dakota welty When Giorgio first brought up the idea of checking out Chicago after we were done skating Pittsburgh, I was immediately interested. Prior to this trip, I had never made it to the Midwest and didn’t know a thing about the skate scene out there. We were all excited to see what the mysterious windy city had to offer. However, halfway through our time in Pittsburgh, Giorgio was hesitant of driving the seven and a half hour car ride over to Chicago. Between gas money

and food, we were all pretty low on cash and didn’t know if we would be able to afford the trip. As the first week came to an end in Pittsburgh, we saw that the weather was supposed to rain for the remainder of their time in town. With that in mind, after a few days of Cooper and I pushing the idea on Giorgio, he once again changed his mind. The trip was on. As soon as we made our way into the loop, we were all a bit awe struck with the beauty of the city. Between the

abundance of plazas and perfect marble ledges at every corner, it looked like we were going to have a good time. Spot after spot, I was amazed by all of the things that we were able to skate just in the loop. Not only were the spots nearly perfect, but also security didn’t pose much of a threat, usually getting a solid 30 minutes in at each spot before we got the boot. Not mention, we did not have one run in with the police our entire trip, which is a rarity for skateboarders. Out of all the spots we skated in the loop,

Chase Plaza was definitely a group favorite. With buttery ledges and perfect wallies, it was an east coast skaters paradise and we tried to skate it at least once every night. Besides skating the loop, Pat and Steffen took us to some awesome spots throughout the downtown district. We were all pretty surprised with how large the downtown district actually is, spanning miles out side of the loop itself. However, we ended up spending 99 percent of

our time skating circling around the loop finding spots on almost every block.

before, we were all pretty impressed with Chicago’s idea of the pizza pie.

Alongside spending most of our time skating, the Chicago locals showed us some awesome spots to eat around the city. Staying with Gama the first few nights we were in the city, he took us to some of the best Mexican food that I’ve gotten to enjoy since I’ve been to San Diego. Alongside the Mexican, Pat, Steffen and Brett took us out for some insane deep dish at Uno’s. Never eating deep dish

Leaving the city after being there for only 5 days was definitely a bummer, but it was awesome to finally get to see the windy city and meet some of the locals up there. Everyone that we met in Chicago was extremely friendly and we are already planning our next trip to the Midwest. Thanks to everyone that made the trip so much fun, we can’t wait to do it again.

chicago premiere

on august 20th in chicago, jon schmoldt and mark dunning premiered their new skate videos, Na da Still Chill'n , and deep dish . With a little over 3 years of filming with a broad cast of skateboarders for schmoldt's sequal, and glimpses into countless hours spent skating through the loop twilight in dunnings film, both videos proved the dedication of filmers such as these two. in addition to the video screenings, photos from the filming of each project were included in a photo show by matt gamalinda and myself. illustration by kyle jakubowicz photos by alec ozawa
