“Urban playground for Madrid”
Garden, school and facilities for sports + culture
Thesis project - ETSAM UPM
2023-2024
The project is situated on the boundary between two urban areas: the traditional neighborhood of Lavapiés and Ronda de Toledo, the main avenue marking the beginning of the new Arganzuela neighborhood.
At this juncture, a series of programs are developed to serve the Lavapiés neighborhood. These programs include a large renaturalized garden area, a school, and cultural and sports facilities. They are arranged in a manner that engages with both urban contexts.
A critical aspect of the proposal is the detailed and technically attentive development of a specific element chosen for its significant historical value: the restoration and expansion of the former tobacco factory, a piece of Madrid’s industrial heritage.
To expand and renovate the factory, characterized by its heavy brick walls and symmetrical layout, a large lightweight structure is proposed to be placed asymmetrically over the existing building. This approach will enhance the building’s thermodynamic performance and create open spaces that are currently lacking (the original structure, due to its load-bearing walls, features mainly small to medium-sized spaces). In order to preserve its heritage, the new expansion hovers above the Tabacalera, almost without physically touching it.

Intervention in Madrid’s Royal Botanical Garden
Undergrad P7 - ETSAM UPM (awarded with Honors) 2021-2022
https://archive.dpa-etsam.com/projects/otrx-jardin
The project “Another Garden” proposes interventions within the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid (RJB) to coexist with and transform specific areas such as greenhouses, technical spaces, and parterres (flower beds). It consists of two main intervention groups:
1. INFRASTRUCTURE: This involves large-scale interventions connecting the RJB’s technical zones, including water management ponds, biomass areas, and greenhouses. Key elements are strategically placed within these spaces to serve as forums for discussing botany-related matters.
2. PROSTHESES: These are smaller-scale interventions integrated within the botanical garden’s flower beds, which are organized into zones such as ornamental, productive, or medicinal. The strategy within this area of the garden focuses on connecting and reconfiguring these zones to foster new dialogues and relationships between them.
The reinterpretation of nature through technology drives this transformative process, leading to a deeper understanding of the garden’s context and the identities it embodies.

“HIDDEN GARDEN” 03
Small pavillion for Victor Horta’s Bozar building in Brussels
Urban architecture - TU Delft (A)
2020
The Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels (BOZAR) is the last building designed by Victor Horta. It stands out for its architectural complexity, derived from its integration into a highly demanding urban environment nearby.
The museum, unable to grow upwards, extends downwards into the ground. For its lighting, two elements are utilized: skylights and light shafts. These light shafts are courtyards that bring natural light into the exhibition spaces, and their unusual shapes result from their integration within the museum spaces.
Following a graphic analysis of the BOZAR building and its light shafts, a pavilion is designed to propose incorporating these courtyards into the museum tour, as they currently only serve a lighting function. To integrate them, they would be transformed into hidden gardens within the museum’s depths, featuring seating areas, flower pots, and a cable system to support climbing plants. The pavilion presents a dry construction using prefabricated elements.

“120x6
m”
Undergrad P6 ETSAM UPM (awarded with Honors) 2020-2021
https://archive.dpa-etsam.com/projects/120x6-m
The design studio begins with a question: how to live La Castellana, one of Madrid’s main axes, especially after 2020. This question is approached with three design proposals; all of which strive to be urban architecture, serving both La Castellana and Madrid as a whole.
The exercise focuses on the extension of the Bankunion building by Corrales and Molezun – one of Madrid’s contemporary masterpieces located between La Castellana and Serrano - by changing its current office function to that of housing. Bankunion is placed perpendicularly to La Castellana and the extension is designed to follow this same directionality to connect La Castellana, Serrano, and a series of other urban spaces. The extension aims to have its own identity, while preserving and respectfully coexisting with Bankunion’s identity.
With the help of a smaller intervention, a kiosk, the proposal aims to create an urban tissue integrated by La Castellana’s promenade, a small square, a patio below the Bankunion, an inner street, a large terrace and Serrano. This is further supported by a series of productive spaces strategically placed to benefit from the flow of people travelling between La Castellana and Serrano. This urban and productive tissue created by the the extension and kiosk working in tandem, will effectively benefit both the new houses and the city beyond.

Urban furniture design for a fountain in Madrid
Undergrad P6 ETSAM UPM (awarded with Honors) 2020-2021
https://archive.dpa-etsam.com/projects/120x6-m
As in the projecy before (04), the design studio begins with a question: how to live La Castellana, one of Madrid’s main axes, especially after 2020. This question is approached with three design proposals; all of which strive to be urban architecture, serving both La Castellana and Madrid as a whole
In this small scale intervention, three pieces of urban furniture are designed and located at San Juan de la Cruz Fountain, a fountain located in La Castellena. Using the favourable atmosphere surrounding the fountain, they recover a small portion of green space next to the fountain, currently unused, and designate it for public use. By doing this, a fountain that only had a monumental identity can now also be used for the everyday activities of the people of Madrid.

Graphic novel 06
A day in the life of Bospolder-Tussendijken
Architectural Ethnography, TuDelft (A) 2020
After an intensive urban, social, and ethnographic investigation of Bosspolder-Tussendijken, a neighborhood in Rotterdam, it is proposed to create a graphic novel that explores the daily lives of a group of people in this neighborhood and how architecture and urban planning influence their lives.

Reuse the Fallen Church
2020
The proposal is a structure that leans on the ruin. This structure covers the church and is used to hang the new programs from it. It preserves the ruin and doesn’t modify the church’s original spaces, which become a street and a public square
Autonoma home
¿How much space does it take to live in a productive garden? 2021
This project is a hypothesis that investigates how it would be possible to live in homes with complete autonomy. It proposes a linear dwelling with integrated hydroponic systems, energy generation through biomass, water harvesting, and solar generation. The structure is built using a repetitive timber system, and the construction is modular.

Practices on Social and Ecological Mythologies
2023
In this workshop, we worked with local associations and the natural and cultural landscape of Morfi, a small coastal village in the peninsula of Greece. Inspired by the designs of Enzo Mari and addressing the needs of the residents, we designed and built easily removable tables and benches for transporting by hand within the village and by car to the surrounding landscapes.
