Ritual for the month

Letting go of the old and bringing in the new by Jovi Hoonjan, Shamanic Joy UK I was kindly invited to Jan Reid's Equinox night celebrations on 22nd September. I was honoured to have Oriel Lux with me and the two of us drummed and rattled throughout the evening, We stood around the fire pit and honoured the four directions and we then carried out a wonderfully simple and powerful ritual this is what I want to share with you today.
Ideally, you would carry out this ritual outdoors with a nice fire burning. If that is not possible, you could use your indoor fireplace/log burner or a candle. You will need two dry sticks that have naturally fallen on the ground if you are outdoors or have a fireplace/log burner. If using a candle, just use two long match sticks. Step 1 - Hold a stick in each hand. Step 2 - In the stick in your left hand, blow all the things you want to let go of or change in your life, something that is holding you back. Really visualise that your breath is carrying out the intention from your mind, body, soul and spirit and placing it into the stick. Allow up to 5 minutes to do this step. Step 3 - When you are ready, throw the stick into the fire and watch it burn. Allow the smoke that is produced to cleanse your aura and confirm to you that your request has been heard and the universe has already started to work on them. If you are using a candle and matchstick, allow the matchstick to burn all the way along. Step 4 - In the stick in your right hand, blow into it all the things you want to bring into your life, for your highest good. Everything you want that you know will enhance your life and will bring to you happiness, balance and peace. Allow up to 5 minutes to carry out this step. Step 5 - When you are ready, hold the stick with both hands in prayer position in front of your heart. Close your eyes and with one more breath anchor the wishes into the stick. Then throw it into the fire. Watch the fire burn the stick, taking your requests and transmuting them from dreams to reality. Waft the smoke around and over you, waft it upwards to the universe. Step 6 - Thank the fire and the universe for helping you with this ritual. Step 7 - Drum and rattle and celebrate the changes that are coming your way. Step 8 - Relax, feel, sense and see the changes happen... .

31 October - Festival of Samhain by accredited Crystal Healer Sarah Jane As the wheel turns again, we now enter the third harvest of the year Samhain otherwise know as Halloween. One of the cross-quarter days situated between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice and sits opposite Beltain for this night Magic is heavy in the air and the veil between the worlds is thin.
Samhain is a good time to tie up loose ends, pay unpaid debts, finish arguments etc, a time to put everything to rest and prepare to rest yourself. It is also the time to celebrate the wild hunt as the Horned God gathers the lost souls who linger or are unwary.
Pronounced as 'Sow'ain', the most important festival in the old tradition (Pagan) year and marks the end and the beginning of the wheel of the year, just the same as New Year’s Eve. Rituals begin after dark peaking at midnight and often go on into the next day, the 1st of November, New Year’s Day.
I always make a small Samhain alter with photos of my beloved family and friends who have departed with a candle to light on Samhain eve to honour them, however, you decide to celebrate remember to leave out some food and pour some of whatever you’re drinking onto the ground for the elementals and fairies too as this is also one of the best evenings to commune with the fay folk as well.
As it’s the end of the agricultural year it reminds us that death is not an end, as once again we know spring will return and bring the shoots of new life, lighter warmer days and the energy of excitement of what is to come as the earth begins to renew itself. We say goodbye to the old things we no longer need or serve us and goodbye to the spirits of our ancestors that have passed over.

Samhain is not about vampires, werewolves, and zombies but our dearly departed. Samhain is a time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is at its thinnest, a time when the spirits of loved ones can return and so we invite our dead to draw near and a special place is set at the table with their photo and food and drink is served out for any who so wish to join the feast. For this is their festival devoted entirely to them with honour, the Feast of the dead, we celebrate their life and honour our beloved ancestors with respect and love giving thanks for all they gave and lessons they taught us. As we have invited them to this party, they are the guest of honour. Traditionally a candle to guide the spirits of loved one’s home is lit in the window, which also deters any unwanted spirits and is the origins of the pumpkin or jack-o-lantern. The spirit of the loved ones recently departed are then guided to the Summerland's, which is where the spirit rest until it is time to move on. The Crone or Hag Goddesses start their rule now from Samhain to Imbolc. We look for wisdom and guidance. Goddess such as Sheela-na -Gig who represents the entrance to darkness, gestation and going back to the mother into her womb and birthing into the other side, and Kerridwen who lives in the underworld beneath Lake Tegid (Lake Bala) in north Wales. She now deepens into herself and enters her cave, the place between the worlds where she tends to her cauldron, stirring her sacred brew ready for those who seek to drink her alchemy of liquescent magic and journey with her, to let go of the old and embrace the new.

Celestial Forecast by Joanna Bristow-Watkins My monthly celestial forecast is designed to highlight significant dates, either from ancient folklore, or on which you can 'tune-in' to higher frequencies. This is part of my philosophy to reconnect with forgotten knowledge and apply ancient wisdom for modern living. Whilst considerable effort is made to ensure accuracy, this is not an exact science and sources are sometimes contradictory.
October in Britain features the full splendour of autumn colours with an array of brown, red and golden yellow mixed with the remaining green as trees shed their leaves. Nature is truly remarkable; this process eliminates environmental toxins which have been collected, and trees do it to protect themselves. In winter sunshine, water would continue to evaporate from the leaves, and should the groundwater freeze, the tree's water supply would no longer be guaranteed. Hence the plant produces phytohormones and directs them to its leaf stalks. These hormones cause a corky layer to form, then the leaves fall off. This cork prevents pathogens such as fungi or bacteria from penetrating. Furthermore, should it snow, the tree will not have to bear the additional weight of snow on the leaf surfaces. This month is the ideal time to harvest chestnuts, conkers and apples and on the allotments, we have many seasonal vegetables including broccoli, leeks, turnips, potatoes, kale plus of course squashes including pumpkin. It's easy to see why apple bobbing and pumpkin carving became associated with Halloween, celebrated on the 31st. We also have two separate sets of Meteor Showers, the Draconids (peaks 8th/9th) and the Orionids (peaks 20th/21st). The month of October was named after 'octo' meaning 8th in Latin, as October was the 8th month when the year started in March. To the Anglo-Saxons, October was called Winterfylleth, or the “winter full moon,” because winter was said to begin on the first full moon in October. During October, we have a plethora of international festivals such as World Vegetarian Day (1st), World Mental Health Day (10th), World Food Day (16th), International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (17th) as well as Thanksgiving in Canada (11th). We can also look forward to the London Traditions of Pearly King Harvest Festival (3rd) and October Plenty (usually a Sunday at the end of the month, but looks to be going online again this year), Christian Festival of St Francis of Assisi Day (4th), two annual Egyptian Festivals Going Forth of Isis (6th) & Isia (28th) and Roman October Horse (15th) annual commemorations, plus of course the Pagan Festival of Samhain (better known as Halloween) on 31st. Sarah Jane's Women's Circle Moon Lodge is meeting on Friday 15th. We have Forest Bathing events on Tuesday 12th (Woking), Thursday 14th (London SW20) & Sunday 17th (Shere) and Saturday 30th (Guildford). Aligning with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, and our New Moon New Vision: Moon Alignment Course runs for a full lunar cycle from New Moon on 6th October to New Moon on 4th November. Our Full Moon Meditation takes place 7.30-9.30pm (UK time) on Wednesday 20th, with the Hunter Moon peaking earlier in the day at 15:57.

Friday 1st October is World Vegetarian Day. Established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978, it is a day of celebration "to promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism." It brings awareness to the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle and hence is a time set aside to raise awareness of the positive effects of a vegetarian lifestyle on “humans, other animals and our shared earth.” See more details on the Awareness.com website. Sunday 3rd October, being the first Sunday in this month, is traditionally the Pearly King Harvest Festival at St Martin-inthe-Fields, London, offering a spectacular display of historical London. More at ProjectBritain Website - www.projectbritain.com/curious/october.html
The Pearly Kings & Queens are a popular Cockney tradition dating from the 19th century. It started when a young boy covered a suit with pearly buttons to raise money for the poor at fairs and charity events. Other boroughs followed suit and got their own Pearly King or Queen. The Pearly King image is the author's property. The model is unknown but willingly posed for the photograph; there is no commercial gain from the author's use of this photograph.
Monday 4th October is the Feast of Francis of Assisi in the Christian Calendar, so it is appropriate that it is also World Animal Day since St Francis is the Patron Saint of Animals and the Environment. It is a popular date for animals to be blessed. St Francis, who founded the Catholic Church’s Franciscan order, lived in Italy between approximately 1181 and 1226. He is remembered for his love for animals and nature and his generosity to the poor, as well as well as his willingness to minister to the lepers. St Francis was cannonised (pronounced a Saint), shortly after his death (in 1228) by Pope Gregory IX. The Pope also laid the foundation stone for the Basilica of St Francis d'Assisi, Italy, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The new energies coming in and the crystalline plasmic frequencies! by Kathy Mingo, Aura Medium and Healer
I am going to put my head above the parapet here and share a channel that was downloaded to myself, and concurrently others, in regards to the new energies we are experiencing on earth right now by using the medium of crystal skulls and also the new dimensional entities that communicate through them. Healers and channels available to access beyond the “norm” are becoming pure vessels for this ultra-high frequency.
Energy is a form of communication so those of you that are questioning my sanity, allow me some lenience whilst I deliver this strange channel. Dismiss it if you like but if it resonates on an unknown level it is doing its job as we are expanding our consciousness beyond the blinkered vision of our individual realities. We are being asked to suspend our mental constrictions and move into a more harmonic way of presence. We are blocked by our own distorted beliefs and older blueprinted outlooks hunkered into the last millennium. There were 27 skulls altogether that were from Lyra, they called themselves the Vegaes and when communicating via telepathy, they seemed to intermingle their energies to speak as a unified force.

We are being asked at this time to suspend old thoughts and accept a newer (I feel ancient but new to us) form of understanding that forces us to accept the reality that we are moving towards a new dawn of dimensional knowledge that will challenge our old outmoded principles and bring us as a collective humanity to a much deeper understanding of why we are here and who we truly are. The way we see and hear the frequency of light and sounds will alter exponentially into what they called High Resonance Clarity. Our optical responses will deviate into fuller Spectrum configuration to what they said bring us out of analogue and more aligned to the rest of the universe. Coincidentally as we have moved out of analogue transmissions on Earth to a more digitised way it seems to have spring boarded our consciousness evolution into something astral but tangible. The essence of communication seemed to link more to Quantum bit (4 packets of data) rather than binary. Quantum supercomputers are literally becoming used at google etc, so it seemed apt that we are receiving information in the newer format. They brought imagery into the focus of celestial Cintamani stone and asked for its prophecy to be revealed through the exchange of our thoughts and ideas. These gems which hold the hopes of humanity have several star systems homes beyond the veil of our sight and understanding.

We look towards the heavens for celestial guidance, but we have, and have always had, the divine guidance to bring our own awareness into the corporeal world. As technology moves to greater bandwidths, I feel more confident that we can raise our own vibrations to regain a certain sense of control over our frequencies. Plasma light and intelligent light are moving towards a grand trine of human potential not seen on this planet since the fall of the Ascended civilisations. I too must open my consciousness to accept we are just a tiny slice of spectral light within an ocean of divine light beings.

Not far from where I live, there is a small forest. It reminds me of something from a Harry Potter film. The forest is crisscrossed by walk paths and dirt tracks. Yet, once you have entered it, it is quite possible to lose your bearings. Oh, I love to lose my bearings and indeed myself in the magic of that forest. Some of the trees have become close friends. I make a point of visiting them regularly. I embrace them and give them healing. I speak to them and I listen to their wisdom. They soothe me and help me regain my balance. There are several burial mounds in the area, dating back to Bronze Age or early Iron Age. The knowledge that there have been people living there for thousands of years adds a special feeling to the place. Human activities, feelings, thoughts, desires and all aspects of past cultures have left a memory.
If you stand very still and honour the sacredness of the place, you can pick up vibrations from past times. We close your eyes, so that we can see more clearly We stop listening, so that we can hear the soft whispers from the past We drop to our hearts, so that we can sense the emotions of our ancestors We raise our hands in greeting to those that walked before us We realize that we breathe the same air, drink the same water, and gaze at the same stars as our ancestors did And The Seven Sisters of the Pleiades dance in the night sky and we watch in awe One of the trees is intertwined with another from the ground up. The point where they divide into separate trunks has formed a little bowl. It is filled with water, that has transmuted into a tea coloured liquid from its contact with wood, bark, leaves, fungi and all that is living on and with the tree. I consider it “holy water”.

Each time I visit the tree, I perform a small ritual, where I dip my finger into the bowl and then smear a few drops of the water onto my forehead. It is almost as if I am receiving a baptism and becoming a member of the clan of the forest. When I visited the forest last week, I leaned my head against the tree, closed my eyes and asked for guidance. The tree spoke to me and said that it is difficult to navigate when you are standing amongst trees and unable to realize the width and breadth of the forest. If you allow spirit to lift you above the trees, you will be able to view the great expanse of the forest. If you tread carefully, you may even be able to walk on the green floor formed by the collection of tree crowns.
Always remember to rise above in order to get a better view or understanding of a particular situation or emotional dilemma. I guess this can be one meaning of the expression “lift your spirit”. Sometimes, it makes sense to move from being a participator to becoming an observer. If you miss the bus and you participate in that situation, there is a risk that it will affect you in a negative way, potentially with anger and frustration. However, if you simply make an observation that you can see the tail lights of the bus when it pulls out of the bus stop before you had time to reach it, the energy of the situation will be quite different. Now you realize that you will have time to buy a cup of coffee, make a phone call to a friend or maybe even strike up a conversation with someone else at the bus stop, and then happily catch the next bus. Participate or observe? Think about it.
Shifting your position, if just a little bit, might make a huge difference. You can “shift your position” in many different ways; physically, metaphorically, energetically, mentally, emotionally and many more. There are even expressions in our language to remind us of this: “viewpoint”, “from another angle”, “to rise above”. I leave it as your homework to think about this and what it means. The tree also reminded me about fractals. Fractals are patterns that repeat themselves across different scales. Examples are flowers and sea shells. The tree told me that fractals are not only found in the material world but you can also find them in thoughts, emotions, feelings, dreams and so on. This is unknown to most people but the tree wanted me to become aware of it. Each square inch of the ground is a representation of the Universe.

The Universe is a square inch representation of a larger Universe. Look to the whole picture. This is found by raising your focus to the sky and looking into space OR by lowering your gaze to study an ant busying about in a square inch of ground. The tree continued its exploration into metaphysical mathematics and mentioned pixels. This planet is a pixel in a larger picture. The solar system is a pixel in an even larger picture, on a cosmic level. You must defocus your gaze and distance yourself from individual pixels. Roam on ever higher levels for greater clarity. This goes for sight, vision, sound, touch, scent, feelings, thoughts, ideas and all sensations of mind, body, soul and spirit. So I come back to the importance of shifting your position when observing the world around you but in a huge variety of ways.
I selected two trees as focal points. Then I proceeded to walk the lemniscate, rounding each tree as I moved along a figureeight in my pursuit of Ouroboric eternity. When I had steadied my pace, I half closed my eyes and allowed my breathing to slow, as I dropped into a nonordinary state of mind. I called upon my helping spirits and together we reached out to the Earth Serpent to partake of her wisdom and knowledge. The multiplicity of her as a She, as well as a He and also as a They, vouches for a multilayered insight into all of time and across all of space.
With humble gratitude, I sat in stillness and meditated on my visit that day. My friends, the trees, stood around me as they always do, composed, proud and protective. Not far from where I was sitting, I noticed the typical hat of a porcini mushroom. I moved closer to it and I saw more of them. I picked a selection of big and small ones to cook for dinner. I thanked the forest for rewarding my visit with peace, insight and food. And my day came to a close.

In the beginning was the great wave, where the Being of Sound was building. There was sand nor sea, nor cool ripples Earth was not, nor heaven above. The opening void was, and growth, nowhere.

Silence - the vast unmanifested space. Within the silence, sound speaks and creates. With the experience of sound and tone, we come so very close to the creative forces of our world. A tone speaks to us and creates within us. Through a tone, we can hear something touch the deepest part of ourselves, move us and reveal qualities of the soul. A tone can evoke stillness, religiosity, awakening the warmth of our hearts. It moves past our thinking mind and mingles with our deeper feeling. The movement of tone and vibration is a working creative element that is the basis of all that is in the material world. It is like the outspoken creative divine word, manifested. Behind this word lies intention. Much like us, when we speak, we speak to create, and we have an intent behind our speech. When I make a gong, the process starts before I touch the brass. I start with an intention. What is this gong for, and for whom? I set my intention, empty myself and observe. With an Earth gong, One feels oneself settle, and be brought down in connection with the centre of the earth. Awareness is brought down through the earth's crust and then further to the core of our world. As though magnetically, the body connects to this strong light energy as it rises up into the body. Making an Andromeda gong is very different. The sensation is very ethereal. It is as though the area around the body is wreathed in a fine and sensitive rising mist, like the spray that surrounds a waterfall. It sensitizes and quickens our finer bodies, releasing earth-coarseness. These two types of gongs are the ones I make the most, with their complementary influences and sound, but I work with a lot of different intentions and energies. The most wonderful processes happen with gongs that are made on request. It is both beautiful and humbling to witness what is brought forth with the making of these gongs, as they touch on the qualities and the life paths of the people that request them. These processes are always a journey of discovery, as I have no idea what awaits when I start. Often they involve the need to transform old energies, or ask for something to come to consciousness.

With intention set and energy witnessed, the work commences. By hand, a brass circle is cut and filed. The metal is then brought to the forge to be heated in the flames, releasing all the tension in the material as it anneals. After cleaning, it is ready to be hammered. I first hammer out the central boss with a round headed hammer and planish it to a smooth surface. On the back of the gong I engrave a name in runes corresponding to the intention. Then, with thousands to tens of thousands of hammer blows, I work the entire surface of the gong. By this, I make a deep connection with the material and the intention. It is by spending time with the gong while making it, being involved with it in feeling, that the gong becomes precious. When that happens, you have made the connection. When it no longer leaves you cold, but it touches your heart is when things start to flow.
The main component of brass is copper. Copper is a very interesting metal. It is possible to make a spiritual connection with the qualities of this metal. What you then find is as if you are being carried in a warm, wide, egoless expanse. This copper-Venus quality could be called facilitating empathy. It gives of itself completely in order to carry and contain the energy of another element. It joyfully desires connection. It is a wonderful metal for working with the carrying of an intention. In itself however, it lacks the strength to create sound. For this, there needs to be an Ielement. Whereas copper is all expansive width, the Zinc added to make brass, or Tin added to make bronze, add an element of selfhood, of inward strength.
When the gong has been hammered and shaped, holes need to be drilled, a rivet set in the hole, and the rivet drilled again. This is so that the string running through the gong doesn’t touch the edge of the gong as it is played. The model of my gongs is unique in the sense that they are a embossed gong without a turned over edge. This allows vibrations to run in two directions, axially and radially, giving them a big range and possibility in sound expression. It was originally conceived by my mentor Ton Akkermans, who has, over the years, passed the craft on to me. With the holes drilled and string run through, I can listen to the gong for the first time. At this point, I almost always need to make adjustments. This is a careful process of knowing where to tap, bend and heat and is a real search for just the right sounds. What I look for when tuning a gong is a sound that corresponds with the intention in personality. When this is achieved, and the sound has a quality of freedom to it, stretching out as it were, that the gong is finished. It carries the intention that can be experienced as an inward sign when concentrated on, or while playing it, and it is ready to do its work in the world.

THE NAG HAMMADI LIBRARY In December 1945, three Arab peasants made an astonishing archaeological discovery in Upper Egypt. Muhammad Ali and his two brothers were riding their camels to the Jabal al-Tarif in order to gather sabakh, a soft soil used to fertilize their crops. They unexpectedly hit a red earthenware jar, almost a metre high. He excitedly smashed the jar with his mattock, hoping to find treasure, but when he peered excitedly inside all he could see was a collection of old books – thirteen papyrus books or codices bound in leather. These would become known as the codices of the Nag Hammadi Library, a collection of early Christian and Gnostic texts. So why were these texts buried? The Nag Hammadi texts, and others like them, were denounced as heresy by orthodox Christians in the middle of the second century. Possession of such books was made a criminal offence and copies of such books were burned and destroyed. It is thought the Nag Hammadi texts were buried by monks from a nearby monastery in the 4th century. These diverse texts range from secret gospels, poems, cosmology, descriptions of the origin of the universe, to myths, magic and instructions for mystical practice. Arguably one of the most important archaeological
discoveries of the 20th century and yet I had never heard of them!
I stumbled across these gnostic texts whilst writing Apostle to Mary Magdalene and felt inspired to write two books, Mary Magdalene’s Legacy and Mary Magdalene’s Final Legacy. I can recommend Marvin Meyer’s book or they are available to read for free on www.gnosis.org.

So why are they important and of relevance today? I believe the codices were written by Mary Magdalene and the next two generations of her family at Lake Mareotis community, Alexandria, Egypt in the 1st – 2nd century. I have had this verified by a respected kinesiologist. Mary Magdalene is shown to have a deep spiritual relationship with Yeshua (see Gospel of Mary, Pistis Sophia, Dialogue of the Saviour) and is transmitting Yeshua’s secret teachings or higher mysteries, which he was unable to do whilst here on earth. We are at a critical time for humanity and it is described in these texts written almost 2000 years ago! If we want to know what will happen in the future, we should turn to history, or in this case, these sacred texts. As the Nag Hammadi Library extends to around 1000 pages, I am writing a blog on the ones I feel are a priority. This is my interpretation but reading the texts will communicate with your soul and change you on a cellular level – this has been my experience anyway!

It may be that the item turns up completely randomly, with a friend, in another building, it is often unexpected. This is because Archangel Chamuel sees everything. He also sees a solution to every problem, so again ask Archangel Chamuel if you are faced with problems emotional or mental. If, for instance, you don’t know what job role to take, ask Archangel Chamuel and he will guide you.

Archangel Zadkiel’s name means ‘the righteousness of God’ and his aura is deep indigo blue. Whereas Archangel Chamuel sees everything and can help you find things, Archangel Zadkiel is often known as the Angel of memory, he will help you remember/recall the information you need to know. For instance, when students are going in for exams; Archangel Zadkiel can help you remember the facts and figures you need, and of course Archangel Uriel (who I have mentioned before) will help you with wisdom and those ideas that you need for the exam. As Archangel Zadkiel is linked to memory his other role is healing our memories. His focus of forgiveness and memory can help you heal emotional pain from your past. He can help you release negative feelings from your past, that are anchored in memory, so that you can move forward positively. Tahini is made from sesame seeds, which are a rich form of calcium, iron, magnesium, and essential fats, highly beneficial for the cardiovascular and nervous system. Oats offer a slow release of energy, rich in minerals, B vitamins and soluble fibre (beta-glucans), which is beneficial for gut health.

100g oats 2 tablespoons chia / flax seeds Pinch salt 50g cranberries 120g tahini 60g maple syrup 150g dark choc 1 tbsp coconut oil
In a large bowl add the oats, seeds, salt, and cranberries In a saucepan melt coconut oil with dark chocolate. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the maple syrup and tahini. Add wet ingredients to dry, and mix until well combined. Transfer to a parchment-lined Swiss roll tin, or two loaf tins and press down to create a smooth surface. Chill for 1 hr/ overnight, then cut into equal-sized bars or squares. Store in fridge and eat within 1 week.

Three shifts to REALLY get Digital Transformation on the agenda

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY
Well over a year on from the early impacts of the global pandemic, I’ve read a flurry of articles on Digital Transformation. I have discussed at length the trends and yet the reoccurring patterns still manage to harbour progress for many businesses (whether we like to admit it or not!). Instead of penning the woes which tend to echo for many across the globe, I thought it would be worth getting down the top three critical shifts I believe all organisations, large and small, private or public must make to get serious about Digital Transformation and clearly sighted on the 2021/22 agenda.
BE HONEST WITH EMPLOYEES Is honesty the best policy when it comes to digital? ‘Abso-friggin-lutely’ – since when did plotting a digital strategy become a need-to-know dossier for only the chosen ones?! Yes, OK we all get the competitive advantage slant to achieving your ‘rabbit out of a hat’ moment, but this could be doing more to prevent your strategy coming to fruition than you realise. It’s time to get your employees comfortable on the subject, help them to understand ways in which digital can act as an enhancement to existing efforts and be sure to put in place a way for them to ask questions regularly. At times in our careers, we’ve all felt a little uncomfortable or intimidated by new technologies, processes or even suggested outcomes – and most importantly, let’s not forget, it’s always good to talk. The emphasis on getting company culture and mindset in gear for digital change is a frequent theme. This doesn’t happen overnight; in fact, this doesn’t just happen – it’s an always-on method for empowering your workforce to strive for better. The examples I have of employee fatigue are due to feeling ‘out of the loop’ on the digital planning and are often a result of not being better informed or consulted at any stage of the process – don’t leave your workforce sailing at rough seas to a promised land they don’t believe exists.

OLD HABITS DIE HARD...?
TAKE YOUR DATA SERIOUSLY The rumour that for years your IT systems have been processing and (likely) stockpiling data has, until only very recently, crossed your mind…Ah yes, GDPR that’s the one – the compliance prompt that got the data conversations happening in board rooms across the globe, in what was perhaps a first for many. In this case I’m assuming a water tight approach when it comes to adhering to GDPR compliance and so we can move to the point as to why making the shift for taking your data seriously is of paramount importance. ‘Old habits die hard’, so goes the saying and it’s fair to say that those who will leave the competition behind will be those businesses who invest now (or will have already) to understand their customers through data and be better poised to predict demands. If you haven’t already, now is the time to find out what data you have, where it is securely stored and how requests are routed inbound and outbound for the likes of reporting / wider business intelligence. Invest in your own data of excellence and make this centrally visible to all in the organisation. When it comes to revising KPIs you need one version of the truth, get everyone clearly sighted on the rules of engagement and leave no room for error when adhering to guidelines and data compliance.
'DON'T GO CHASING WATERFALLS...' The pitch has ended, the board agree, and the funds are allocated – the CEO signs on the dotted line and so it begins. For some the IT / CTO takes the lead, for others a Programme Lead is hired in and next comes the ‘see you in 18 months’ wave into the sunset, as everyone is left in anticipation of what will be… As time passes the wider business is left shackled to prevent straying too close to what could be deemed disruptive to the programme. Frustration’s boil and morale hits the floor – budget revision after budget revision, the promise of better days seems a far distant memory. If this sounds all too familiar, then perhaps the waterfall project approach has swept up too much of the transformation ambitions in play. I’m not going to bat on about the benefits of Agile, many good examples have been shared recently– but what I will say is there must be a strategy in parallel to large scale transformations which focuses on how to make smaller improvements to complement the end game.

PROVIDE THE RIGHT RESOURCES Ensure resources are available and willing to support employees whose eyes and ears remain close to the customer playing back their needs day to day. It is this crucial play which could influence your investment paying early dividends through the likes of retention and NPS. The alternative is to risk an even harder climb, as your employees work tirelessly to convince your customers to sit patiently often left repeating the words ‘bear with us, we are working on this…’
In summary, how you choose to sight employees on the digital challenge, knowing where and how to harness owned data and ensure more than one route for measured impact (on potentially your biggest investment risk to date) is in my view, fundamental to targeting a better set of business outcomes. Digital Transformation is swiftly being acknowledged as a ‘must-have’ strategic pillar for thousands of businesses globally. For some however, the question of when this day will come still remains.

Wasted Time The average UK SME is wasting 30% of their time chasing approximately 5 outstanding invoices at any given point. This means that the true cost of late payments isn’t just ‘monies owed,’ it’s monies owed plus costs incurred while chasing payments. Interest Charges With inconsistent cash flows, many small business owners have to result to finance to cover their costs. If they don’t, they may not be able to pay their bills or their staff. As with any loan, financing comes with
