Getting Started Coloring and Yarn Choices Have fun playing and experimenting with color! Use 2 colors or as many as you like and color your design! Choose a nice fingering weight yarn. Non superwash yarns tend to have better definition when knitting colorwork. Main color approx 160 yds/ 148 m Contrast color(s) approx 90 yds/ 84m Yarns used: Tuku Wool Fingering, Little Grey Sheep Stein Fine Wool, Jamieson & Smith 2 ply Jumper Weight, Barrett Wool Co Home Fingering Woolmint Symphony
Size of Mitten (after blocking): 10.5” tall x 4” wide 26.5 cm x 10 cm Needles: US 1/ 2.25mm for cast on and rib cuffs US 2 / 2.5mm for colorwork and thumb Gauge of colorwork section: 2”x 2”= 15 sts x 15 rows 5cm x 5 cm = 15 sts x 15 rows
The gauge of your knitting will affect the size of your mittens. If you want to make it smaller or larger you can play with your gauge. Note that it is best to swatch in the round with your colorwork pattern to get the most accurate gauge measurment.

Each mitten chart shows one half of the mitten. As both sides of the mitten are the same you will repeat the chart twice every round. Your knitting will look like the graphic below of two charts put together. If you feel adventurous, you can pick a different design for the front and back as the number of stitches are the same.

Start Knitting With smaller needles, cast on 62 stitches and join in the round. Begin a p1,k1 rib. Continue ribbing for as long as selected chart states. Switch to larger needles when beginning colorwork section of mittens.
Provisional for thumb. The thumb is marked by the following row of symbols: stitches for left thumb provisional stitches for right thumb provisional With scrap yarn knit the 12 stitches marked on the chart corresponding to the mitten you are working on, left (L) or right (R). Then transfer the stitches knit with the scrap yarn from the right needle back to the left needle and knit the stitches in scrap yarn again following the chart colorwork pattern. Continue to follow chart pattern.
Top shaping The top of the mitten is created by decreases on each side of each half of the mitten. You will decrease 4 stitches each decrease round. The decreases continue until there are a total of 6 stitches remaining, 3 sts for the front and back of the mitten. Graft the 3 front stitches and 3 back stitches together using Kitchner Stitch method.

Knitting Thumbs Carefully pull out scrap yarn and transfer live stitches to needles. You should have a total of 24 stitches. Begin knitting thumb by picking up and knitting a stitch between the upper 12 sts and lower 12 sts from the provisional, then knit 12 sts, pick up and knit a stitch, knit 12 sts (26 sts). On the following round, decrease a stitch where you picked up a stitch on the previous round by k2tog twice (24 sts). Follow chart for thumb knitting 18 rounds to tip shaping. You can add more rounds to your thumb to lengthen your thumb if desired. Tip shaping follows the same decreases as mitten tip shaping. Ending with a total of 4 stitches. Divide stitches into a front 2 stitches and back 2 stitches and graft together using Kitchner stitch.

create left and right leaning braids through twisting right side floats Left leaning: Round 1: Bring both yarns to the front and purl all sts, alternating colors like chart. When purling, bring working yarn OVER the other colored yarn (creating twisting floats on right side). Round 2: Keep both yarns to the front and purl each stitch in the color it presents itself. When purling, bring working yarn UNDER the other colored yarn. Right leaning: Round 1: Bring both yarns to the front and purl all sts, alternating colors like chart. When purling, bring working yarn UNDER the other colored yarn. (creating twisting floats on right side) Round 2: Keep both yarns to the front and purl each stitch in the color it presents itself.
