COME TOGETHER Design of a collaborative model for stakeholders based on research on Lövgärdet’s square invisible context and participatory approach
ongoing MASTER THESIS 2020 What knowledge does an architect should have before he starts to design? Is it enough what we see? How the invisible context influence this what is visible? Through this master thesis, I want to investigate a hidden cause of the current situation of Lövgärdet’s square, listed as one of particularly exposed area (Sw. Särskilt utsatt område) according to Police report. Through the participatory process with stakeholders, I will define the current state of the area and design a collaborative model for stakeholders, which will be a starting point for a sustainable change in the region, a base which will create an anchor for cooperation in the area.

‘’Planner do not work on a neutral stage, an ideally liberal setting in which all affected interests have choice; they work within political institutions, on political issues, on problems whose most basic technical components (say, a population projection) may be celebrated by some, contested by others. Any account of planning must face these political realities”. Forester, J. (1989). Planning in the face of power. United States: University of California Press
It is time to rethink who we are as architects. We tend to look at the visible context and design only in the visual plane. Time to open our eyes for what is invisible. It’s time to limit our selfish motives and look at our work as a mission. We don’t design in a vacuum. We cannot pretend that our world is an idyllic context, which is just and free from power relations. We are not only to demonstrate our design capabilities, but to meet the needs of society, to improve the quality of lives. We need to stand as a mediator in an urban context, be conscious about invisible just as well as we are aware of what is visible. We need to know where we work, why we work and for whom. We need to create an understanding of both context layers and the power relations before we start to design.

ONE LÖVGÄRDET (The summer space project) Role: Team and project coordinator WORK GROUP PROJECT 2019 In connection with the need for a better connection of the northern and southern parts of the Gothenburg, city plan to build a cable car that will be an additional mean of transport over the Gota älv river. The planned cable car has 3 stops on the Hisingen side (Lindholmen, Västra Ramberget, and Wiselgrensplatsen) and one stop on cities southern side - Järntorget. The project deals with giving continuity to the newly created street and integrating it with the existing structure. As in the masterplan, the goal is to introduce new values with respect to the existing valuable elements.
WORK CHARACTERISTICS The summer space team: 4 master students + 8 Angaredsgymnasiet students + 3 people from First to Know Scandinavium AB Collaboration: Poseidon Bostads AB, Framtiden AB, Lövgärdeskolan, Victoria Park, Goteborg energi, Goteborg stad Through participatory approach and collaboration with local stakeholders we examined the area and presented conclusions which also lead to design proposals and guidelines. The project’s aim was not only to create solutions, but also enrich region by socially inclusive process, which was done in the region, not only for the region.
CHALLENGES Bad image
Newspapers titles are always negative Information which you find in the internet is not up to date
Seperation of the area 70’s - area was build 80’s - separation - upper and lower Lövgärdet 90’s - competition made by Poseidon to promote their side placing the sign on the bridge
PROBLEM DESCRITPTION Problem descrition described through initial phase of The Summer Space project. The data was collected through participatory approach using methods such as interviews, questionairs, brain-storms. In the data-collecting process were included stakeholders and society, which points of view were confronted and gathered together in the graphic below.
Lack of good communication Maps in the area are different It is hard to localise yourself in the area Maps and signs are mainly promoting companies, not region Existing communication is not promoting area
Lack of knowledge Locals don’t know what is happening in the area Locals don’t know what is in their area
GOALS
To create feeling of one community, to show qualities for different age groups, for tourists and locals by making a one image of Lövgärdet. Give an identity to the region.
METHODOLOGY
Inspirations Mapping Walking around area and collecting valuable places by placing them on the map. Next, connecting these places in thematic paths, which are addressing different people and activities Questionnaires Going out to the people to ask their opinions and intelligibility of proposed signs and symbols Trying to overcome a barrier of language Study trips Visits eg in Botaniska to find out more about visual communication of touristic places
Example of logo of other area in Angared district.
STRATEGY improving inside image is a first step to improve also the outside image
o promote area we need to create a landmark which will be base for area’s identity
Workshops testing the idea of paths - recreating the idea in scale of exhibition hall - observing how people use it showing our propositions of logo and ask for opinions and give a space for other ideas
PROJECT THREE STEPS STRATEGY TO IMPROVE IMAGE OF LÖVGÄRDET STEP I : MAP WITH PATHS AND LOGO
STEP II : UNIFYING SIGNS AND INFORMATION BOARDS
We created a map which unify the symbols of the place for all the area. This can be a first step of integrating area.
Information boards of all housing companies should have the same layout.
Creation of one common logo for whole the area.
On the buildings near the paths should be placed signs, which will help to navigate around the area.
STEP III : A DEVELOPED INFRASTRUCTURE Painted paths - transfering paths to reality Children paths - added element of fun and games Educational paths - adding element of information and education / awareness Infrastructure as benches, tables, bins etc. in colour of paths.
THE CABLE CAR PROJECT THREE STOPS - ONE STREET ACADEMIC INDIVIDUAL PROJECT 2019 In connection with the need for a better connection of the northern and southern parts of the Gothenburg, city plan to build a cable car that will be an additional mean of transport over the Gota älv river.
CHALLENGES Cable car stations, towers and lines have certain regulations, which limits building possibilities in the area. Landfrom: big land height differences, which afftects possibilities of development and also is impeding the creation of a single continious street conencting these three stations Irregular builded area and public space: preceived public space is not reagular and there is visible mix of uses and dispersion of buildings (no one street frontage, no active frontages, often one side of street is green)
GOALS Solve the connections: connect northern area with souther through making new street and overcome barrier of highway and trainway; make movement hierarchy (pedestrians, bicycles, cars, public transport) Create green connections: connecting public space to green area of Keillers Park; creating green street from Wieselgrensplatsen to Lindholmen Create regular public space: regulation of public space, providing space for services, making active frontages ating regulated street sections
PROJECT AIM: A CONTINUOUS STREET WITH 4 QUALITIES

There are several rows, each one representing a different category such as sleeping, eating, living etc. On every cube there are two options placed on opposite sides so stakeholders have to choose the one they find most important

BECHELOR THESIS PROJECT 2018
The aim of the project was to create a housing estate that would create friendly conditions for the development of community relations and provide a place for intergenerational integration as well as comfortable living conditions for the elderly. The main intention was to draw attention to the problem of an aging society and the lack of community connections in new housing estates. The detailed study concerns a residential building located in the main area of the housing estate.
