board guide
... these are a few of my favourite things... There’s been a huge shift in the art of longboarding over the past few years. High-performance boards continue to evolve into ever-more-efficient wave-riding vehicles; we have ultimate noserider specialist boards; and it’s probably in the area of single-fin designs that the most changes are currently being enjoyed. Whichever way you see your surfing progressing, this cross-section of some of the best boards available is presented to allow you to consider and compare.

Purely late ’50s, early ’60s design. For those looking for a board that holds true to the D-Fin tradition, this is the board for you. This totally rolled bottom, narrow nosed, widehipped tail log has a 9 1/2” reverse pixie D-Fin and turns on a dime. Wide hips in the tail, mean that the extra curve in the rail towards the back equals a much easier board to turn than most other logs. Available in lengths from 9’0” to 10’0”.

Created for the Hawaiian powerhouse, the Kai Sallas Pro Model is the “high performance” Hawaiian longboard. Similar to the Beach Break, the Ehukai has a fuller, thicker outline to withstand the North Shore’s powerful surf. Its featured diamond tail has a little more volume behind the fin that creates more bite when there is more water moving under your board. Available in lengths from 9’0” to 9’6”.

The Flying Fish is a EPS foam core performance fish which features stringerless flex-and-memory return. This can turn on a dime, and drive when it’s required, this board is more for the average to advanced. The 2.5’’ thickness of the board under the chest area makes this board a great wave catcher.

This board is a great all-round performer, surfs well on both point and beach breaks. Its medium rocker, performance rail line and hotted-up concave bottom gives the surfer a very responsive fast board. It will also nose ride well, turn on a dime and paddle into waves easily.

Inspired by the width and flattness of its predecessors, the MT-3 is designed to paddle in easily and trim down the line yet retain high performance, tight turns and drive. Lacking the skatey flowing style of the fish, the MT-3 is every bit a performance shortboard, but with the benefits of a significantly larger, fuller board. A quad fin set-up gives this pocket rocket superb speed down the line.

Definitely in the realms of the traditional, the Special Blend is a soft-railed, flatter rockered board that paddles and trims like its more log-inclined peers. But a pulled-in rounded pintail and the addition of side fins make the Special Blend loose off the back foot with plenty of pizzazz when it counts.

Almost a modern rendition of the egg, the Camel has the width, volume and flatter rocker of a mal in the front two thirds. But in the tail, a double-concaved rounded pintail, coupled with a two-plus-one fin set-up make it a very exciting combination. An easy paddler with a soulful flow down the line, the Camel has it where it counts and can turn on a dime wihen the necessity arises. The perfect board for a longboarder wanting to go short, without entering the realms of a pure thruster shortboard.
