visitors of the square can see the flags of the 145 countries that have adhered to Expo 2015 (which will open in Milan on May 1), in a kind of imaginary route that passes by the Duomo and get to Piazza San Babila.

In the opposite direction, towards Piazza Castello, you can see via Dante, one of the main commercial walks in the city, enhanced by a beautiful urban style and a totally pedestrian path. Walking among the elegant buildings erected in the late nineteenth century and peek into the window shops eating an ice cream is definitely a nice way to spend an afternoon or an evening spring.

Dante crosses Via Rovello there is also place for culture, with Piccolo Teatro, and one of the finest public courtyards of Milan, at number 2 in via Rovello.

Here is located the Caffè Letterario, a living space, full of colors, which allow you to feel “at home away from home”, as the first great English travelers stated. Despite being in the city centre, the air is warm and relaxed, except for lunch time during the week. At the cafe, you can browse one of the books scattered on the tables, take it away to read it in peace, then bring it back and let it ready for the next visitors. You can also leave here your books and then find, between their pages, the voices of all those who have left handwritten comments.

A kind of magic to one of the many interesting places along this cross-section of the city center. An axis, between Piazza del Duomo and Largo Cairoli, that is just 700 meters long, but able to act as a meeting point of great charm both for tourists and for the Milan people.

A CONTROVERSIAL SCULPTURE Actually the real name of the sculpture is LOVE (acronym of Libertà, Odio, Vendetta, Eternità, in English Freedom, Hate, Revenge, Eternity), and the work in recent years has become a symbol of the protests against the financial world and offers a lot of possible readings. The sculture represents the open hand as in the fascist salute with all the fingers cut off, as if they had been eroded by time, with the exception of the middle finger. In other words, a gesture of disrespect not only to finance, but also towards fascism. In fact, Palazzo Mezzanotte, opened in 1932 was built with the classic styles of the fascist period. The architect Paolo Mezzanotte began thinking about the construction in 1927, when the stock market was still in the old Palazzo Broggi, a few hundred meters away.

THE BUILDING The building is characterized by the monumental facade, with impressive columns and colossal statues. A total area of 6,450 square meters was enhanced with technological systems: an automatic and simultaneous call of the lifts, an air conditioning system, the bigger electric light board in Italy, which allowed the real-time view of the prices of 78 stocks listed on Milan stock exchange. Today, the atmosphere in the building is definitely quieter. But its charm has remained unchanged, especially after sunset, when the square falls in darkness and silence.

The departure from Piazza Duomo (1) is a must for any tour of the city. One of the reasons, for sure is that the square can be reached easily (MM 1, 3) and then because from the centre of Milan start concentrically all the roads that lead to the suburbs.

With your back to the Duomo you can find, on the right, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (2) that since 1865 is the traditional meeting place of the Milan people. At the centre of the Octagon there is the Mosaico del Toro, a mosaic of a rampant bull. The tradition says that if you spin three times with the heel of your right foot planted at the genitals of the bull, you will have good luck. Continuing along the gallery, you can find Piazza della Scala (3) with the Theatre, Palazzo Marino, seat of the municipality of Milan and the Marchesino restaurant, created by multi-starred chef Gualtiero Marchesi (4).

Taking via Verdi (looking at Scala theatre on the right) you can meet Milano Libri (5), a library where you can breathe the atmosphere of a past time. In Brera meet gallery carpets Moshe Tabibnia (6) continuing we reach via Brera with Pinacoteca di Brera (7) built in 1773 by Piermarini, one of the protagonists of Neoclassicism in Italy. And

then, on the same road, the Crespi Brera (8), one of the oldest shops of drawing and painting. Crossing via Pontaccio you meet the wine shop N’Ombra de vin (9). A stop here is certainly a must. You can return in via Fiori Chiari where there is RobertaeBasta (10), an antique and modern art shop. Finally, you arrive from via Mercato to reach Castello Sforzesco (12) where the Expo Gate (11) stands in the entrance to Via Dante: it is a meeting, discussion and sharing place, open to all Milan citizens and visitors; and, symbolically, a gateway to the world, the atmosphere, the content of the Universal Exhibition of next May.
