AGI’s Mobile Soup Kitchen Helping the Community in Brooklyn, New York noemi@alephgroupinc.com
Everyone has a right to food and water, but not everyone has the same amount of privilege in having both of these every day necessities. This could be consequential to all ages, however, children are at risk of experiencing setbacks in child development. According to Feeding America, “Research shows an association between food insecurity and delayed development in young children; risk of chronic illnesses like asthma and anemia; and behavioral problems like hyperactivity, anxiety and aggression in school-age children. Hunger in America does not apply just to those in impoverished communities. In fact, unemployment has
higher statistics for being the reason of food insecurity as well as families that live above the average of impoverished. So what can your clinic or organization therefore do in order to lower this possibility of food insecurity? The possibilities are endless. AGI helps your programs come to life with what we know best— providing locations for the community to give and to receive.
According to North Brooklyn Angels, “New York City’s poverty rate is approximately 48% above the federal poverty rate, and nearly 30% above the New York State poverty rate,” which is one of the many reasons they were inspired to take initiative within their community. Although this organization is dedicated to focusing on just Brooklyn, hunger and food insecurity occurs around the world. According to World Hunger, “The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about 795 million people of the 7.3 billion people in the world, or one in nine, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2014-2016.” Therefore the North Brooklyn Angels organization is taking matters into their own hands, and with the help of AGI, has created a mobile soup kitchen.
The organization thrives on a simple goal—neighbors helping neighbors. Their website states, “Our main goal is to provide ample opportunity for neighbors to volunteer and help their neighbors. We will start by serving meals, but we have a long list of creative ideas for ways for us to join together and support our community. In addition, we are using our organizing skills to create a coalition of community groups, houses of worship, and local businesses that all want to work collectively to address the issue in North Brooklyn.” In other words, this organization wishes to create an impact within the community by offering a space where all are welcomed and help one another out. By creating a mobile soup kitchen, this organization is already taking the first steps to bring awareness to food insecurity, as well as make a lasting impact within New York.
Mobile soup kitchens are a great way to help reduce hunger not just in the U.S. but around the world. By serving to the community, we’re creating an impact that will not only change the chances of food insecurity, but we’re setting examples for future generations within the communities. By helping organizations such as North Brooklyn Angels, or providing mobile clinics to other communities, we’re emphasizing that affordable and accessible healthcare should be available to all communities by working together with our peers.
