The project proposal was based on a deep analysis of Borgo di Craco, a magnificent heritage site that conceal an inherent challenge, which is not only about restore/regenerate the fabric of the city and its Architecture, but to come across the deeper sense that relate the ruins with its original essence. Working on such a complex fabric meant working not so much with streets and buildings but with the relation their memory. Lovely ruins, which have been completely modified by the time and abandonment, must be protected. Like a ghost, like a skeleton, the memory of the city of Craco has become something else: a fragile “Urban body, inside which new structures appeared configuring a new composition. The ancient supporting structures that nowadays overlap the rubble had the task of preserving and maintaining what remained of its original structure. From the reinterpretation these characteristic elements the project aims to make up and reconfigure the Urban and Architectural textile of the entire Borgo becoming a compositional element. Therefore in a dense series of metal pillars that holds the entire intervention, making the language of the existing scaffoldings themself an architectural ruin. Since in its precariousness and in its fragility the village of Craco has found in these elements its new backbone, not only of the Architecture that remains.

Raising a series punctual iron structures, the sense of rubble characterizes the architectural intervention. Starting from the assumption that the ruins express a strong emotional charge because what remains is not the complete design of the Architecture, but the essentiality of the thought, the naked structure. The aim of the intervention is not to complete redesign a volume or finishing what is left today, but understand the echoes it produces, reproducing the features and the precariousness that the structures are still expressing. The proposal doesn’t want to imitate what is the past but be in turn unfinished. The very essence of the architectural form. Consistent with this idea, the project proposal is focused on the most demolished area, precisely because in this new configuration the contour lines of the soil trends are confused with the sum of the rubble. Accordingly, on these rubble, the entire body of the building is set up by supporting the ruins by means of metal elements that embrace both the pre-existence and the new volumes that lean and raise on them. In the first instance the structure denounced as a skeleton and support, while the various bivouacs and rooms are distributed throughout the village, taking the same architectural language and inserting in the the existing buildings and urban voids characterized drowned from the rubble. The project proposal wants to take charge of the deeper essence of the rubble, and above all it analyzes the emotional charge of the ruin, defining a new structure which is in turn an unfinished; the essence of the structure that becomes the skeleton of a ghost which is the city of Craco.
