PAPER MADE WITH CANE WASTE REVOLUTIONIZES AGRIBUSINESS IN COLOMBIA By: Sebastian Jimenez Colombian chemist and inventor Jorge Humberto Borrero has revolutionized the paper industry through a novel process that allows the production of high strength cellulose fiber from sugar cane residues.

Borrero, owner of the company Fibras Ecológicas, has achieved for its initiative, called SSOHE, a patent in Colombia, whose purpose is to protect the environment, reduce pollution and stop the indiscriminate cutting of trees. "At the University of the Valle we find seven promising materials, including the sugar cane leaf, to obtain paper of better quality than the one given by eucalyptus or pine," he told Colombia.inn, an agency operated by Efe, A researcher from Cali, in southwestern Colombia.

VIVE One of the main differences of the development of Borrero with respect to other similar ones that are in the market is that it uses the leaf and not the bagasse (woody residue) of the sugar cane. On the other hand, according to the researcher, the amounts of caustic soda and sulfur derivatives used in other paper manufacturers are highly harmful to health and the environment.

Morever, he added, "only a small amount of 'Moore salt' is required, which is neutral and nontoxic, so the waste generated can be used as fertilizer for planting." His first commercial success is that the Swedish company SCA has already bought the idea. In the Valle del Cauca alone, there are some 225, 000 hectares of cane with which sugar or bioethanol is made, and in the rest of the national territory there are another 350,000 hectares. We have "enough raw material to get not only the role of Colombia but that of all South America," he said. ALL RIGHTS RESERVEDº

SPRING, THE FIRST COLOMBIAN SOLAR VEHICLE. By: Alexander Diaz

The EAFIT University with the support of the EPM foundation, created a solar car called Primavera. Primavera is the first solar car made in Colombia. For two years students and teachers of the university worked for the finalization of the car.The solar car has the capacity of go through 100 kms for hour. The construction of car cost 1.800 million Colombian pesos. Primavera has a weight of 350 kilos, moreover, the solar car has two engines of high efficiency located on the rear wheels, the two engines are recharged with a solar panel.

The general manager of EPM, said that the creation of the solar car is a means for "producing, storing and making efficient use of the energy in its cleanest expression", as well, said that the creation of the solar car "reflects the capabilities of Colombians".

Moreover, the solar car "Primavera" is an example of why Medellin was chosen as the most innovative city in the world. Is necessary the search of new alternativities for the conservation of the environment, the solar car is a new alternative by implementation of the solar energy for his operation. The fabrication of the first solar car in the country, allows to think that the mobility of the future is closer then we think.

DEVICE FOR QUADRIPLEGIC PERSONS By: Yermer Mosquera

Pupil follower is a device made by the mechanical engineer Daniel Cuartas, for help to persons that do not have mobility in the limbs. With this device, the persons can control all the basic functions of the room with the eyes, for example: open and close the windows, change the channel on the TV, accommodate the bed, among many other functions. This device consists of several parts. In the first place, it has a camera prepared for artificial vision, located on a mount.

Associated with it, a software that follows the pupil and generates in a screen a menu where the user observes buttons with the actions that he can perform. Moreover, it is a glass that has a camera conditioned for that the wavelength not affect the eyes. For last, there is a computer or mobile device that is responsible of analyze to the image that the coming of the camera and send orders, depending on the position of the eye, to a controller that transmits them to electronic peripherals, for example, a mechanical bed or television. The software is based on modules that are added to the interface as needed. Well now, this invention is very important for the life of many persons with this problem, not only in physical health, if not, also in mental health, because will help them to have more autonomy in its lives. And will allow them to feel useful persons. In the year 2013, Daniel got the recognition as Innovator of Colombia under the age of 35 for this excellent job.

SOLAR CHARGER FOR MOBILE PHONE. By: Alexander Diaz

In the national university of Colombia, the students of the faculty of electronic engineering ubicate in Manizales, created a portable charger that works with sunlight. This electronic device it can be used in any mobile device, because, the components used not have any element that can damage it. The solar portable charger is composed for solar cells that are in charge of create the necessary volts for be used on the mobile devices. the devices are moreover very small and can be carried with ease by the people that used it.

Currently many people used these is electronic device and they are satisfied with the product for their comfort, creativity and novelty. The creators as well are satisfied for the new product. One of the creators of the solar portable charger, affirms that they had the idea after that they observed the device mobile are downloaded quickly and several occasions the users do not have a charger with they, moreover, other of the creators as well affirm that the solar portable charger allows users not to spend money buying other mobile chargers, the people with the solar portable charger realize that make a single investment. This new invention, is a contribution to the improvement of the environment and the construction of a society every day cleaner.

ROBOT CAPABLE OF SNIFFING AND DESTROYING ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES By: Sebastian Jimenez

The interest in saving lives of soldiers and thousands of civilians victims of the Colombian conflict and contributing to the construction of a Colombia in Peace was what led to the creation of the first prototype of this robot, consisting of an electronic nose and a dron Aerialterrestrial, capable of traveling hundreds of kilometers, monitored by a system on land that allows marking a work route. Luisa Fernanda Ruiz, a master's degree student in Telecommunications Engineering and Edwin Alfonso Arenas, a student of Electronic Engineering at the Industrial University of Santander along with Ferney López and Rafael Vides, two entrepreneurs and experts in robotics, from the city of Apartado, Antioquia and the contribution of the ICT Center managed to make this great invention for the development of the country and the world as well. They united knowledge and dedication to create the first airborne and land robot capable of sniffing and destroying antipersonnel mines, baptized “Bloodhound” or in spanish “Sabueso volador antiminas”.

"We feel we have a commitment to our country; Not only with the military who daily expose their lives, but also with the peasants who no longer want to cross their fields for fear of being hit by a mine. Also with the animals, that although we do not see them in newspapers also have been victims of this problematic", explained Luisa Fernanda. The dron has the ability to adapt to the weather conditions and thus fly over the grounds where it is presumed the mines can be located. This robot can also transport smallscale explosives used as a counter load to destroy the mines.
