05 FERENC PUSKAS, THE PEOPLE’S STADIUM
REPURPOSING ABANDONED SPORT VENUES The abandoned stadiums and structures after an the Olympic Games and World Cup event are a problem that many hosting cities and countries have to face. After the flourish months before and during the event, the city has to think how to keep all the newly built structures alive and with a valid purpose pertinent to the community. Many times, unfortunately, the new structures accommodate events and sports that are not popular in the city and therefore they end up being abandoned and fall into decay. We often do not take this problem in consideration. We watch the event, enjoy it, and almost forget about what happens afterwards. There are also problems during the construction of these new buildings, even though they bring new jobs and better infrastructures, many citizens of the hosting countries often complain about the ways money is spent. This is usually the case if the country in consideration has a fairly poor population (for example, the last World Cup in Brazil, 2014). We then need to think a better way on how to design structures that could serve the community before, during and after the event. Perhaps the purpose of the new structure could be totally changed after the event to better suit the people living in the context area.

The stadium, which is all-seater, has a capacity of 38,652, though its original capacity exceeded 100,000 The first plan of a national stadium were drafted as early as 1896 when there were chances that Budapest would host the first modern Olympic Games. In 1911 Budapest received the right to organise the 1920 Olympics but due to the First World War Budapest could not hold the Olympic Games.
