The main topic was inspired by “Il Teatro del Mondo” by Aldo Rossi. Our task was to think about public building in relation to public space.
10 selected students from Eindhoven Technical University took part in the spring academy where we worked on an urban design assignment. How to integrate Dortmund’s Newtown into the Oldtown’s urban fabric? That was the main question.
Headed by architects Ivana Bendová and Jan Benda, who are Czech architects having office in Shanghai. Workshop was focused on large scale projects in different cultural environment and different thinking during proposal process.
Headed by Mjölk Architects focused on revitalization of rural public space in Srbsko.

Ir. Wouter Hilhorst Subject Letter of recommendation for
Aleš Moravec
To whom it may concern
Dear Madam/Sir, This letter is a recommendation for Aleš Moravec. Aleš Moravec is currently working on his thesis project at the Department of the Built Environment, Eindhoven University of Technology, for which I am one of his supervisors. I have had the pleasure to supervise Aleš in two previous architectural design projects in the Master program, in academic year 2016-2017. The first was ‘Tectonic Exercises’, concentrating on how the way of making can be used for architectural expression, the second ‘La Città Ideale’, about the architecture of urban buildings. Knowing Aleš’ qualities I have subsequently asked him to be a student-assistant at the first first-year design project in the bachelor program, BAU Studio 1, which I am coordinating. My position is university lecturer at the chair of Rational Architecture, which is led by professor Dipl.-Ing. C. Rapp, at Eindhoven University of Technology, Department of the Built Environment. I have been lecturing since 2010, at Delft University of Technology, Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design and Eindhoven University of Technology, besides having my own architectural practice. I am supervising bachelor as well as master students, and I am part of the supervising team for thesis projects of the master program. As I have come to know Aleš, three traits stand out for me. For first, Aleš is an excellent draftsman. His drawings, and models, have a very precise, sensitive and atmospheric quality. This stands for something bigger: it shows that in designing he has a very good feeling for proportion, detail and material. Second, Aleš is a serious and hard worker and is pro-active in his work. He always comes prepared, takes comments to heart, processes them and takes them steps further. Thirdly, and I think the two previous points imply this, Aleš has an intrinsic and genuine interest in architecture and urbanism, fueled by his desire to design and make things. This intrinsic motivation permeates all his work.

This intrinsic motivation also comes in to play in collaborations with others. In the project ‘La Città Ideale’ an explicit part of the assignment was to collaborate in order to arrive at a coherence between all the individual designs in the studio. Aleš played an important part in the group collaboration. He also collaborated closely with his direct neighbor in the group design, much more than most other students. As a student-assistant for the first-year design project Aleš supervised first-year bachelor students in their design work, collaborating with Renato Kindt, design lecturer at our department. Both supervising and collaborating went very well. I am very happy to have Aleš Moravec as a student and student-assistant and I am convinced of his qualities in the field of architecture, both of the quality of his work as of his work attitude. I would heartily recommend him as a colleague. As a matter of course, I am willing to answer questions or give more information. Yours faithfully,
ir. Wouter Hilhorst
