HOW THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS IS REVOLUTIONIZING INCLUSIVITY Presented by Alejandro Escarrá Gil
The "Inclusion Revolution" The Special Olympics is a self-proclaimed inclusion revolution organization promoting inclusivity for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. In addition to providing year-round training, they host numerous activities for millions of participants in over 170 countries. They also spend a significant portion of their time promoting understanding, awareness, and acceptance of people with disabilities. Their mission is to utilize the transformative power of sports to release the spirit of humanity worldwide.
Organization's Mission
The Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a public figure who had the means and determination to make a difference in the world regarding accepting the disabled. While sports is the catalyst for change, the organization has now evolved to include
all areas of life, such as education, healthcare, and career opportunities for the disabled.
Recognizing Inclusivity There are many ways that the Special Olympics revolutionizes inclusivity. One way is by reducing bullying and promoting tolerance for those who are different. The act of inclusion is, by itself, a doorway to open dialog. The fear of the unknown loses its power because students of all levels play and learn side-by-side, getting to know each other as human beings. The similarities, not the differences, are what stand out.
The Concept of Teamwork
Another reason sports breed inclusivity is the concept of teamwork. When teammates work together for a united, common goal, it takes precedence over individuals’ differences. There is also a considerable amount of time spent in each other’s company for practice sessions and games. This leads to social inclusion and camaraderie over both winning and losing.
