JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019 3
President’s Letter
I am thrilled to have been chosen from an outstanding group of women to serve as the Junior League of Mobile’s 89th President. When I received the call asking me to serve, I immediately knew my answer! Yes! It is an honor to follow in my mother, Lucy Bowman Brady’s footsteps. My mother served as the 67th President in 1997-1998. We are the third mother daughter duo in the history of Junior League of Mobile (JLM). The first was Jean Faulk Radcliff (1964-1965) and Carolyn Radcliff Akers (1991-1992), who served as the 34th and 61st presidents. The second duo was Sarah Long Damson (1985-1986) and Mary Stewart Damson Nelson (20102011), and they served as the 55th and 80th presidents. JLM has been a part of hundreds of families in the Mobile area. It is my hope that we will all continue to pass on the legacy. The questions I am asked most frequently are: “How and why does the Junior League of Mobile do all that it does?” The answers are simple! Junior League of Mobile has a three-part mission: to promote volunteerism, develop the potential of women, and improve communities. We strive every day to reach our members and our community through our mission.
Lucy Pryor Slaton JLM President 2019-20
We have hundreds of dedicated volunteers that take time away from their families and friends to improve our community, raise funds for our mission, research new projects, and train our members on both a personal and professional level. Why do they do all of this, you ask? Our members are a part of JLM because they believe and stand behind our mission. Since 1931, JLM has been and will continue to make an impactful impression on Mobile and Baldwin Counties. We have founded the The Carlen House Museum, The Child Advocacy Center, The Preschool for the Sensory Impaired, Volunteer Mobile, Mobile Arts Council, The Gulf Coast Exploreum Hands-On Science Learning Center, The Drug Education Council, Mobile Public Library’s Bookmobile Program, Mobile Area Education Foundation, the Visiting Nurse’s Association, United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile, and the Child Daycare Association, in addition to others. Last year alone, JLM provided more than 51,000 meals to hungry children, spent countless hours working with the children at Dumas Wesley’s After School Care Program, provided milk and fruit to more than 500 families through Prodisee Pantry, and served hundreds of families and distributed more than 38,000 diapers through the Joseph Project. We do all these things by showing L.O.V. E (Living Our Values Everyday). It is my goal for all our membersProvisionals, Actives, and Sustainers- to L.O.V.E. this year. If we all take a little time to L.O.V.E., we will continue to be able to provide amazing improvements to Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of such a fantastic organization?
Love always, Lucy Pryor Brady Slaton President 2019-20 4 JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019

Letter from the Editor Dear reader, Boxing legend Muhammad Ali once said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” I believe we all have a responsibility to contribute in some way, especially to our neighbors who find themselves in difficult life situations. That desire to give- but not quite knowing how- is what drew me to join Junior League of Mobile in the first place. Nearly three years later, volunteering with JLM has taught me that separately we can help a little, but as one force we can do the most! From making sure children have healthy food, to providing diapers to families and mentoring our youth, Junior League of Mobile volunteers are putting in the work and producing tangible results. I never imagined how many truly inspiring women I would meet in JLM- a collection of leaders, visionaries, professionals, mothers, sisters and activists from all walks of life, coming together with one goal of service in mind.
Allison Bradley FOLIO Editor 2019-20
It’s been a pleasure to highlight the hard work of these dedicated women and the amazing impact JLM has on our community every day. In this issue of FOLIO, you’ll get a glimpse of some of our passion projects, including the new Adopt-A-School program and our diaper bank, which continues to grow in year two. You’ll also learn about big changes coming to BluePass and Christmas Jubilee- two of our biggest fundraising events of the year. Other features include a special exhibit highlighting JLM at the Mobile Carnival Museum, and an event that lets you sip wine from around the world and support our service projects at the same time! None of our efforts would be possible without our friends, supporters, partner agencies and sponsors. We appreciate you more than you know. We hope during this season and throughout the new year, our community will continue to support Junior League of Mobile and join our volunteers in doing the most! Sincerely, Allison Bradley Folio Editor 2019-2020

Promoting Healthy Children through JLM’s Diaper Bank By Sara McGough
“Diaper need”. What does that mean? According to the National Diaper Bank Network, diaper need “is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep an infant or child clean, dry, and healthy.” While promoting and working in the current focus area, “Healthy Children: Hunger, Nutrition, and Fitness”, the Junior League of Mobile (JLM) discovered that diaper need is widespread in our community, and the League had the ability and desire to help. The Junior League of Mobile Diaper Bank grew out of the 2018-2019 Provisional Class project and is now an ongoing project for JLM. The diapers collected, supplies needed, and the packaging area now have a permanent location at Junior League of Mobile headquarters, and the Board of Directors is looking into more space for the bank as it continues to grow by leaps and bounds. The formation of the JLM Diaper Bank could not come at a better time for many parents and caregivers. Families in our own community make daily decisions to go without diapers when the other choice is to go without food or other necessities. Diapers that have been on a baby too long lead to rashes, infections, and irritability, all of which are painful to the child and stressful for the caregiver. In the first year, the JLM Diaper Bank estimates it distributed more than 38,000 diapers. That is 38,000 times a child or adult in our community did not get a rash or infection due to a soiled diaper being on for too long. That is 38,000 times a parent or caregiver did not have to choose between the health of a loved one and another necessity for the family. “Clean diapers are the foundation for having a healthy child,” says JLM President Lucy Pryor Slaton. “A child cannot attend daycare without clean disposable diapers. If a child cannot attend daycare, a parent cannot go to work to make a living,” Slaton reminds us, and thus a parent or caregiver cannot provide for the family. The Provisional Class of 2019-2020 will continue to define and find support for the newly formed Diaper Bank. At the class’s first large group meeting on September 26th, committees will be formed, fundraisers discussed, and marketing will take shape. The work our provisionals do this year will be vital to growing the Diaper
Bank and creating avenues for its future success as a sustainable and worthwhile project for JLM. Chesley Etheridge, Provisional Project Chair, says, “We’re wanting the 2019-2020 Provisional class to be responsible for creating inventive ways to supply the bank … to work together over the next few months, preparing drives and raising money”. Chesley also mentions that we can all look forward to partnering again with The Joseph Project at Dumas Wesley Community Center while also expanding efforts to work with new community partners. “Distribution agencies are very grateful for this partnership,” says JLM President Elect Amanda Gonzales. JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019 13
Former Provisional Project Chair Brynne Mixon says, “I would like to see this bank grow into something bigger than we ever thought… to serve the need in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.” Brynne knows the need is great. The National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) says that 1 in 3 American families need assistance with diapers, because infants need as many as 12 diapers a day, while toddlers need about 8. NDBN estimates that diapers can cost $70-$80 per month, per baby. Lucy Pryor Slaton and Amanda Gonzales emphasize the hope that the JLM diaper bank will become a National Diaper Bank Network member and thus be eligible for grants and national awareness. The 2019-2020 Provisional class will be exploring and creating ways to fill the JLM Diaper Bank this year and for years to come. However, we all - provisional, active, sustainer or non-member - can support the Diaper Bank in simple, even fun ways.
HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN HELP THE DIAPER BANK STAY FULLY STOCKED: 1. Buy some diapers the next time you are running errands and
drop them at JLM headquarters.
2. Bring your friends together with purpose by hosting a
diaper shower.
3. Ask friends and family to bring diapers to your next supper
club, book club or family dinner.
4. Participate in one of the packing shifts at headquarters. 5. Go to JLM’s Amazon Wishlist and purchase diapers with just
a few clicks. From the JLM website, find “Support Us” and click
on “Junior League of Mobile Diaper Bank”, then select
“Shop Our Amazon WishList”.
6. Become a Sponsor. Anyone can sponsor diapers for a child for
one week, one month, six months or even one year.
7. Donate money directly to the Diaper Bank through a
contribution to JLM.
“Spread the news about the good work that JLM is doing to help the diaper need in our community,” Lucy Pryor Slaton reminds us.
Brynne Mixon agrees, with the simple closing message:
“Promote, promote, promote!” 14 JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019

Sustainer Spotlight: Faye Olensky After 10 years at the active level in Junior League of Mobile, members can choose to become sustainers. This means fewer monthly requirements, but just as vital a role in ensuring the league’s success. This issue’s Sustainer Spotlight highlights Faye Olensky, a prime example of a sustainer who has never stopped contributing her talents to the league. Faye is celebrating 20 years as a member of JLM, joining in 1999. Over the years, Faye has dedicated much of her time to making Christmas Jubilee the successful fundraiser it is today. After chairing several CJ committees, including Publicity, Printing and Merchants, Faye eventually served as Christmas Jubilee Chair. Today, JLM is fortunate to have Faye as a Sustaining Advisor on the Fund Development Council.
WE ASKED FAYE A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT HER YEARS SERVING WITH JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE What drew you to join Junior League of Mobile in the first place, and why have you stuck with it? I am not originally from Mobile, so I joined JLM originally to meet new friends. I also wanted to find a group of women who loved helping the community in which they lived as much as I did. And what I found was a group of strong, successful women who work hard for their community and who I’m proud to call my friends today, even though we may not see each other often. What has been your all-time favorite placement in Junior League of Mobile? Anyone who knows me knows that Christmas Jubilee is my all-time favorite placement. I worked on the committee for many years before chairing the event in 2009 and have served as the Sustainer Advisor a couple of years since. Building the event from the ground up, year after year, and seeing the community come out and support JLM, our mission and all we do in the community is worth all the hard work! Why do you choose to stay involved as a sustaining advisor? I choose to stay involved as a sustaining advisor because I love what JLM stands for and all the good we do in our community! What is the most important thing you’ve learned or gained personally from being in JLM? From serving on committees and chairing committees to serving on the Board of Directors, JLM has taught me to be a better volunteer and a stronger leader. And in the early years, before we all became connected electronically, JLM taught me how to keep good notes/files in order to pass along a great notebook for those who served behind me. What are your hopes for JLM moving forward? I hope that JLM continues promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving our community for many years to come! Any advice for new or future JLM members/leaders? Really take time to learn all that Junior League of Mobile has done in the Mobile community and build upon these great projects. Together, we ALL do make a difference!

Adopt-A-School Program By Catherine
Cochran
In 2015, Junior League of Mobile (JLM) kicked off the impact area of Healthy Children, Hunger, Nutrition and Fitness. Since then, JLM has supported community projects that address the objectives of hunger, nutrition and fitness by funding them with both time and money. JLM is dedicated to addressing its impact area of hunger in school-aged children in Mobile County. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 13 percent of Americans suffer from food insecurity. In Mobile County, the number is higher at approximately 19 percent. Most school-aged children are provided meals while at school through free or reduced lunch programs. However, many students are without food on weekends and long holidays. In addition, these children are in need of other basic necessity items such as clothing, hygiene supplies and school supplies. In order to provide a bigger impact and support both the nutrition and fitness objective, in addition to the hunger objective, the league will focus on one elementary school in Mobile County through its new Adopt-A-School program this year. In partnering with the school, JLM will provide financial assistance and offer volunteer and program support for enrichment programs and special activities. The funds will support a backpack nutrition program, snack pantry, supply pantry, uniform closet, fitness and P.E. equipment, providing a playground work day and additional financial assistance. To support the hunger objective, Junior League of Mobile will continue to purchase and collect food for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack items, as part of the backpack nutrition program. The school will send the food home with students they consider chronically hungry each Friday, ensuring the children have enough to eat over the weekend and long holidays.
24 JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019
JLM will also purchase and collect donated food items for a snack pantry that will be maintained at the school site. Snacks will consist of individually wrapped, shelf-stable food items such as granola bars, applesauce, fruit cups and crackers. In addition, JLM will collect new or excellent condition uniforms and clothing items to match the school’s uniform items, including new socks, underwear and belts. To support the fitness objective, Junior League of Mobile will organize a drive to collect fitness items and P.E. equipment that the school contact says are needed. The items collected will be donated to the school for use in their fitness program. JLM will also organize a playground work day for simple ground maintenance and playground upkeep. Finally, as funds are available within the Adopt-A-School operational budget, JLM will consider matching funds raised for financial requests for classroom projects through the website DonorsChoose. org. Junior League of Mobile will partner with the selected school for three years with an annual review process. The league is excited about the positive changes this new program will make in the lives of our children, from having enough to eat, to getting proper school supplies, uniforms and playground equipment to stay active and fit. We hope you’ll join JLM in supporting this new Adopt-A-School initiative, just one of the ways Junior League of Mobile is building better communities!

Each year, JLM partners with DYW to host the ladies from each state and connect them with community groups Junior League of Mobile members work with throughout the year. JLM volunteers devote numerous hours to planning Be Your Best Self Day, beginning the process weeks in advance. Aqualyn Kennedy, the DYW ‘Be Your Best Self ’ Chair, coordinated this year’s event, handling everything from securing the volunteer sites to making sure the young ladies had meals throughout the day. Kennedy says she never could have imagined the profound impact she received from heading this project. “Leading the ‘Be Your Best Self Day’ effort to help our amazing Distinguished Young Women engage in Mobile’s community, with the help of an amazing team of league sisters, was one of the highlights of my JLM experience,” she said. On “Be Your Best Self Day” 2019, DYW delegates kicked off the day bright and early, arriving at JLM headquarters at 8:00 a.m. These young ladies were full of energy and excitement, setting the tone for an impactful and memorable day. JLM sisters were on hand to welcome the young leaders with open arms, sharing information about Junior League of Mobile and the community partners they were about to meet. During the day, JLM members accompanied DYW participants to the four community groups on the schedule: Dumas Wesley Community Center, Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center, The Joseph Project and United Cerebral Palsy.
JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019 29
During their day of service, the Distinguished Young Women bonded with these members of our community in ways they hadn’t anticipated, as detailed during their feedback session during lunch. Their memorable experiences ranged from playing games with the children, to simply listening to their stories, to learning new ways to communicate with our differently-abled children. In a thank you note to JLM, Hanna Pohlmann, DYW of Nebraska, said “Serving at the United Cerebral Palsy Preschool was my favorite event of the entire trip! Thank you for supporting the Distinguished Young Women program and making my time in Mobile so memorable!” The DYW candidates were also able to serve families at the food pantry and plant a garden to demonstrate ways to nurture the community with nutritious foods. All these experiences not only benefited our

community agencies, they also gave the Distinguished Young Women a firsthand lesson in volunteer work, along with touching memories to last a lifetime. Dora Guo says as her fellow DYW sisters returned from their service projects, she learned tremendously from their stories and experiences. “Our reflections afterward truly inspired me to rededicate myself to my community and to empower others to do the same,” she said. As for her main takeaway of the day? The Distinguished Young Woman of America sums it up perfectly:
“Service can make ordinary experiences extraordinary.”

One of the major changes this year is in ticketing. The market will have a digital ticketing program for tickets purchased in advance. Now, shoppers can receive their tickets immediately via email, and those tickets will be accessible with one click. The upcoming Christmas Jubilee will also feature more time with Santa! Santa’s Workshop will be available ALL market long, and it’s included with the price of general admission. You’ll no longer have to worry about scoring tickets to the coveted Breakfast with Santa event of years past. What families loved most about Breakfast with Santa, including getting to meet Santa, creating crafts, and enjoying story time in Santa’s Workshop, will be incorporated throughout each magical day of Christmas Jubilee. Do you hate lugging heavy packages around while you shop? The 2019 market will include a package check to make the shopping experience easier! With the new curbside package pickup, you can check your large, bulky purchases and they’ll be delivered right to your car at the front of the convention center. As you can see, shoppers can expect to find plenty of their favorite aspects of Christmas Jubilees past, while enjoying a market filled with exciting new additions. We hope everyone will join us November 15-17 to kick off a happy and festive season filled with all the best Christmas traditions!

One of the ways new members contribute is through a group-wide provisional project. The current class project is JLM’s diaper bank, which distributed more than 38,000 diapers last year. Grimes says she hopes to see provisionals setting up supply drives, raising money, and creating inventive ways to stock the diaper bank. Projects like the diaper bank help new members develop a strong foundation for service, which is why many women become part of Junior League of Mobile in the first place, including Hannah Brown, a Registered Nurse. “I hope to learn more about the communities and people in Mobile and be more aware of the needs of others around me, as well as how to implement these needs,” Hannah says. New members are also engaged throughout the year through socials and fun orientation events, such as Provisional Super Saturday, which invites provisionals to travel around Mobile and see JLM’s impact on the

Amanda Gonzales, JLM President Elect, says the proceeds from this fundraiser will go a long way toward helping hungry children in our area. “Last year, because of our supporters, we were able to produce more than 50,000 meals for children in need right here in our community,” she explains. At Wine on the River, you can enjoy wine samples from national and international vineyards. The event has an “Around the World” theme focusing on cultural regions. Ticket prices include a souvenir tasting glass, unlimited beverage samples and delicious food from area restaurants and chefs. There will also be live music throughout the afternoon to keep the fun going! This is the third year iHeartMEDIA has brought this amazing festival to the Port City. Rebecca Arbour with iHeartMEDIA says after working alongside JLM for the past few years, choosing the league as this year’s charity recipient was an easy decision. “It’s an incredible thing when a group of determined women can come together, work together, and produce something that makes our community a better place. That’s what Junior League of Mobile is about – and that is what we are about, too,” she says. General admission tickets are on sale for $44 plus taxes and fees at WineOnTheRiverMobile.com. The price will increase to $54 the day of the event, if tickets haven’t sold out. This is a rain or shine event, and festival-goers must be 21 years old to attend. As Arbour says, “From watching the sun set over the water to trying new wines and great food from local chefs, this event IS Mobile.” And yes, there will be screens for watching football. Hands On Volunteer Work Through The
Ready Hands Program By Tabitha Olzinski
44 JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019
After listening to member feedback wanting more flexibility in volunteering, the Ready Hands program was developed. The Ready Hands program was introduced to Junior League of Mobile in 2018 and replaced the Done in a Day placement option. The Ready Hands placement allows members to experience a wide range of community and in-league volunteer opportunities that better fit their schedule and interests. All Ready Hands opportunities are open to all members, not just those who have it as a current placement. It’s also a great way for Provisionals to learn about various placements and make a more informed decision about choosing how they want to serve in JLM. Ready Hands volunteers must do 20 hours of volunteer work during the year to complete their placement. Shifts include a wide range of projects, like playing games with kids at Dumas Wesley Community Center, packing food for families at Prodisee Pantry and working in the Garden of Growing at the Exploreum. It’s truly a hands-on way for JLM members to give back in a tangible way, enforcing our mission of improving communities through trained volunteers. Susan Wright, a ninth year active, says she was invited to join Ready Hands by another member. Susan said, “The member explained that you can pick and choose different projects that spark your interest. With a constantly changing schedule, that fit my needs perfectly.” Susan also says she liked having various placement experiences in one year, connecting you more with the community.

“Emily Staples Hearin:
Grand Dame of Mobile and Carnival” By Allison Bradley The Mobile Carnival Museum celebrates Mardi Gras all year long, but in August and September, the museum also celebrated Junior League of Mobile’s lasting legacy in the Port City! The Carnival Museum featured the exhibit “Emily Staples Hearin: Grand Dame of Mobile and Carnival”. The showing was fourth in a series of quarterly exhibits exploring Mardi Gras monarchs and the effect they have on their community- not only during- but also before and after their reign. Emily Staples (1914-2005) reigned as Queen of Carnival in 1934, but her contributions to Mobile lasted far beyond her reign. Staples was a founding member of several institutions, an appointee on numerous boards and a historical commentator and author. As part of that legacy, she was an early member of Junior League of Mobile. The “Grand Dame of Mardi Gras” exhibit explored the life of this local legend through her beautiful and intricate

Mardi Gras regalia, oil portraits, historic photographs and other works associated with her life. This was the first women-focused exhibit featured at the Carnival Museum, and also celebrated the careers of female artists and designers who were part of Hearin’s circle. When Emily Staples was crowned the 1934 Queen of Carnival, the Great Depression was at its worst point. Staples’ reign provided a bright spot for a community hit hard by the economic collapse. However, her time as royalty was only the beginning of a lifelong dedication to her native city of Mobile. While raising four children, Emily Staples Hearin became a leader and agent for change in her community. In addition to various other boards and organizations, Staples Hearin was an active early member of Junior League of Mobile. JLM was founded in 1925 as the Mobile Charity League. In 1931, the Charity League was incorporated into the Association of Junior Leagues International and officially adopted the Junior League name, which JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE FOLIO MAGAZINE - FALL 2019 47
is now known and respected. Over the course of almost a century, the exhibit explains, Junior League of Mobile has “been a pivotal player in the destiny of the Port City. Art, education, health and industry have all been focuses of the organization’s proactive efforts and positively shaped the trajectory of the Port City.” In addition to Junior League of Mobile, Staples Hearin was an early member of the Maids of Mirth, one of the oldest women’s Mardi Gras organizations. These are just two examples of how Hearin greatly expanded the roles of women in both Carnival and Mobile as a whole. Hearin served on a huge roster of boards for various causes, including the Mobile Carnival Association,
