The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s student newspaper, has won the First Place with Special Merit Award in the annual awards given by the American Scholastic Press Association. Last year, they placed second.

Former Editor-in-Chief Hailey Huffines and current Managing Editor Puja Mehta were also awarded the distinction of Outstanding Investigative Reporting for their story “Gov. Rauner proposes hard-hitting budget cuts.”

Work reviewed was from the 2015-2016 academic year.

Publications that receive First Place with Special Merit awards score more than 950 points out of a maximum of 1,000 possible points, and, in the opinion of the reviewer, was an outstanding overall example of scholastic publication in format, content and presentation. The Alestle scored 965 points.

“This is so exciting. I was hoping we would move up in the rankings, but am so very pleased we moved to the top rung,” Student Publications Program Director Tammy Merrett said. “The Alestle staff may not be perfect, but they have a lot to be proud of for sure.”

The ASPA’s annual review and contest for scholastic newspapers, yearbooks and magazines compares student publications to others at colleges, universities and high schools around the nation.

Judges base their scores on page design, story layout, graphics, headlining, style, advertising and photography, content, creativity and editing.

The Alestle competed nationally against many other four-year school newspapers from across the country. Only five other colleges and universities were winners in the same category, including the Daily Titan at California State University – Fullerton and the Fordham Ram at Fordham University.

Points are allocated in the various competition categories based on a judges’ assessment.

The Alestle scored highest in content coverage and creativity with a perfect score. Other high scores included art, advertising and illustrations; and editing.

The judge’s comments about former Editor-in-Chief Hailey Huffines and her staff in the letter from ASPA were positive.

“You have an excellent school newspaper, which shows the creativity and journalistic knowledge of your editors, reporters, writers, photographers, layout/graphics designers and adviser.”

SIUE’s student newspaper regularly wins awards in the annual Associated Collegiate Press Best of Show Awards and the annual Illinois College Press Association awards as well.

Third candidate presents goals for available chancellor position KENDRA MARTIN Alestle Reporter

Andrew Rogerson, Sonoma State University provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, is the third chancellor candidate for SIUE. He presented his plans if he was to become the next SIUE chancellor to a faculty and staff forum Thursday, April 28.

Rogerson presented a business model he worked on while at Sonoma State University that addressed important elements of being a chancellor of a university such as signature formative experience, collaborative classroom experience, skill-based education and co-curricular learning.

Rogerson said it is important for a university to work to ensure students attending SIUE are getting the quality education they need and deserve.

“Let’s work together to create a compelling campus that will attract students,” Rogerson said.

“Let’s create a niche that would make students want to come to SIUE.” During his presentation, Rogerson said there are many causes for concern that relate heavily to students. Those include student debt nationwide — which is over $1 trillion —and individual debt which is $26,000 and above. In the last 20 years, 31 million students dropped out of school without their degree, and

there is a six-year graduation rate that is 56 percent nationwide.

Rogerson said he wants to be able to help students and faculty combat those statistics.

“I can be a facilitator for SIUE with experience, knowledge and courage,” Rogerson said.

According Rogerson’s presentation, today’s universities lack a coherent vision, but tomorrow’s universities disseminate knowledge, generate knowledge and show students how to apply knowledge. Universities with no achievement gap institution priority, date driven decisions, have clear roadmaps, engage faculty and never give up.

Rogerson said students are the main priority of SIUE, and he wants to make sure they are being presented with every opportunity possible and not just the bare minimum.

“We want students to come to SIUE to not only get a job, but [to also] create a life and develop relationships,” Rogerson said.

“We need pathways for completion, and that will require institutional change.”

Rogerson said it is also important that faculty remains motivated when it comes to education.

“The importance of faculty staying engaged in what is going on in education is extremely

important because that is what makes students want to continue their education,” Rogerson said.

“You have a great university. I am overly impressed, and I have faith in this university.”

Catherine Foland, associate director for the bursar, said she thought Rogerson’s presentation was great, and she said he brought a lot of information to the faculty on how to tackle the budget situation that is affecting SIUE. “I thought he did an amazing job because I thought he was very realistic in terms of the budget situation we are facing,” Foland said. “I loved how he’s looked at strategies that other schools have used. I think that was bringing a wealth of information, and I thought the way he emphasized the collaboration with faculty was spot on and what we need to do to keep everything [moving] forward, and I think he is an outstanding candidate.”

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jeffrey Waple said he was pleased with Rogerson’s presentation.

“I really enjoyed his model that he put up about his time at Sonoma State about solving problems, skill based education and co-curricular learning,” Waple said. “He gets that it takes a university to educate a student, so I much enjoyed his model.”

Although Waple said he enjoyed Rogerson’s presentation, he said it is still premature to judge on who will be the best fit for chancellor.

“I think Dr. Rogerson, Dr. Lovell and Dr. Gibson all have the potential to lead,” Waple said.

“It all depends on what best fits us though. We have one more candidate, so it is not fair to judge yet, but I think any of them have the ability because they all bring something different, and they all have different strengths for the role.”

Nursing school graduate commencement speaker encourages peers to never stop setting goals KENDRA MARTIN Alestle Reporter

As members of the graduating class of spring 2016 prepare themselves for their upcoming commencement ceremony, senior nursing major Nathan William Wiederholt, of O’Fallon, Ill., prepares himself for a speech he will make to his fellow graduates Friday, May 6 in the Vadalabene Center.

Wiederholt said he wants the focal point of his speech to recognize the core values that SIUE recognizes SIUE’s core values because he said he felt those values are what got him through in his undergraduate career.

“Since I am speaking on behalf of my fellow graduates, I want to focus on all of us embodying the core values that SIUE upholds,” Wiederholt said. “I feel understanding and appreciating those values is what led us this far and got us here to graduation.”

Wiederholt said his time at SIUE has been amazing, and he is appreciative of all the memories and friends he was able to make here.

erything because the campus and community [are] really inclusive.”

Wiederholt said he will miss the university’s warm community and the ability to see his friends regularly.

“I will definitely miss being able to hang out with my friends on a daily basis,” Wiederholt said. “It’s always nice being able to recognize familiar faces when you’re on campus.”

Since Wiederholt will soon be an alumnus, he said one thing he wishes for SIUE in the future is that it soon becomes a bigger and more popular university among prospective students.

“If I could change one thing, I would want to see more graduates coming from SIUE,” Wiederholt said. “It is a great school, and I feel having more alumni coming from this school will be great for the university.”

Although Wiederholt said he hopes the university becomes more well known in the future, he said one thing he hope never changes about SIUE is the small, intimate class sizes.

“I hope the classes remain small,” Wiederholt said. “It is very beneficial to me and students as well to be able to have opportunities to speak with professors outside of class on a

daily basis, and we actually have a chance to get to know them because the classes are so small.”

Since the graduates will be going their separate ways, Wiederholt said he encourages his fellow graduates to continue following their dreams and to always make new goals.

“If I could give a piece of advice to my fellow graduates, I would say reach for your goals, but continue to make new goals,” Wiederholt said. “Never become content. Always try to continue bettering yourself because only positive things can come from that.”

For the incoming freshman class, Wiederholt said one piece of advice he would give them is to not be afraid to take chances while in college because college is a time where you have room for mistakes.

“When you are a freshman, don’t be afraid to take risks,” Wiederholt said. “Take risks with majors and classes because you may not know what you really enjoy and odds are, you might end up finding something really special that is right for you that you didn’t know before.”

Chicago State lays off a third of its staff year without state money as lawmakers were unable to agree on a budget. Last week, lawmakers approved $20.1 million in emergency funding for Chicago State, part of a larger funding package for public universities, but it proved to be too little, too late.

"It was less than what we needed and later than we needed it, as much as we appreciated getting it," Calhoun said. "It really is a Band-Aid and not the solution."

Chicago State employees have been on edge since February, when officials sent notices of potential layoffs to all 900 employees. The university said it would not be able to meet payroll costs past April without state money.

Earlier this month, Calhoun instructed administrators and civil service employees not to return to work after April 30 unless specifically told otherwise through a recall notice.

Then, in a process that began Thursday, April 29 and will likely continue through the weekend, some employees were "recalled," or told that their jobs were safe for now. Employees who did not get notified should understand that their jobs were cut, Calhoun said.

Calhoun also said employees can be recalled in the future if the university realizes their positions are needed.

Chicago State University on Friday said more than 300 employees are being laid off, a dramatic downsizing a week after the school received some long-awaited money from the state, the Tribune has learned.

The layoffs — which equal about one-third of the workforce — are effective immediately.

"It's dreadful. I have spoken to people as they have been packing up their offices," Chicago State President Thomas Calhoun Jr. said in an interview with the Tribune. "It is not disheartening for the future of the university. The university has been here 150 years and will continue to be here."

Calhoun said the cuts will touch every area of the university — from associate vice presidents to police officers, counselors and carpenters — and will reduce the number of non-instructional employees by nearly half. Faculty members were spared during this initial wave of cuts, but are likely to be affected later.

The cuts will save about 40 percent in payroll costs, or about $2 million a month, Calhoun said. They come after Chicago State and other Illinois schools went nearly the entire academic

"The recall process really is a process," he said. "If we find, for example, that we are short in an area that is creating a bottleneck or a way in which we cannot function ... we will make note of that and recall appropriately.”

"We are hoping not to have a dramatic impact on the student experience because we want students to have a fulfilling day every day they come to the campus," Calhoun said.

Located on the Far South Side, Chicago State serves about 4,500 mostly minority and low-income students from the city.

It had nearly depleted its cash reserves when the state approved the emergency funding — less than 60 percent of what the university had expected to receive this fiscal year. The funding was part of a $600 million stopgap measure to ensure that struggling campuses would stay open through the summer after the longest budget delay in state history.

Of the $600 million, $356 million is for universities, $74 million for community colleges and $170 million for Monetary Award Program scholarships for low-income students. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the bill Monday, April 26.

While the cash influx provided some relief, it was not enough

to prevent the layoffs. Some of the money needs to go toward outstanding vendor bills. The university also has to prepare for a tenuous future, with uncertainty about student enrollment this fall and continued questions about if and when the state will approve more funding.

Deep partisan rifts remain over the state budget. Some lawmakers have hinted that last week's funding could be the only state money that universities will receive for the 2015-16 school year, and the uncertainty will likely extend to next fiscal year, which begins in July.

Faculty members remain in limbo. Calhoun previously told them to work until May 15, the day their annual contracts end, and he said Friday that those positions are still being evaluated.

"I do expect there is a likelihood that not all faculty will be recalled," he said. He also said the university will close some buildings this summer to reduce utility and maintenance costs and will evaluate academic programs, a routine process that will involve more scrutiny this year because of the fiscal situation.

"There are those kinds of tough decisions that certainly will be made as we go through this program review process," Calhoun said.

On Friday, Chicago State employees said they were left largely in the dark, not knowing whether they would be laid off or how many of their colleagues would be let go.

"This is a staggering number.

It is a lot more than I expected," said Robert Bionaz, president of the faculty union, which represents some academic service professionals who were laid off.

"It's profound that you talk about laying off half of your non-instructional staff. I just don't know who is going to do the work."

Other schools also have cut staff this year.

Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago eliminated 65 non-instructional positions. Western Illinois University has cut 147 positions, including 30 faculty jobs, and about 500 employees are taking furlough days and pay cuts this spring. Northern Illinois University avoided layoffs during the budget impasse, but has left 116 jobs unfilled during this academic year.

While all public institutions have suffered this year, Chicago State has been the hardest-hit.

The semester ended Thursday — two weeks early — to ensure that students could graduate before the money ran out.

Langhorst leaves legacy in commencement speech PUJA MEHTA Alestle Managing Editor

Graduation is not only a time for celebration, but also a time to reminisce on the years spent on education.

At this year’s graduation, commencement speaker and mechanical engineering major Ollie Langhorst, of St. Louis, plans to speak about the obstacles he faced throughout his education. “[I plan to] speak on some of the difficulties I had to overcome, including graduating high school with less than a 1.9 GPA,” Langhorst said.

Langhorst said he also plans to discuss struggles that inevitably come with the 21st century. “[I will] also reassure the graduating body that they have the skills to overcome the challenges associated with the digital age,” Langhorst said.

Although Langhorst will be addressing the graduating class in his speech, he also has some advice for incoming students.

“You will have failures, but as long as you learn from them and keep striving, then you will succeed,” Langhorst said.

Despite the fact that Langhorst has spent his time at SIUE as a student, school is not what he will miss most. “[I will miss] morel [mushroom] hunting in the forest before class,” Langhorst said.

Langhorst said he also hopes to see some positive changes at the university.

“Do away with tenure and develop a system where progressive and effective teaching methodologies are adopted more readily,” Langhorst said. “A nap room wouldn’t hurt, either.”

Langhorst said what distinguished his time at the university the most was the time he could devote to education and working with inspiring people. “[I enjoyed] having time in my life to learn about things in a deep, scholarly manner,” Langhorst said.

Langhorst will be speaking at the School of Pharmacy, Graduate School and School of Engineering commencement at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Vadalabene Center.
