Design Portfolio

This Portfolio shows a selection of works done in the previous years. At a very young age, my interest in a combination of creativity, design, sketching, and craftsmanship inspired me to become an Architect. This inspiration grew to become a passion for Architecture. Through my travels I’ve realized that Architecture can define a culture. Each culture is unique and the more we learn about them, the more we appreciate our surroundings and understand why certain things appeal to us. Traveling has been a great influence to my design skills. Visiting different countries around the world has allowed me to experience unique spaces and architecture reflecting each country in a special way. With the works in this portfolio, I aim to give an impression of my skills acquired through my education, personal and professional experience.

URBAN CAYON DALLAS, TEXAS

Graduate School Fall_2016 Urban Canyon Studio Designer I Alejandra Aviles Instructor I Joshua Nason

02

The Thanksgiving Square Plaza has ideal space characteristics with good accessibility, but it lacks the ideal public activity and interest that is needed to make a desire gathering space. The site has a friendly human scale, unfortunately the site is unknown by most of the public. The site lack of programming makes it difficult for people to seek activities and it is unappealing for people to come back. Although the site is fully defined, having a defined boundary makes it difficult for the community to interact with the park.

19

A new vision for Thanksgiving Square Plaza The mixed use recreation of the plaza is intended to serve as an engaging point in the city, to achieve this the plaza will include performance arts spaces, public art exhibits, inclusive play areas, urban agriculture, and dinning area. The Plaza will serve as a new neighborhood park and an after hour destination for the nearby work force, a retreat for residents and a space for tourist to explore.

The Site The site has in-surface connection and off surface connections, fully accessible indoor and outdoor space with a highland/ lowland landscape. The buildings are woven under and into the park a varied topography should create a variety of experiences within the park and create different parcels where you could have independent experiences. The Program Through the study of created fragments spreading out overlapping program, the Thanksgiving Square becomes a destination point that interlocks the underground with the above ground. Sense of disconnection, undefined activity and the internal activity does not work. Symbioscape synthesizes an elevated terrain with an aquatic stratum to further marine science while simultaneously generating an inter-mutual public experience with landscape through levitation. The reflected analogous to aquatic life forms and serve link transmutable atmospheres. A genesis of Dialogue develops through an echoing submersible elevator that transverses between the void of aquatic oblivion, lush coastal vistas, and the urban edge. The structural steel is used to intervene harmoniously with landscape through light weight attributes. In an underwater environment the Thermo form Acrylic is more translucent than glass. The acrylic panels are proven to be great insulators that have extremely high stability and display predictable long term behaviors. Isofloat is a fiber reinforced syntactic foam that can take the form of a hull chassis. The structure was influenced by the analysis of the mineralized skeletal system of Euplectella.

29

Organism Structure Reference The Aquatic Stratum of Symbioscape plays a vital role in marine science. Serves as a laboratory for further marine experiments and studies. The underwater stratum contains submarine capsules that mainly operate to intake injured or harmed aquatic animals as well as other marine life forms to develop further studies. The Aquatic Stratum is made of structural steel and a Thermo form Acrylic Skin allowing to have a translucent glass facade. The structure was influenced by the analysis of the mineralized skeletal system of Euplectella. The hierarchical structure overcomes the brittleness of its constituent material and shows outstanding mechanical rigidity and stability.

04

The Museum of Science is located in Venice, Italy. Situated at the site of San Geremia northern Italy, located in the sestiere of Cannaregio directly in front of San Geremia Church. The apse of the church faces the Grand Canal, between the Palazzo Labia and the Palazzo Flangini. The Museum of Science consists of a main Gallery building and an auditorium. The main building consists of two permanent galleries; The Gallery of Water and The Gallery of Earth. The Gallery of Water exhibits historic water relics. The Gallery of Earth features an outside garden exhibiting Venice natural vegetation as well as an indoor exhibit of natural vegetation.

35

Site Analysis Campo San Geremia calls for an Urban Intervention to revive the urban campo. The Parti of the Museum of Science developed through a study of Urban interventions along the site. The museum replaces the existing hotel and shops building facing the west side of the Campo while maintaining the hierarchical relationship to the facade of San Geremia Church.

YMCA & YOUTH HOSTEL FORTH WORTH, TEXAS

Graduate School Fall_2017 Comprehensive Studio_Final Thesis Designer I Alejandra Aviles Instructor I Bijan Youssefzadeh

05

Through the beginning stage of the design, the approach of engaging a connection between the Hostel and YMCA building was essential. The connection happens at the third level of the YMCA and the ground level of the Hostel. The bridge connection has nice outdoor seating areas with waterfront views. The Bridge connection is visible from the street level, which will bring attention and interest from any Fort Worth locals and visitors. Visitors to the site will be able to go under the bridge where the landscape blends in with the pathway to the river.

41

A new vision for Heritage Park Plaza Located in Fort Worth Heritage Park Plaza, this site has tremendous potential. With a 10 minute walking distance from Sun Dance Square, this area is new vision to connect Downtown and the Trinity River. This iconic building should stand out while still blending in to the surrounding community. It must create strong connectivity and pedestrian access to the future surrounding community. The topography of the site has a slope of 100 feet from the street level to the water level of the Trinity River. Such high slope allows the project to have wonderful landscape areas that incorporate seating/ gathering spaces for the community to have a relaxing time.

42

YMCA Taking in consideration the condition of the site, with strong regulations regarding the occupation, a compact building seemed to be practical. To fit the program, the strategy is to locate some of the activities over the others. This strategy led to the consideration of a building broken into two sections, connecting the building through bridges. The service rooms, administrative offices, and smaller sports activity wrap around the core of the building. The facades look at each other and the metal mesh allows the facades to have a transparency given the possibility to look through the building from any point or level. The Olympic pool is in the top level of the YMCA, taking advantage of the imposing presence of the Fort Worth Courthouse and the surrounding buildings. Through a sophisticated structural system of steel and concrete supporting the main volume of the pool. Through an extensive amount of time studying the building type and acquiring the proper knowledge to build a successful Athletic Center, we strongly believe this will be a successful addition to the City of Fort Worth.

Youth Hostel The Youth Hostel is design to create a comfortable, functional and modern space. In addition to being a place to relax, refresh and sleep, the hostel can serve as a space for socializing - a kind of a living room with Internet service and free breakfast. These rooms are arranged so that they project out into the waterfront helping to bring in light and prevent the interiors feeling too cramped. The rooms in the south side of the hostel face the Trinity River and the North Side of the hostel faces the Heritage Park Plaza as well as the courthouse and surrounding buildings. A bar is located at the roof top with an enjoyable view of the river and the city of Fort Worth. The hostel building cantilevers out 30’ feet overhanging above the water. The Master Plan includes the realignment of North Main Street and the reinterpretation of Heritage Park Plaza and Trinity River. The programmable and functional areas on the east and west side should successfully bring activity to the site and make a strong connection from Sun Dance Square to Heritage Park Plaza.

Goals & Objectives • Create a unique and vivacious outdoor lifestyle environment for relaxing and entertaining • Create animated outdoor dining opportunities and active pedestrian walkways that respond to local climate

Second level

Basketball Court & Diving Pool The basketball court is located in the ground level with the locker rooms, and administration offices. The basketball court has a wonderful double volume space with the running track wrapping around it’s parameter, allowing the runners and basketball players to see from one level to the other. The athletic activities face the Trinity River which provides a relaxing view while exercising. On the right side of the building is the Diving pool which takes up 3 levels, the pool area gets connected through the squash and racket ball courts.
