SOUND FROM THE ORDER

FEATURING: AINHOA CAMACHO ALEJANDRA MARTÍNEZ CURATING: IVÁN CAPDEVILA

FINDINGS REDUCTIONS HOMOGENIZATIONS DISPLACEMENTS HYBRIDATIONS EDITION

Like Zumthor usually says, every single building has a sound, without knowing exactly why. This is the sound of the empty space, of the materials without friction of people, the breathing of the elements. Everything has a sound, made of its present reality and its future.

In this project Lacaton & Vassal meet Peter Zumthor, in a hybridation of two projects of each one. Taking extreme importance in the fact that we have to preserve the main character of each building, the final result appears as a union of intimacy and permeability, bound movement and indeterminacy; following a straight order of priorities about what to keep and what to leave.

In a first approach to Peter Zumthor´s projects, we highlight the main realities that run the different buildings. First, in the Museum, it is evident the symbolism that remains modernism and the layout of the different galleries around the world.

Second, in the Shelters, the fact that there are a ruins to protect mark the main idea and strategy of the project, then, the collective imaginary of the primitive cabin and the need of enhancing the past atmosphere of the place do the rest.

In order to keep just the essential, the elements that follow the realities which lead each project are in both cases: the element that creates the empty box, the one that shifts and brings light in, and the one that allow the movement of people.

Comparisons/ models plans elevations sections axonometries

In order to do an organized comparison we focus on different things according to the view of the building we are looking at. Therefore, we treat the main ideas with the view of the models; we study the programme while looking at the floor plan; the image, looking at the elevation; the use of light and the programmatic changes in height, when seeing the sections; and the overall image in the axonometries.

Comparisons/ 3 phases Phase 3/ homogenizations Goal: to homogenize all the works, phase 2’s drawings will be transformed into two models per reference. The Shelters for roman ruins will be entered in a perfect cube of 10x10x10m, while the Bregenz Museum will be entered in a perfect cube of 50x50x50m made to 1/100 scale.

Phase 4/ displacements Goal: to produce both formal and programmatic shifts in models made in Phase 3. 1_Formal: An action has been assigned to us: multiply. 2_Programmatic: A programme has been assigned to us: thermal baths.

Phase5/ hybridations Goal: to hybridize the different groups of students’ works. Thus, each group will partner with another party to exchange their work and undertake the necessary modifications so that the others’ models reflect both formal and programmatic conditions they have been working with. We join Lacaton&Vassal couple, hybridating Tour Bois le Prêtre with Shelter for roman ruins and FRAC with Bregenz Museum.

Comparisons/ Models _Bregenz museum

/displacement We introduce the thermal baths placing saunas and baths according with bath routes and heat cycles. Multiplication appears radially from the centre, bringing new spaces and new possibilities for light shifting.

/homogenization We mantain the proportions of the builging while exploting the layers in order to touch all the faces of the imaginary box. Each storey increase exponentially according to the importance of the rooms. Ph 3

Ph 4

/hybridation The main idea that we take from L&V is the external structure that brings extra and public spaces to the existing building. Treating last phases building as the existing one we place metalic stairs outside to allow pass to the roof, which is now a public pool.

/displacement The multiplication is made from the center allowing the appearance of new spaces and new ways to go through the thermal baths in order to make the bath ritual possible. A new footbridge appears to conenct the new boxes, enhancing the changes of light while walking the building.

/homogenization In order to fit the building in a 10x10x10 box, we introduce one pavilion inside the other, reinforcing and making more complex the filtering of light. To avoid the lost of the tunnel effect, the footbridge changes its section along its route.

Ph 3

Ph 4

/hybridation Maintaining the dimensions of the building, we reduce the number of space while open it to the exterior. Again, the attached structure is the one that brings the public space, enclosing the bath space with the metalic frame and creating free saunas with the structure besides the building.

/displacement We multiply creating a patio in the middle of the building as a result of duplicate each element of the building from the centre. An itinerary through the different baths is created while we find a new possibility for lighting. The essence of the image is maintain.

/homogenization All the spaces become larger but the light is maintain. The explosion of the faรงade layers reinforce the elements and the idea of void.

/hybridation Introducing an external gadget in metal, the roof appear as a public extra space, exclusive before. Also it reinforce the image of the building and takes outside the movement of people, another idea we extract from Lacaton & Vassal.

_Shelter for roman ruins /displacement The space before occuped by the ruins is now hollow for the pool. The inside rooms are dressing rooms and saunas. The footbridge help the visitor to follow the bath ritual, first heat and later warm bath.

/homogenization The 10x10x10 is touched in all its faces, in the north-south axe by the footbridge, and in the west-east axe by the pavilion itself. The exterior box is now the route to visit the ruins and the interior is an information point. Ph 3

/hybridation When we meet Lacaton & Vassal, the building turns to the outside becoming more public and open. The private space is just the sauna, the hottest place of the building, from where all the heat of the building comes.

/homogenization The outside image is almost the same as in the existing builing, except for the changes in dimension of each storey and the distance between the faรงade and the walls.

/displacement With the displacements the image does not change, as we understand it as a main reality of the building not to lose.

/hybridation This outside stair is used as a promenade for architecture as well as a way to enhance the image of modernity that was present before plus the image of low cost that Lacaton and Vassal bring to the project. The programme still can use the central space in the same way, but new rooms are added as a consequence of the explosion of the faรงade, what were before spaces for stairs, are now extra indeterminated spaces.

/displacements Multiplicating the main elements of the building we enhance all the realities they carried, such as the imtimate light, the rising movement of people, or the feeling of “empty box”. The thermal baths take place in an organic way, using the new shapes for running the programme, taking into account the movement of heat and the ritual of the typical Turkish baths.

/hybridation The main elements we bring from Lacaton&Vassal are: looking outside, public spcaes, and cheap and indepent structures. We take these realities without loosing the ones of the museum itself, the iconic image, the graduation of intimacy and the freedom of movement. Thus, a new enveloped, open and intimate building is created.

/hybridation Lacaton & Vassal act as the perfect excuse for opening the building towards outside. The main ideas we extract from them are: the attached structure that brings the new and indeterminated space, the layers of intimacy and the open view. Zumthor is all about order, and his sound comes from the empty and lonely building. He likes the building without friction, just the materials and the wind. With Lacaton & Vassal comes the people, even the noise. Altogether, noise and order, a beautiful sound is created, the sound of the order.
