Graduates prepare for in-person ceremony after year of pandemic challenges NICOLE BOYD copy editor
Spring 2021 commencement will be held in-person after last year’s ceremony was held virtually due to COVID-19. However, the graduates’ past year was still influenced by the pandemic. Bailey Johnston, speaker for the School of Nursing, said this past semester was her hardest because she had to balance schoolwork, clinical work Monday through Thursday and working in the ICU, usually with COVID-19 patients, at least once a week. “Work was very stressful … typically, most of the patients I took care of were on a ventilator, and so it was just a very, very stressful 12 hours. And then to come home, regroup and do school the next day was mentally taxing for sure,” Johnston said. Conner McClain, speaker for the School of Pharmacy, said he was able to be actively involved in the COVID-19 vaccination process by administering vaccines as a pharmacy student. “It made me appreciate community pharmacy so much, because they just juggle so much — but at the same
time, it looks like a well-oiled machine. I couldn’t think of a better place to help people get vaccinated. They’re just so used to it, these pharmacists are,” McClain said. Samuel Childerson, speaker for the School of Business, said the pandemic allowed him to study a real crisis in his meta-analysis for his URCA research, titled “Leadership in a Crisis.” “We were focused on seeing first if there were differences in the way men and women hospital leaders lead, actually just health care leaders in general, and then see if there are these differences, if these differences [are] inherent. Women leaders, it actually placed them in a better position to be leaders during a crisis, and to be better leaders during a crisis as well,” Childerson said. While some worried it wouldn’t happen, this year’s commencement speakers will get to speak at an in-person ceremony. Peter Romero, speaker for the School of Health, Education and Human Behavior, said while he thinks it’s important that a virtual option is offered for those with health issues, he thinks it’s a great thing to have an in-person commence-
ment. “It feels pretty great that at least we’re having it in-person, and the reason why I say [this] has to do with my parents. They’re immigrants and I’m firstgeneration. I’m not a big celebration kind of person or a big ceremony type of person, but I know that this meant a lot to my parents, and it does mean a lot to me because I’m the first generation to go through college,” Romero said. Kenzie Holzinger, speaker for the College of Arts and Sciences, said she is excited to have an in-person commencement, and her speech will focus on graduation not being an end goal. “Our time at SIUE is a goal, but it’s not an end goal. It’s giving us these tools that we’re able to have to now move forward in society with cause, with more effect, to be able to be helpful members in our community now that we’ve learned,” Holzinger said. Leanne Montgomery, speaker for the School of Engineering, said she wants to talk about failure in her speech, as she went back to school to study engineering after she found she was unhappy teaching art history. She now plans to
work for NASA in thermal engineering. “I know that [graduation] is a big success, but I want to talk about how important failure is. I know in my life, failure — and more importantly, the fear of failure — has stopped me from doing a lot of things, even things that I’m coming back to now and it’s like, ‘Boy, I wish I’d done this 20 years ago.’ I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do it. I just want to encourage people to not limit yourself by failure, because it’s a good thing,” Montgomery said. Childerson said in his speech, he will talk about how his class has fought through adversity for an entire year during the pandemic “Now we’re entering this next stage of adversity whether going on to grad school … whether going on to our future careers, and so with that, it’s interesting that now we’ve dealt with all this adversity and now we have to go into this new world of adversity at this point,” Childerson said. “But also, we’re uniquely prepared as new graduates … to progress into this new world and change it.” Commencement schedules can be found on SIUE’s website.

Women’s basketball player bridges student athleticism, activism DALTON BROWN copy editor
On and off the basketball court, senior guard/forward Zaria Whitlock has made an impact on those around her. Whitlock’s dedication to student athleticism and advocacy has earned her the respect of teammates and internship managers alike. Junior shooting guard Mikala Hall said Whitlock takes a reserved type of initiative on the court. “Zaria is a leader. She won’t say a lot at a time, but she’s very observant and she’ll talk when she needs to,” Hall said. “As time progresses, if she sees that someone’s making mistakes, she’ll be able to correct you — but she’ll make sure she’s correcting you in the right way … so she makes sure she chooses her words wisely.” This sense of leadership extends off the court as well; Whitlock marched in and spoke at the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Black Lives Matter march in October 2020. She said junior guard Mikia Keith asked her to speak at the march, and
she used the opportunity to highlight the reality of social progress — or lack thereof — in the United States. “[The speech] was just mainly talking about the fact that, as a country, we’ve kind of wanted to hide from the fact that we are not at all where we thought we were as far as social progress goes,” Whitlock said. “And I think in 2020, despite all of the tragedies and atrocities that have happened, especially in the Black community … it has really shown us where we are as a country, and I think we had the wool pulled over our eyes for a very long time.” Hall said she appreciates Whitlock’s passion for social justice and education. “She is very vocal about what she cares about,” Hall said. “She was able to teach other people about what was going on in our community, and not be afraid to speak out and teach others … and even teach me. There’s some things I didn’t know about my own history, but she was able to just inform me and let me know.” During a team-building exercise last fall, Whitlock met Anya Covington, the
founder and manager of human2human, an organization which Covington says aims to eliminate the “-isms” that divide us as people — such as racism and sexism. As a philosophy and sociology double-major, Whitlock said she knew she needed a spring internship for graduation and had finally found the right organization for her; Covington said Whitlock made quite an impression on her as well. “It was interesting, because I think she missed the first hour of our first session, but once she came in, it was just like a light,” Covington said. “The way she’s able to articulate her ideas and her experiences … she’s a very thoughtful person, so when she speaks, it’s well thought out — and she has a strong opinion, but I truly believe it’s based on merit.” Covington said human2human’s primary focus is their diversity, equity and inclusion trainings, and the organization is building a research platform with credible information, which was part of Whitlock’s see WHITLOCK on page 12

Graduate student’s cancer battle inspires research BRANDON WELLS reporter
Battling a rare form of soft tissue sarcoma lead one graduate student to study pubic health. Then COVID-19 came to the states, and her research morphed into how cancer patients faced the pandemic. Aldara Henderson, of Tampa Bay, Florida, began her graduate education at SIUE after going into partial remission. “About five years ago I went to the hospital with pain, and it turned out I had stage four cancer and they gave me four months to live,” Aldara said. “With what I experienced and the connections I’ve made with other cancer patients and with COVID-19 and everything going on, it is so important to reach out and help [cancer patients].” Dr. Hauibo Xin, associate professor and chair of the Department of Applied Health, served as Aldara’s mentor and chair of her thesis committee. Xin said given the lack of guidelines for cancer patients during the pandemic, Aldara’s research was all the more valuable. “[During COVID-19], I think she realized cancer patients may experience more challenges, but she also realized how resilient cancer patients could be,” Xin said. “She was very interested in knowing how they’re doing and what they’re doing during COVID-19 situations — there’s a significant lack of guidelines for cancer patients during public health emergencies.” Aldara interviewed over 200 patients. “I had an open question of ‘What have been challenges you have faced with cancer during COVID-19?’ and some of the sto-
ries people anonymously wrote were heartbreaking,” Aldara said. “We had people who had their scans delayed and delayed and delayed and by the time they were diagnosed [the cancer] had already metastasized.” Aldara’s own journey battling soft tissue sarcoma was unique. According to Dr. Peter Anderson, professor and pediatric oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic, Aldara’s cancer was extremely rare — it involved her abdomen and a tumor with a rare fusion gene. “She had one of the highest risk cancers imaginable. Most people with multiple metastases die — probably greater than 90 percent,” Anderson said. “She managed to stay on track and get all the therapy she could.” Anderson said he thinks her treatment was full of doubts from her oncologist about whether her surgery could be done, but she made a request that inspired him to change his outlook on cancer treatment. “Instead of asking for a cure, she said ‘I would like to become a statistical outlier,’” Anderson said. “I’ve actually used her saying in my practice many times since then — teaching patients and their caregivers and family how to interact with oncologists.” David Henderson, Aldara’s husband, said the search for doctors was a difficult road. “One doctor just told us, ‘I don’t even know what to do’ — the next one said, ‘I’m sorry, you’re going to die in four months’ and I went, ‘Whelp. You’re not the one either,’” David said. “We went through all of that and we finally came to a couple of doctors that said ‘Look, I can’t promise you

anything, but we’ll try’ and that’s what we went with.” Once Aldara reached partial remission, David encouraged her to go back to school. “I actually said to her, ‘I want you to go back to college. I think now is a good time. You’ve been without cancer for a while now,’” David said. “The thing that went through my mind was she thought, ‘[Why] spend all that money and that time when I’m going to be dead in two years?’ and then I went ‘when you’re not [dead], you’re going to have a master’s degree. Do it now and if the cancer comes back, we’ll deal with it — we’ll figure it out.’” David said he is very proud of what his wife has been able to accomplish after ev-

erything she’s been through. “Having gone from what happened in February of 2016 to now has been an amazing turnaround, with every aspect of her life,” David said. Aldara said she is excited to graduate, but she wishes she got to experience more in-person research projects like one she had in Uganda to research mosquitoes and malaria. The in-person research was canceled over the summer due to the pandemic. “It’s great — it’s like I made it through. I live my life in increments between scans, and right now it’s every six months,” Aldara said. “It’s just going to be nice that before this next scan, I’ll have my graduation under my belt.”

A big aspect of a program that I wanted to match with was the opportunity to teach other pharmacy students, medical residents and pharmacy staff.” From professor to friend, Ingold said Ferguson has been a mentor for her throughout her four years at SIUE. Ferguson said she noticed her passion and commitment from the first time she had her in class. “I think she is well balanced. She is motivated in other areas of her life too – her personal fitness, she has a big following in her personal life related with fitness and motivating other people to engage in wellness and activities. I feel like naturally through her personality, it’s a good fit [that] she is giving something to somebody else,” Ferguson said. Ingold said pursuing a career within academia can be on the retail side – such as working at companies like Pfizer or Express Scripts. She said it can also be within a teaching hospital or in a university setting, which is the side she wants to explore. “I have a passion for being a preceptor for other pharmacy students as a practicing pharmacist, but then also potentially teaching at a school of pharmacy,” Ingold said. “Choosing the pharmacy path was a little bit on a whim, but it ended up being everything I ever wanted. I absolutely love it.”
Pharmacy graduate to move across U.S., pursue career in academia Soon to be a college graduate and wife, Kristen Ingold, of Freeburg, Illinois, is ready to start a new chapter in her personal and professional lives. Ingold said she’s stayed involved at SIUE with various activities, one of which was a vaccine clinic for homeless people in St. Louis. With the help of a professor and holding an internship license in Missouri, Ingold said she was fortunate to have this opportunity. “[Professor Chris Herndon] has a friend over in St. Louis who reached out to multiple different professors,” Ingold said. “[His friend] would appreciate any help at running COVID-19 vaccination clinics for mental health patients at his pharmacy. I went over there and was handed a box of supplies and [told], ‘Here you go. There’s your room.’ It was just me vaccinating in a room with the patients.” After spending a Friday vaccinating patients, she said she now has knowledge and experience with giving vaccines, something she didn’t have before. Associate Professor for Pharmacy Practice McKenzie Ferguson said Ingold’s attitude towards helping others has always been there. “She has always had a very strong drive and personal motivation,” Ferguson said. “She entered our program knowing she was going to do everything in her power to give her the experiences she needed to identify with where she wanted to be and

Anthropology student won several awards, helped create Little Free Library during her time at SIUE PAULA BROOKS reporter
During her time at SIUE, Evan Senat, an anthropology major from Belleville, Illinois, has done many impactful things such as helping create the Little Free Library on campus, but her education will not end with graduation. This summer she plans to study abroad. During this semester Senat won many awards, like the Robin Brown Memorial Life Experience Award in Anthropology and Community Engagement in Anthropology, and she also won a scholarship. “I won the Community Engagement Award because I have been working the po-
sition of community outreach chair for the SIUE College Democrats,” Senat said. “As well as that I also had an internship at a local historical museum here in Belleville for the entirety of my senior year, and I have also been a volunteer Cougar Guide.” Senat also worked on many different projects in her time here, such as working as a Legacy Leadership student, being a Cougar Guide and being a student captioner; students that volunteer and caption lectures for professors. Julie Zimmermann, the chair of the anthropology department and professor, said one of the most impressive things Senat was able to do has been helping create the Little Free Library at The Gardens. It is a
Library that you can pick books out for free and then if you chose to, you can replace the book you took with a new one. “What I’m most impressed about was her help with the book drive to collect books for the Little Library in the SIUE Garden,” Zimmermann said. “Specifically, she wanted targeted books that were about diversity and inclusion.” James Beverly, an applied communications studies major from Belleville, Illinois, and friend of Senat, said one thing that was always a challenge for Senat was balancing work, school and time with her friends. “Sometimes she just doesn’t have the time to just breathe and hang out with her friends,” Beverly said. “It’s because she
wants to help and do everything she possibly can.” Senat is looking forward to her graduation and also having her commencement because it will be held in person this year. “I’m really excited,” Senat said. “This has just been what I’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of college.” After graduation Senat doesn’t plan on ending her academic career. She plans to go abroad and study to continue learning even more after graduation. She wants to get the experience of going abroad to another country. “I actually applied for anthropological field school in Malta for the summer,” Senat said.

Environmental science duo studies effects of human-made pollutants on flatworms EMILY STERZINGER online editor
Senior projects can be stressful, but it helps to have a friend by your side. Haley Brashears, from Harrisburg, Illinois, and Miranda Jackson, from Jerseyville, Illinois, are both environmental science majors and best friends who collaborated on their URCA projects. For their projects, they studied the effects of environmental pollutants on a small aquatic flatworm, also known as a planarian. Jackson’s project focuses on the effects caused by glyphosate, whereas Brashears’ was focused on the effects of microplastics. Associate Professor of Environmental Science Kyong Yoon served as the pair’s primary mentor on their projects. “They’re using a freshwater invertebrate animal called planarians. Planarians are actually a useful model organism for studying tissue regeneration and aging issues,” Yoon said. “We were particularly interested in using this model organism for testing the effects of environmental pollut-
ants such as glyphosate, which is a widely used herbicide, and plastic waste that ends up in our stream systems, that through the weathering process are ground up and broken down.” Glyphosate is commonly used in herbicide, but often leeches into the environment around it. Jackson said, “Glyphosate is the active ingredient in an herbicide called Roundup that I’m sure everyone knows and uses. It’s also ubiquitous in the environment and has been known to cause some adverse health effects.” Brashears expressed the benefit of living together while working on their projects. “We get to come home and talk about our projects together, and get to talk about our ideas with one another pretty much whenever we want. I’ll just be sitting in my room and go over to her and be like, ‘I have this really cool idea, what do you think?’ and then we can give each other constructive criticism and actually figure out what’s best and what’s most relevant to do next with our projects,” Brashears said.
Jackson emphasized how their friendship and living situation prevented challenges in communication. “We live together and we met at SIUE, so working hand-in-hand with my best friend was kind of awesome,” Jackson said. “We got to talk about it at school, at home, in our classes, while we were just sitting at home, so there were really no challenges as far as communication, which I think was a really big benefit to the project.” Collaboration between departments is common for SIUE’s various science faculty, and research will often overlap within multiple fields. Brashears’ and Jackson’s projects were overseen by both Yoon and Associate Professor of Biology Amy Hubert. “Our department has faculty members with a very wide range of backgrounds, and then everyone has a different research focus. It’s pretty common to collaborate with other faculty members from different departments,” Yoon said. Jackson initially started her studies as a biology major, but shifted to environ-
mental science due to her passion for how the environment impacts biology. “I’ve always been really passionate about the health of the environment. When I started, I was originally a biology major, and I took the introductory courses, but I started learning more about toxicants in the environment that are man-made and I just got more passionate about why this was happening, the fate of these chemicals, how it affects us and other organisms,”Jackson said. Brashears said it’s impossible to do research like this alone. “This is all about teamwork. Collaboration is so important to the scientific process, and for mental stability and sanity. I just think everyone should really not be afraid to reach out and ask for help, and to tell people when you need someone,” Brashears said.

three different modules: the school to prison pipeline, criminalization of poverty and the privatization of prisons. Covington said she praised Whitlock’s ability to both research these topics and think critically. “Zaria has done a great job during her internship time of acquiring, I would say, underdeveloped research — so areas where there’s not much to find, she’s put in the work to dig, to connect different entities so we can move forward,” Covington said. “So she’s been influential in terms of her determination, the innovative ways that she thinks … and the humanizing factor that she has to empathize with all people groups.” Hall said Whitlock has been a steady, positive presence throughout her college life. “She’s literally been there every step of the way. she’s been there,” Hall said. “We roomed together my sophomore year, and so we always talked every night, just us in our apartment just eating, or just chilling and watching movies and things like that, just bonding over time.” According to Hall, the strength of this bond means Whitlock’s departure will take some getting used to. “I was talking to her today, and she was saying how she’s getting ready to leave,” Hall said. “I can’t imagine going through these years without her, because she has literally just been an anchor in my life to keep me grounded through a lot of things, especially with my mental health.” With the student-athlete march and her internship behind her, Whitlock said she’s looking toward a future somewhat along her father’s path, but intends to continue her own activism wherever she goes. “My father is actually a criminal defense attorney in Minnesota and I’ve wanted to go to law school for a long time, so my path
is kind of set in that direction in general,” Whitlock said “But as things change, and after I graduate this semester, I’m open to anything. But I believe anything that I do in my future will be, in some ways, involved in advocacy or policy reform, something of that nature.” Covington said Whitlock’s ability to manage all she’s done in her college career makes her a primary contender for any employer after graduation. “Being a student-athlete … it’s a fulltime job — and the fact that her grades are excellent and she’s seeking this type of hard work that is calling her to deal with her emotions, being a Black woman in this country … it’s a huge deal,” Covington said. “If anybody reads this that’s looking to hire, she is a top candidate, seriously. Your time management, your ability to be disciplined in terms of your nutrition, getting the rest you need, studying and still having time to be a human, it’s excellent. She’s the best, in my opinion, that I’ve seen do it.”
