UNDOING URBANISM NORTHEN QUARTER PROPOSAL The Northern Quarter Regeneration Proposal has been prepared by MA Architecture and Urbanism students - 84 internationally diverse postgraduate students studying at Manchester School of Architecture. Following a introduction to the city, it was identified that the Northern Quarter having had a successful period of growth and investment was beginning to lose its individual personality notably via; - A number of demolitions of abandoned derelict buildings - Planning applications submitted for new buildings not in keeping with the area’s architectural form. - Significant increase in the area’s ‘play’ culture without the continued balance of economic and residential sectors. The Northern Quarter Regeneration Proposal sets out how MA Architecture and Urbanism students suggest the future of the Northern Quarter should develop providing innovative transport and green space solutions all focussing on maintaining and enhancing the diversity and community sense of the area.

STEVENSON SQUARE

Our side concept is to make the streets more open for society and artistic exhibitions. The Thomas street is the link to the future park view and the way to the Stevenson Square. The proposal is showing the adaptable design that can be changed and re-used in different formats. The side panels can be used by graffiti artists which will form free art exhibitions that support local designers. The semi open space provide space for market areas, exhibitions and small concert spaces to support local communities and give life to Stevenson Square. In addition the square are is a heart of the new communication system but also a place for local people to enjoy the local food and products.

Initial design idea for the re development of the existing Stevenson Square area.

We are going to have an exhibition at Fred Aldous shop to ingage with the public but also show how Stevenson square can be re-designed to increase social interaction and gain more for the NQ community.

THOMAS STREET Thomas Street proposal is formed to change the current road usage and pedestrianise the area. One benefits of this will be a shop and restaurant will expand to the pathway giving the costumers space to sit outside or for business/marketing activities. The proposal design is showing the layers of greenery on the building facade. The most important factor is to keep the existing building facade inside the new design so people can explore the Northen Quarter vibe. Also provide the economical potential and also give the first floor for a free workshop , open to the public.

POCKET PARKS The pocket park proposals were the idea to adapt spaces between the buildings. Re-use the spaces for the community usage as well as potential small businesses such as food kiosks. The space will also provide green areas. I.e small spaces between buildings which cant be adapted as parking spaces , and doesn’t block the entrances or exits to the buildings can be changes to green areas. This will provide the residents with green spaces as well as lunch break spaces for people that work around Northern Quarter.

PORT STREET

NP Centre space is a modern embodiment of the Northern Quarter spirit. It is a multifunctional landmark which is both beneficial for NQ residents and local businesses. The blend of outdoor and indoor adds an additional layer to the flexibility of the space, which can be used for everyday relaxation, sport or as an event place.

ROOF GARDENS

NORTHEN QUARTER FORUM COLLABORATION

RED OR DEAD COLLABORATION Brief given by the Red or Dead company was broaden company appeal while retaining its quirky ethos.I have been asked to design a showroom/store shop which was situated within a shop/ retail centre. The brief highlighted footwear, accessories and old design clothing. Also to include promotional product such as furniture and packaging to promote brand images as well as having a modern cheque to boost it presence in the store.

MAJOR PROJECT To create a clinical space which will combine both, physical and psychological areas for people with and without heart diseases. This space will provide information for people to avoid the consequences of bad dieting and stress. Multi-floored building is representing the variety of ages (18-45) in patients as well as costumers. This project is based on my personal experiences in existing medical spaces. As a protagonist, I have wrote the emotional involvements inside medical practices across Manchester. This qualitative data has helped me to developed emotional attraction to the project which influenced my design process.

MIF FESTIVAL This university project involve developing ideas and concepts with regards to making artefacts and elements at object, human and architectural scale; urban way; narrative and branding, all for festival square (formerly Albert square). Festival square is the social hub of the Manchester international festival and is home to several destinations which provide food, entertainment and a meeting point during the festival. The BBC also uses this location to live broadcast from so as well as working with the team from MIF, oh ok and practise architects. Students whose practise is concerned with, but not necessarily exclusive to, 3 dimensional design, interior design, architecture, sculpture and graphic design, may have this brief appropriate to their existing skills, with the potential for knowledge development within a challenging and stimulating context.

Design a family of furniture (view them in character but from the same dna) suitable for use in the hospitality areas of festival square. The locations include the pavilion, the glass house, the barns and outdoor seating, which needs requirements.

PHOTOGRAPHY In my a level course I created photographs of graffiti artists. My work was inspired by Arron Siskind pieces which were my muses. Graffiti show modern art in it usage.Their selection of colours represent young people’s frustration and youth spirit. The use of lines links with their usage of typography.I have wrote essay in relation to how and why youth write their initials or spontaneous sentences on walls. This is all linked to social class and their interactions with their favourite or hated places in the city.
