Why Design? As we enter the age of choices, Product Design is increasingly proving itself to be the quintessential contemporary profession. It’s a coalescence of technical and creative thinking, that addresses the multitude of invisible daily problems in ingenious ways. It’s a creative outlet, but unlike some creative disciplines, the final object’s value is determined democratically and is within reach of many. My main design focus is on design with a cultural understanding and meaningful research, combined with experimental exploration and ideation process.

A particle filter mask should provide protection, comfort and piece of mind. It shouldn’t look like a bad Darth Vador Halloween costume
observation -workers avoid wearing masks, in order to prevent from unnerving office workers -difficult to communicate
-standard dust masks don’t filter out smaller particles and chemicals -heavy duty particle mask overkill, to large, bulky
-heavy airborn dust -no dust mask used by workers -daily exposure
- increased risk of asthma as a result of cleaning chemicals.
-some detergent chemicals shown to cause damage to kidneys & liver
-risks from mold exposure
-mold exposure can cause permanent lung scarring
research “Up to 25 per cent of people exposed to chemicals, including cleaning sprays, at work will go on to develop occupational asthma.” *Hiscott, Graham. “Cleaning sprays are blamed for an asthma epidemic” The Express, October 13, 2007

cleaning links & effects During the ethnographic phase, it was observed the difficulty of getting the camera to focus because of the amount of dust in the air. Despite this danger, none of the workers were wearing any form of protection against the dust. At this point the research shifted away from the equipment, and instead towards the air quality and lung health. While most of the equipment contains obvious usage flaws, the asthma statistics, coupled with the fact that no one used protective gear during the filming, combines to make a problem too significant to ignore. As such, the goal for the design por tion will be a low profile mask that can be used comfor tably on a daily basis by a cleaner.

Current masks cover the entire face, making the user anonymous. At the same time it makes that same person more intimidating for those around them, especially for those not using facial protection themselves. Thus, humanizing the user again by making him or her visible, will eliminate the ‘Dar th Vador’ effect. Rhino3D was used to create planar drapes, that were draped over a head, simplified and abstracted, creating a more workable form. Using the Rhino3D data, a CNC version of six of the models was made. From this, six tests were created and fur ther tested.

In the design, a personality window in front was added, to visually expose more of the user’s face. Also, less hard edge geometry was used unlike most respirators that give them a industrial aesthetic, also the filtration has been worked into the geometry, to make it stand out less. The Final Design is meant as an in between, more protection then a dust mask but not a full fledged intimidating industrial par ticle mask.

If you don’t drink a whole kettle of tea, then why are you still heating up a whole kettle of water?
design intent
Due to the high volume of current electric tea kettles, you either waist time and energy heating up 6 cups of unused water, or unused space. Also, because of the open nature of the design, at the later heating stage steam escapes from the top. What is needed is a way to heat up water in small quantities, and in a closed cycle, as well as enhancing the tea making process
ideation
-small desk footprint -single button operation -closed thermal cycle
operation
Remove cover from the Brew Spout, and pour water from the cup to be used.
Replace cover to the Brew Spout, and place the empty cup on top of the cover.
When the heating coils warm up, it will boil the water, and steam will travel up the spout. Condensation with build up on top, and pour out into the cup.

Sliding up and down is the primary gesture, used to adjust the volume. Once the finger is removed, the interface fades out, returning to the invisible state.

Can a trailer and a bike, replace a trailer and a diesel truck?
observation
Christy Webber, the sponsor of the group project was interested in developing a bike trailer to carry all the needed daily equipment to reduce the company’s footprint, and meet the demand of its customers for a more environmentally sustainable and efficient lawn care alternative. This bike trailer would be used as a replacement for the current truck trailer.
ideation
full scale test
The major issues were the number of tools, the varying shapes, and the theft risk, which was already a problem for the company.
operation
After fur ther sketch development, and scale model tests with foam-core a final design was reached. This used a hybrid of lockable closed compar tments, rails with strap anchor points, and locking arms.

The final design had to walk the line of being functional, visually distinctive, and since it would be produced in small limited runs, easy to produce. As such exotic shapes hard to produce were avoided. Thus, a large por tion of the exterior would be produced from rolled sheet-metal.

close-up The final trailer avoids specific compar tments for specific tools. Depending on the job to be done, not all workers will take the same tools every day. Thus, the design tries to be a base upon which the worker has the freedom to decide how to use it. This is done by giving the user options for how to attach tools as well as having many anchor points for cables to tie down oddly shaped arrangements.

Rather then starting with the structural and then putting the human part on top, why not move the structural to the outside and the interaction to the inside.
inspiration
Form inspiration came from mid-century modern metal tubing chairs such as those done by Le Corbusie and Marcel Breuer, especially the straight line symmetry and use of negative space in the understructure of the chair.
This was coupled with furniture that used curved plywood to create forms what flow into one another organically.
