The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is an independent organization that is unrelated to any sporting institution. Its job is to provide unbiased, fair assessments of sports-related disputes. They do this through arbitration or mediation and in accordance with procedural rules adapted to the speci c needs of the sport involved. It is the Supreme Court of the sporting world, the highest tribunal for all resolutions of sports-related disputes. During the Olympics, the CAS has a very important role to play. The agency is split into two main divisions, with one concentrating solely on anti-doping (CAS ADD), and the other on Ad Hoc sporting disputes. Throughout the 17 days of the XXIII Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the CAS was called in to keep things in order. In total, 3,149 anti-doping tests were conducted during the Pyeongchang games, making it the most robust anti-doping program ever in the history of the Olympic Winter Games.

This came after previous Russian doping scandals occurred during other Olympic games. It is a well-known fact that methodical doping in the arena of competitive Russian sports has resulted in 47 Olympic medals being stripped away, as well as many other world championships. Russian athletes have had more medals stripped away than any other country. For this reason, the CAS and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have been very diligent about making sure all competitors abide by the rules. Working in a preventative capacity is just as important as being fair arbitrators. This was extremely important in Pyeongchang after the events that occurred in Sochi. In Sochi, the CAS upheld many of the appeals made by Russia, allowing them to be cleared of the doping charges led by the IOC. Out of the 43 athletes charged, 28 were cleared due to insu cient evidence. The IOC was disappointed with these results. There is a nal CAS decision expected by the end of 2020 regarding Russia’s appeal of a four-year Olympic ban. The reason this decision is so anxiously awaited is that it needs to be implemented in time for the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021.
