«WELCOME TO THE PLACE TO BE: ENJOY EXPO 2015 AND THE CITY» Welcome to Milan. Our city, as stated by the New York Times, is the first place in the world that’s worth a visit in these months. It’s the place to be because there will be Expo 2015, the major global event that will guarantee a great economic development and also an opportunity to boost the international image of an innovative city, leader in the field of culture. For the first time in the history of Expo, the fair will not be only an exhibition, but it will also involve its “home”. To involve Milan and its territory, we designed “Expo City”: the next months will be characterized by 20 thousand cultural, scientific and sports events. Great exhibitions, new museums, the Teatro alla Scala – the world temple of opera – with a full schedule six days a week, thanks to a special program, international scientific meetings to discuss the theme of Expo “Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life “. The many millions of visitors and tourists, like you, will certainly not miss the largest exhibition in Italy dedicated to Leonardo Da Vinci. You can’t even lose the Pietà Rondanini, Michelangelo’s masterpiece, moved into a beautiful new exhibition at the Castello Sforzesco. And then, there are the classic beauties of Milan: Duomo, Galleria restored to its former glory and the Cenacolo . The future merges with the past in a melting pot that combines the new skyscrapers of Piazza Gae Aulenti and Porta Nuova with the houses and buildings of the “old Milan” in the Isola neighborhood. In addition, many countries and foreign cities have scheduled events in the city, besides being present on the exhibition site: from France to Germany, from China to the United States and many others. ARE YOU READY FOR EXPO? Dear Guest, here we are, finally, ready for the more intense, busy and spectacular six months of the last years for Milan. Friday 1 is the day of the grand opening of Expo 2015, the international exposition that will bring all the world in our city. It’s not a too big hyperbole: 145 countries are among the official participants and 20 million visitors are expected to cross the doors of the newly built exhibition centre in the north-western side of Milan but easy to reach even from the city centre. If you are here, reading our magazine (Milan Concierge Information is the official and unique instrument used by Concierges), you probably already know it all. But you probably still need a little help to get oriented in the features of Expo 2015 and of the whole city, because many things will happen everywhere in Milan. In the next pages you will find a short recap of the basic informations about the international exposition: the venue, the features and the show, how to get there and how to buy tickets (don’t forget that the Concierges “Les Clefs d’Or“of your hotel are official resellers), what to do beside Expo in and out the exhibition centre. big village, but also a small place with all the world in: Expo 2015 is expected to be the “big thing” in Milan for the whole year. In the six months of opening, from Friday 1 to October 31, almost 20 million people are about to reach the city to visit the exposition, where 145 countries and 3 international organizations as official participants, 13 non governmental organizations and 5 corporate pavilions will join together to speak out about an essential theme for the present and the future of Earth: “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. Every participant is asked to follow three basic guidelines: the right to food that is healthy, safe and sufficient, the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the food chain, the preservation of taste and of food culture. It’s not by chance that Italy has been chosen to host this particular edition of the international exposition: since 1865, the year of the first edition in London, every Expo has been the showcase of progress, technology and the changes that new times bring with them. Talking of food and more than all healthy food, Italy has probably something to teach to the whole world about richness of nature and produces and variety of ways to eat them. All this will be displayed in a newly built area od 1,1 millions of square metres, in the territories of Rho and Pero,

two suburbs of the north-western side of Milan. Architects Stefano Boeri, Ricky Burdett and Jacques Herzog are among the contributors of the big project, a village built as a old Roman city, with two perpendicular main roads drawing a cross on the island-shaped area, that looks like an island also because it is entirely surrounded by water. Main exhibition pavilions are around the two streets, called “cardo” and “decumano” as in ancient latin. ALONG THE “ROMAN” STREETS Along “decumano”, visitors will find the international exhibitors, while “cardo” host the italian buildings. “Palazzo Italia” is the main one, with its peculiar architecture: it will be also the place for international meetings. Every participant nation has built a pavilion of its own, describing in the best way their message about food and health. For this reason a walk around Expo will be like a world tour in small scale. Nine special clusters are dedicated to particular themes: rice, cocoa and chocolate, coffee, fruits and legumes, spices, cereals and tubers, bio-mediterraneum, islands and sea and arid zones. In each one, there will be exhibition spaces reserved to the countries more involved in those the-

mes: from Cape Verde and Caribbean community when it’s about islands, to Eritrea, Mali or Palestine when we talk of deserts. A LAKE, AN ARENA, A THEATER Other characteristic places into the exhibition area are the Lake Arena, suitable for fireworks waterworks and concerts and big enough for 20.000 people, the Open Air Theater, where visitors can attend the exhibitions of Cirque du Soleil, that set up the show “Vivaitalia” exclusively for Expo 2015, and the Mediterranean Hill, a rebuilt small ecosystem typical of Italy where there is the best view on the whole area, and also the stands of Slow Food, the italian organization that promotes traditional products. Cascina Triulza is one of the pre-existent buildings in the area: it will host the Civil Society pavilion. It’s calculated that 250.000 people can attend the Expo site at the same time. The ticket sales are running faster than expected, but there are still many available places for your visit. There is also an app for smartphones, available on iTunes and Google Play, to get also a pocket guide of what’s on around Expo, during the days of international exposition. It’s free and it’s available also in english.

THE AMBASSADORS THE ALL STAR TEAM OF CHEFS SPREADS THE EXPO MESSAGE

robably Expo 2015 doesn’t need more boost to be known worldwide. But a huge team of ambassadors has taken the commitment to spread the knowledge and the mission of the bigges event of the year in Italy or probably in the world. Almost eighty personalities from all the world are among the ambassadors list: many of them are born in Italy, but there are also foreign opinion leaders ready to convey the principles related to the theme of the Universal Exposition. They come from the world of music, like Andrea Bocelli and Giorgio Moroder, of literature like Taiye Selasi, of economy like Jeremy Rifkin and Amartya Sen, of sports like Gianluigi Buffon, Danilo Gallinari and Austrian ski champion of the 70ies Franz Klammer. Since Expo 2015 will be a major global event dedicated to nutrition, a pivotal role in the project is played by the chefs. Since November, the organizing staff of the exposition has involved a team of masters of cooking. Also in this case, some of them are italian and, more than all, are Milan-based. It means that a visit to Expo might also offers the chance to taste the specialities comimg out of their kitchens. It’s the case of Carlo Cracco and Davide Oldani. The first is also a tv star in Italy: judge of the italian edition of Masterchef, the talent show for “wannabe” chefs, he guides the Milan restaurant that has his name (Cracco, in via Victor Hugo 4, two stars on the Michelin gui-

de) and a bistrot called “Carlo e Camilla in segheria” (via Guido Meda 24), built in a former sawmill. Davide Oldani owns and runs the restaurant D’O in Cornaredo, in the outskirts of Milan. It’s an awarded restaurant too, with one star according to the Michelin guide. Cesare Battisti, with the restaurant Ratanà (via Gaetano de Castillia 28) and Andrea Berton (restaurant Berton, in viale della Liberazione 13) work also in Milan. Pietro Leeman, born in Switzerland, has chosen the capital city of Lombardy for the restaurant Joia, with a all-vegetarian menu. Gualtiero Marchesi, a star among italian chefs, has a long career and a tradition in restyling the italian specialities. Ernst Knam, born in Germany, runs a chocolate shop renowned not only in Milan but in the whole Italy thanks to his many tv appearances. Devero, in Cavenago di Brianza, not so far from Milan, is the restaurant of Enrico Bartolini. The line-up of italian ambassadors is completed by Ugo Alciati (Costigliole, in Piedmont), Moreno Cedroni (Marche, on the Adriatic Sea) and Cristina Bowerman, born in Puglia, with

working experiences also in San Francisco, Usa, and now at work in Rome. Two chefs come from abroad: Alfons Schuhbeck, from Germany, has been the chef or Bayern Munich football team and has cooked for Angela Merkel, George W. Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Joe Bastianich is american but has italian roots: also an international tv star (he’s a judge in the Us and in the Italian edition of Masterchef) runs restaurants in New York and has a winery in the North-East side of Italy, where his family come from. Every chef brought to Expo 2015 an ingredient, explaining the reason for the choice. Ernst Knam, with no surprise, has chosen cocoa «also because it is very healthy». Carlo Cracco opted for the egg, «because it symbolizes: life, birth, wealth». Davide Oldani picked on saffron «because it reminds me of my childhood, when we used to have yellow risotto, riso alla milanese». Gualtiero Marchesi went with wheat and pasta: «It is probably our most important treasure and spaghetti are the highest symbol of it».

USEFUL INFORMATIONS HOW TO GET A TICKET AND REACH THE EXPOSITION TICKETS The suggestion is to buy your tickets in advance: you will save the time of the (probably) very long queue at the ticket point of Expo 2015. You can do it on the internet (check the website www.expo2015.org) with your credit card or, if you are already in Milan, at the Expo Gate close to Castello Sforzesco, where you will find also useful informations about the exposition and the events. The concierges of your hotel are also official resellers. There are many kinds of tickets. A open ticket is valid for one day at your choice for all the duration of the exposition. You’d better book your day in advance in any case, once you have decided when to come to Milan. A fixed day ticket allows you to enter only in that day. There is also the two or three day pass, if you think you will need more than one visit to enjoy Expo at the full, and the six months unlimited pass that guarantees you to get in anytime you want during the opening of the exhibition. Evening tickets guarantee access from 7 pm to the closing time. Family packages offer discounts for children. Reduced tickets are on sale for kids from 4 to 14 years and for seniors over 65 years. Children of 0-3 years enter for free. You can buy tickets in advance also for the Cirque du Soleil show “Allavita”, especially set up for Expo 2015. HOW TO REACH THE AREA Public transport might be a good idea to reach the Expo 2015 doorways: in less than 30 minutes by suburban train or underground, visitors can

get to the exhibition area from the city centre. The underground stop is Rho Fiera, on the red MM1 line. You don’t need to change if you start from Duomo, Cadorna or Porta Venezia: don’t forget to check the direction of the train, choosing the ones directed to Rho Fiera and not the ones heading to Bisceglie. Rho Fiera is also a stop of four suburban train lines: the S5 (Varese-Treviglio), S6 (Novara-Treviglio), S11 (Chiasso-Rho) and S14 (Rho-Milano Rogoredo). Three of those lines stop also in Repubblica, Garibaldi and Porta Venezia stations. Be careful to the ticket: you have to pay an extra fee because it is out of the urban circle. A roundtrip costs 5 euros and a daily ticket 8 euros. It fits on both underground and suburban trains. Also many regional trains stop in Rho Fiera, on the line towards Tu-

rin, Arona, Domodossola and Varese. Throughout the six-month duration of Expo Milano 2015, a total of 67 national and international train services will make a special stop at the Rho Fiera Expo Milano 2015 station. These include nineteen Frecciarossa (high-speed trains) services, eighteen Frecciabianca (fast trains), four Intercity notte (night-trains) as well as twenty-six services from and to Switzerland and France. What about cars? Four big car parks are dislocated close to the four access points of Expo 2015: Merlata (southbound, you will reach exposition area by the pedestrian bridge that links also the railway and the underground station), Arese, Fiera Milano and Trenno, all linked to the East, West and North access by a shuttle bus. You will need to pay extra-ticket for parking.

OPENING HOURS Expo 2015 is open every day from May 1 to October 31, from 10 am to 11 pm. The participants’ pavilions will close at 9 pm. But restaurants are open until 10,30 pm. EXTRA FEATURES Of course you can eat and drink at Expo 2015: it would be a nonsense to have a big event about food and not to have high quality catering in it. Refreshment areas are at regular intervals, along the “Decumano” one of the two main streets of the exhibition space and are made of recyclable materials, mainly woods. Green areas are all around the venue and guarantee spaces of pure relax in the middle of the nature. A children zone is ready to take care of the kids letting them enjoy Expo at the full with activities especially designed for them.

TRIENNALE HOSTS THE ONLY EXPO 2015 PAVILION IN THE CITY It’s an art exhibition, but it’s also considered as a part of Expo 2015: “Arts and food”, hosted in the rooms of Triennale, in viale Alemagna, in the heart of the city, is the only “piece” of the global exposition not in the big area of Rho Fiera. On display there are artworks of any kind: paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, telling the story of the relationship of men with food from 1851, the year of the first international exposition, to now. A old factory in the Porta Genova neighborhood is rady to become a big exposition place to show the best of italian craftsmanship: Italian Makers Village will host from Friday 1 and until the end of Expo 2015 800 companies and 1000 events. There will be also 6 street food restaurants, certified by the Slow Food experts.

The botanic garden of Milan is a hidden treasure of the city: in the Brera neighborhood, it is a peaceful corner with many treasures for the nature lovers. On Friday 1 (the opening day of Expo 2015) and on Sunday 17 the garden will be open for free to visitors: the guides will bring tourists also in the close astronomic museum.

Via Lattea is a project of Fai, the italian foundation for the safeguard of monuments and nature, that aims to bring the good of nature in the heart of Milan with special events. The first one, on Sunday 3, is a walk that starts in piazza Duomo, includes guided visits to monuments, and ends with a food market in parco Sempione.

Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the most famous contemporary italian artists, will show his point of view about food with an installation in piazza Duomo. A big green apple, biten and re-generated (the title of the artwork is “la mela rigenerata”) will be surrounded by straw bales.

The 25° Festival of Asia, Africa and Latin America cinema of Milan will dedicate a special section to movies that talk about food. Sustainability, agriculture between land and business, right to food are the main themes of the movies, that accompany the theme of Expo 2015 from a different perspective.

“Dance explosion” is a festival dedicated to dance and ballet at Teatro Martinitt, in the Lambrate neighborhood of Milan. The program includes original choreographies on modern music (from italian pop to blues and jazz) and more classical style, as in Carmina Burana. There will be shows every night until Monday 25.

The World Fair Trade Week stops in Milan, trying to get the hype of the Expo 2015 days. From Thursday 28 the Fabbrica del Vapore exhibition centre will host the international exposition of art, food and crafts from all the world, sold at the “right price” with no exploitation of the workers, promoting also excellence and quality.

FONDAZIONE PRADA A NEW HOUSE FOR CULTURE IN A FORMER DISTILLERY

em Koolhaas projected the exhibition spaces, Robert Gober and Thomas Demand have been called to set up site-specific installations, Roman Polanski will analyze his inspiration in front of conteporary art in order to make a new documentary and a series of film screenings: only big names are involved in the opening of the new venue of Fondazione Prada in Milan. A former distillery in the southern side of the city has been transformed in a cultural centre with doors open to art, architecture, cinema and philosophy, as in the mission of the foundation, created in 1993 and led by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, names that the world of fashion already know because they also manage the brand Prada, still a family-company that sets the trends in the field of luxury goods. rical Ca’ Corner della Regina, on the Grand Canal, in one of the cultural beating hearts of the city. And one exhibitions will mark the opening of the new venue of largo Isarco, scheduled for Saturday 9: “Serial Classic”, from an idea of Salvatore Settis, focuses on classical sculpture and explores the ambivalent relationship between originality and imitation in Roman culture and its insistence on the circulation of multiples as an homage to Greek art. People still associate the idea of classical to that of uniqueness, but in no other period of western art history the creation of copies from great masterpieces of the past has been as important as in late Republican Rome and throughout

the Imperial age. More than 70 artworks will be on display, analyzing the original masterpieces and their multiple copies, as in the case of the Discobolus or the Crouching Venus. In the same days another exhibition, called “Portable Classic” will open in the Venice venue and will be dedicated to the miniature reproductions of classical sculptures. The display system of both exhibitions has been designed by Oma, the architecture studio of Rem Koolhaas. And the highlight on design has been a leitmotiv in the building of the new exhibition space: Wes Anderson, the movie director, recreated the typical mood of old Milan cafés in the venue bar and a group of students from the

École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Versailles projected the kids area. «Thanks to the opening of this new permanent venue» says a statement of the foundation, «the Fondazione aims to contribute more incisively to contemporary culture, sustaining the idea that art is an effective knowledge tool».

LEONARDO DA VINCI THE LARGEST EXHIBIT EVER FOR THE ITALIAN GENIUS

eonardo da Vinci is famous as born in Tuscany. But probably he should be considered a citizen of the world, in the Renaissance years when the known world was smaller than today. Everybody knows his art and his inventions and projects. He lived and worked in France. Italy is still proud of his genius. And Milan has been for a long time his city, when he was called to the court of the Dukes Sforza, as an architect, an engineer, an artist and a scientist. So it’s not so strange if the biggest exhibition ever set up in Italy to celebrate his genius is hosted in Milan. Open since April 15 in Palazzo Reale, very close to piazza Duomo, it’s entitled “Leonardo”, because in this case a name is more than enough to know who we are talking about. FROM THE MAIN WORLD MUSEUMS There would be a piece of every field of the knowledge of Leonardo da Vinci in the exhibition promoted by the Milan City Council in partnership with Palazzo Reale and Skira. The curators Pietro C. Marani and Maria Teresa Florio are two of the leading art historians engaged in studies on the great Renaissance genius. And the collection of paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculptures and incunabula shown to the public comes from the collections of some of the main museums of the world. Visitors will see one hundred of autograph drawings, paintings that include Saint Jerome in the Wilderness (Vatican Museums), the Dreyfus Madonna (Washington, National Gallery of Art), the Head of a Woman also known as La Scapiliata (Parma, Galleria Nazionale) and Portrait of a Musician (Milan, Pinacoteca Ambrosiana). Particular importance attaches to the loan of three paintings from the Louvre: La Belle Ferronière, The Annunciation and John the Baptist. “The Last Supper” is not so far away from Palazzo Reale, the noble building that faces the Duo-

mo cathedral. But visitors of the exhibition will be able to see every detail of the fresco thanks to an interactive panel. Three historical models of machines (the self-propelled vehicle, gold-beating hammer and mechanical loom) constructed on the basis of the master’s drawings are on loan from the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnica of Milan. TWELVE SECTIONS The exhibit is divided in twelve sections, highlighting the key threads running

through the master’s long artistic and scientific career, embracing not only the early years in Florence but also the two stays in Milan and his period in France. The exhibition will also clearly show his interdisciplinary vocation and continuous interweaving of interests. His influence will be analyzed comparing his masterpieces with the artworks of masters of Renaissance. The exhibition will be open seven days a week and on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday visitors will have access until midnight.

PALAZZO REALE THE ART CENTRE IN THE HOUSE OF KINGS

THE AUSTRIAN TOUCH In 18th century Milan was the capital of a province of the Austro-Hungaric kingdom. The palace increased its prestige thanks to the baroque ornaments and, in the last years of the century, the architect Giuseppe Piermarini projected a makeover to the neoclassic style. Since then, the kings and the queens like Marie Therese, Ferdinand I and the Savoia family (and also emperors like Napoleon) chose to live in the palace. Famous artists and painters were called to enrich the rooms with paintings, statues, ornaments and fine furniture. THE BOMBS AND THE REBIRTH In 20th century Palazzo Reale became property of the italian state and was immediately opened to the public. But in 1943, during the huge bombings on Milan of World War II, the building was seriously damaged. The works of rebuilding and restoring lasted for decades. After fifty years Palazzo Reale has been reopened: now it hosts temporary expositions and a permanent exposition called Museo della Reggia, still not completed, that shows the various ages of the palace and, more than all, the ornaments and the masterpieces that made of this building a place worthy for kings and queens.

Palazzo Reale means royal palace. But who were the kings and queens that used to live in this fascinating building, right in the heart of the big city? First, in the Middle Age, it was the siege of the government. When the families Visconti and Sforza took place as lords of Milan, Palazzo Reale became the heart not only of the political but also of the cultural life of the city, with elegant events and sumptuous receptions.

ARIANA GRANDE THE TEEN STAR IS GOING BIG ONLY ONE DATE IN ITALY

ooner or later, teen stars are bound to reach worldwide popularity: it’s a trend and it can’t be stopped. But some of them capture fame also with trasgression, as Miley Cyrus or, before her, Britney Spears did. Ariana Grande belongs to another group: she remains focused on music and art, with no explicit messages from the stage exhibitions or the covers of magazines. The “good girl” behaviour (she is only 22) didn’t stop her success: she has already made two tv series broadcast all over the world, she has recorded two albums and she is in the middle of her second tour. And for the first time she will perform in the land of her ancestors: Ariana Grande Butera (here’s her full name) has Sicilian and Abruzzese roots and declared herself on Twitter as “italian-american”. The european tour will start on Friday 15 in Paris. The only italian date is scheduled on Monday 25 in Milan, in the Mediolanum Forum.

BROADWAY, TV AND MUSIC The tour is called My Everything, after the title of her second album, that came out in 2014. It’s not a problem for Ariana Grande to sing in front of big audiences: her “debut” was in front of the hockey fans of Florida Panthers, when she sang the Usa national anthem. She was only 9. She studied theatre and music and when she was 15 she made her Broadway debut with a supporting role in the musical “13”. Then the days of television came: Nickelodeon hired her for the role of Sam Valentine in the tv serie “Victorious” where she was a student of a performing arts school. Not so far from reality for Ariana Grande, that never stopped studying and beside tv success (the spin-off of “Victorious” called “Sam & Cat” saw her playing in a leading role) started exploring the paths of pop music. Mariah Carey is her model: «She is literally my favorite human being on the planet. And of course Whitney Houston as well». Sometimes the show includes some featurings: she hosted two times another young world star as Justin Bieber during her tour. And gossip specialists started the rumors about a flirt.

allery Moshe Tabibnia is presenting an outstanding exhibition aimed at showing, for the first time to an International audience in Milan, some of the rarest and oldest tapestries and embroideries made from the most prominent textile centres in Germany, France, Belgium, and Italy between 15th and the 18th centuries. “Woven tales: tapestries and embroideries from the Gothic period to the Renaissance” will be inaugurated on Wednesday 6 and will stay open until July 11. Inspired by such a journey through more than three centuries of the history of textile art is the newly executed publication of “Textile Art Masterpieces: Tapestries and Embroideries in the Zaleski Collection”, edited by Moshe Tabibnia and Elisabetta Mero, with essays by Nello Forti Grazzini, Chiara Buss, and Gian Luca Bovenzi. art of Milan, within walking distance from the Pinacoteca di Brera and Palazzo Reale, where two displays, “Il Principe dei sogni–Giuseppe negli arazzi medicei di Pontormo e Bronzino” and “Arte Lombarda dai Visconti agli Sforza”, will be on show during the timeframe of “Woven Tales”. The exhibition at Gallery Moshe Tabibnia is structured thematically, chronologically and geographically, and unfolds into six sections. The first five sections will offer insights into the thematic areas explored within the volume dedicated to the Zaleski Collection. The last section, inspired by the theme of the Expo 2015, features

textile artefacts which, by way of their subjects and/or original functions, stir some reflection about nourishment in history, and the use of food metaphors for the experience of the divine in different cultural areas. More in detail, section 1 will show Gothic tapestries from Switzerland and Germany, some of the oldest and rarest European pieces of work that have survived. These tapestries were woven after cartoons drawn by professional painters. Section 2 will guide the visitors into the world of Flemish and Franco-Flemish tapestries, where until the age of the Renaissance tapestry making reached its apex, in terms of artistic achievement and socio-economic impact. Section 3 will concentrate on tapestries whose original decorative function was accomplished through the display of compositions with a treasure trove of vegetal species as in the refectory of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, where tapestries with floral motifs decorate the foreshortened walls of the fictive environment housing the Last Supper painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Section 4 is dedicated to narrative and allegorical tapestries of the 16th and 17th centuries, originary from Flanders, Germany and Italy. Section 5 is about sacred and profane european embroideries, one of the most elaborate and little known artistic techniques, using silk, wool and silk-andmetal threads.

The Italian style is in the details: the indicators of the counter “30 minutes” have the iconic colors of the Italian flag, green, white and red. And there are other peculiarities: the case back shows the engraving “Swiss Made Limited Edition”, and the material of the strap, rubber, is a singularity. In the past, only one chronograph Royal Oak has been made with this material. This was the City of Sails, created in 2002. A MUST SINCE 1972 The chronograph is inextricably linked to the history of the sport watches and occupies a privileged place within the Royal Oak collection. The independent spirit of the Maison emerged in 1972, the year of the launch of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, that changed the codes of Haute Horlogerie for good. The timepiece, with an octagonal bezel and

steel screws, raised the steel to precious metal and revolutioned the approach to luxury watches. A real culture shock, that expressed the serenity of the Maison, its strength and its extraordinary creative liberty. Today, Audemars Piguet ealks on the same path following some priorities: to preserve art forms almost extinct, to promote its practice and transmission to future generations, to continue a tradition founded on independence and exceptional standards and, finally, to look at the future in full compliance with global issues. All timepieces wonderfully reflect these principles, becoming the expression of many months of work and innate savoir-faire of Audemars Piguet, a reality where time is experienced and conceived as nowhere else. The case of Royal Oak Chronograph is 41mm in steel: the size is very contemporary, and retains all the features that have made the Royal Oak a legendary watch. As the model of 1972, this limited edition reveals the alternation of polished and satin, and the

eight hexagonal screws of the octagonal bezel in white gold. Water resistant to 50 meters and equipped with screw crown, the case has a sapphire non-glare crystal. TWO MORE WATCHES IN 2015 The dial is decorated with the motif “Grande Tapisserie”, typical of the Royal Oak collection. Audemars Piguet produces this decoration with ancient machines according to the technique of guilloche. This rare process that Audemars Piguet is proud to know and use, allows to realize simultaneously two processes: cutting the square and the mesh structure of the thin scars that fit in. The overlap of the two decorations, characteristic of the Royal Oak, gives to the dials a unique brilliance. The watch is available in a limited edition of 500 pieces and will have, in the package, also an hand-made alligator blue strap in large scales. The package, specifically realized, shows a metal plate that reproduces the back of the watch with the colors of the Italian flag. But in this year, the news does not stop at the Royal Oak Chronograph, the production of Audemas Piguet, also proposes the Tourbillon Chro-

nograph Royal Oak Offshore 2015, equipped with the new self-winding movement calibre 2897. In addition to its accuracy, the model has a tourbillon mechanism and a column wheel that well interprets the ingenuity and the know-how typical of Le Brassus. Equally accurate to the classic style of the Manufacture, despite contemporary details, the Royal Oak is the new two-tone timepiece characterized by the combination of two contrasting materials such as steel and rose gold. This modern combination results in a luxurious and elegant watch, able to evoke the charm of the original steel model of 1972. Among the news of 2015, finally, stands the Millenary Quadriennium, the new timepiece with calendar “four”, a function that allows you to correct the time once in leap years. The original elliptical case is made of rose gold, while the dial combines traditional motifs and technical details for an effect that fully expresses the creativity and the extraordinary passion for the watchmaking art of Audemars Piguet.

or gardens, plants and flowers lovers, the event to mark on the calendar is from Friday 8 to Sunday 10. In those days the gardens of Porta Venezia, dedicated to the great Italian journalist Indro Montanelli, passed away in 2001, host the twentieth edition of Orticola, a gardening show that rounds up dozens of exhibitors and thousands of fans turning the Milan public gardens in a corner of paradise.

But not only in these days the Porta Venezia gardens, originally set up between 1782 and 1786 by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini, expanded in 1862 with the intervention of the architect Giuseppe Balzaretto and come to to the present form in 1881, after the intervention of the architect Emilio Alemagna, represent a stop not to be missed in the centre of the city. A QUIET SHELTER Frequented by mothers with children, sports joggers, dog owners who walk their pets and people looking for some shelter from the chaotic rhythm of the city, the gardens are a protected oasis in which everyone can get into greenery and nature. Opened in May from 6.30 am to 10 pm, they offer not only lawns on which playing or sitting in the sun, flowerbeds to enjoy in the best way the spring, fountains around which to relax, but also a pond with ducks and fish. HISTORIC BUILDINGS We can walk from the historic Padiglione del CaffĂ¨ built on Monte Merlo, on the Bastioni side, and transformed into kindergarten after renovation in 1920, to Palazzo Dugnani, a beautiful patrician residence on Via Manin side built in the late seventeenth century for the Meda family. The structure, historically hangout of artistic and social life, owned by the city of Milan, is currently undergoing a restoration. In the gardens of Porta Venezia,there is also the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale (open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5,30 pm), in which there is a section dedicated to dinosaurs, with a triceratops and a diorama that reproduce a paleontological

THE DOME SCREEN Opened in 1930, the Milan planetarium is still the largest in Italy. Its projection system, which reproduces on a â&#x20AC;&#x153;dome screenâ&#x20AC;? of 600 square metres the appearance of the starry sky and astronomical phenomena observable in the past, ensures great realism and suggestion. Its appeal is so big that only in the last year more than 130 thousand visitors stopped to take a look to this extraordinary structure.

A WITNESS OF NEOCLASSICISM Commissioned by Barbiano to renowned architect Piermarini, it was entrusted by him to the student Pollack, who designed this building following the Neoclassicism. In 1802 the villa was bought by the Cisalpine Republic, and became the institutional residence of Gioacchino Murat and Carolina Bonaparte. Later, the Villa was entered as an heritage of the Crown and became Villa Reale, hosting Eugene of Beauharnais. With the Restoration, the Austrians took the property, which became the home of Marshal Radetzky, who died here in 1858. O

ALSO CONTEMPORARY ART Today it is one of the main modern art galleries in Europe. Inside, there is an important collection of works of art of the nineteenth century. In 1955, on the ruins of the stables bombed during the Second World War, the architect Ignazio Gardella has created the Pavilion of Contemporary Art (PAC), which has hosted a lot of exhibitions including the one of Marina Abramovic, entitled The Abramovic Method, directly from Moma in New York. On 27 July 1993 a car bomb exploded in via Palestro, causing the collapse of an external wall of the Pavilion of Contemporary Art. A few steps from the gardens of Porta Venezia, on the opposite side of Via Palestro, there is Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte, known as Villa Reale, which since 1921 is the seat of the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan (Gam). mong the many redevelopments and recoveries that have been made in the city before Expo 2015, the recovery of Darsena is surely destined to have the greatest impact on Milan. With the restyling of the ancient fluvial port of Milan and the reopening of the adjacent spaces, this work has returned to the city one of its historical symbols. The cost of the entire project has been of about 19 million euros and it has been completed just in time for Expo. The operation allowed the recovery of an area that, for years, had been abbandoned. And, along with the redevelopment of Piazza XXIV Maggio, now almost entirely pedestrian, the redesign of the area has created a zone destined to become the new benchmark for the nightlife in Milan. PORTA CICCA, THE SPANISH NAME In the past, Porta Ticinese was called Porta Cicca. The name has to be reported to the days of Spanish rule: this door, being the smallest of the Milan doors, had been baptized “Chica”, literally “little girl”. In Roman times, it was called “Via Carraria”, or “Porta Marzia”, for the presence of a temple dedicated to the god Mars. During French rule, it was called “Porta Marengo”, to celebrate Napoleon’s victory at Marengo on June 14 1800. Corso San Gottardo, the road that links Porta Ticinese to the southern outskirts of Milan, was once called “Borg formaggiatt” (in Milan slang means cheesemakers neighborhood), for the presence of many dairies in that area. Over the last year the area around Porta Ticinese was restructured by the redevelopment work of Piazza XXIV Maggio and the Darsena. During this work, the new changes derived from the project of the architect Cagnola.

In the southern side of the city, the Ticinese arch stands at the centre of Piazza XXIV Maggio. It was built between 1802 and 1814 to celebrate the victory of Napoleon Bonaparte at Marengo. Designed by architect Luigi Cagnola, the arch is one of the six most important historical doorways of Milan and it is considered one of the finest examples of Milan neoclassicism. Porta Ticinese was built on the same road axis, southbound, in the direction of the town Pavia. In this direction the omonymous doors from Roman times had prevoiusly arisen, on the track of the Roman walls, and then the Middle Age ones. The latter, the Medieval Porta Ticinese, was part of the walls of the XII century built after the Frederick I Barbarossa raid and it is still visible. It is situated among the omonymous course and the square outside the Basilica with San Lorenzo columns.

THE RECOMMENDED

ITINERARY The start of our itinerary is the underground station in via Montenapoleone (line 3, the yellow one), one of the streets of the so called “quadrilateral of fashion”. According to the index “Main streets across the world”, via Montenapoleone is the sixth more expensive and prestigious street of the world. Turning right in via Manzoni, at the nomber 31 we see Palazzo Armani (1), a hotel with many services for the customers. Along the same street, but on the other side, we meet the Grand Hotel de Milan (2), one of the most famous in the city. Among the famous guests of the past and of the present days, there has been also the musician Giuseppe Verdi. From via Manzoni we reach via Borgonuovo (3) and via Fiori Oscuri (4), full of shops and ateliers. In via Brera we find the Pinacoteca di Brera (5), the museum that keeps the splendour and talent of italian art of painting. A visit is a must, to see masterpieces as the famous “Kiss” of Hayez. In via Fiori Oscuri we bump into the Montmartre Café (6) and two restaurants: Cestino (7) and La Taverna del Borgo Antico (8) where you will find the best italian food. Along the street we cross Corso Garibaldi (9) and its shops. It’s worth a stop the bar Radetsky (10), popular among the “over 30” and where you might meet the football players of Inter Milan and Ac Milan. At the number 108, here’s another restaurant that deserves some attention: Alexander (11). And here we are in Città Nuova (14), where Eataly (12) represents the top of food made in Italy: here you can buy and eat the best specialties. Along Corso Como (13), we find more bars and shops. For example at “10 Corso Como”, a former garage refurbished in the 90ies by Carla Sozzani, there will be lots of surprises. A beautiful staircase guides us to Città Nuova and piazza Gae Aulenti, a new urban and residential model offered to the citizens of Milan. From the square, we can reach the new railway station of Porta Garibaldi (15) and, if we want to get back to the starting point, we can use the underground. The stairs are just in front of the railway station.
