ALEX TAPIA
First year Master of Architecture Track II student at the University of Oregon. I Received my B.S in Design of Architecture with a Minor in Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May 2018. After graduating, I took the year and worked on a construction crew as a general laborer where I got a handson learning experience of construction methods and assembly. My interest and passion involves applying the field of psychology in architecture. My undergraduate focus in psychology was the study of sociology, abnormal, perception and cognitive psychology. It is important for architects to understand human nature in order to design. Although it may feel like common sense, understanding why people behave a certain way and what can be done to
probe these actions can be very powerful in architecture. I found it incredibly useful to also study the abnormal psychology of people that are atypical, by knowing the full spectrum of human disabilities one can design a more empathetic space that can truly be inclusive to all. As I continue to design, I keep in mind the physiology of thoughts and how we are able to perceive the world. This enables me to make architectural moves that can enhance the essence of a space to provoke a specific emotion. As I continue my graduate studies I hope to further develop my process and apply it in practice. My intention as a designer is to make humankind more aware of the power of space and the impact architecture can have on emotion and the human psyche.

ACCEPTANCE
TOPIC The history of compassionate housing associated with health-care facilities, for families facing a health-crisis of a loved one, goes back many decades into the last century. Originally focused on families of very ill children, the programs then expanded to the families of veterans, and now to families of the ill of any age or background. More recently, with a growing sense of compassion for the healthcare workers themselves in times of health crisis, healthcare facilities are exploring ways to provide for short-term housing for their staff when events, such as the current pandemic, call for nearly constant on-duty shift-cycles. In both of these cases, those facing intense healthcare situations are brought together in impromptu ways, in often unforeseen circumstances, and uncertain outcomes. As such, they are in need of a place to find personal space and solace, that also allows for opportunities to be together with others in similar situations, all in settings that can foster peace and community even when contagions force the social to be at a distance. This studio will explore the architectural implications and opportunities that arise in creating designs to support emotional and physical health during times of health crises, whether at the personal and family level, or at the community or national scale. In addition, as human health is closely tied with healthful built environments, and with the health of the greater environment, the studio will explore a wide-range of issues of environmental sustainability, incorporating those ideas not only as functional and practical elements, but also exploring how those elements can inform, and even become, the architecture itself, while also analyzing, documenting and detailing the solutions in a structured way for presentation.

Hillside Elementary is in dire need of remodeling. This is a proposal for a new building. The hardship of this project was the large program requirement on the existing site with a 40 ft drop in elevation over the slope of land. My focus and goal was to provide clear circulation for safety and simplicity and to arrange the programs to benefit the students, staff, and community.

N EUGENE SITS AS AN INTERSECTION IN OREGON’S THRIVING WINE REGIONS. G/T SERVES AS A HUB FOR THESE WINERIES AND PROVIDES AN EXPERIENCE PAIRING WITH THE CULINARY EXPERTISE DEVELOPED IN HOUSE.
NICKNAMED SILICON SHIRE, EUGENE SERVES TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS STARTUPS WITH ITS CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVING INFRASTRUCTURE. G/T BECOMES ANOTHER NODE IN THE NETWORK OF THIS RAPIDLY GROWING SYSTEM FOR FREE-SPIRITED ENTREPRENEURS.
G/T FACES EUGENE’S MAJOR AXIS, WILLAMETTE STREET, AND 11th AVENUE. RUNNING BEHIND THE SITE IS OAK ALLEY AND 1Oth ALLEY. THESE MAJOR CORRIDORS FOR VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN PASSAGE, ALONG WITH THE BUS STATION, INFLUENCED THE PROGRAMMATIC LAYOUT AND INTERNAL CIRCULATION.

G/T PROVIDES THE COMMUNITY A SPACE TO IMPROVE IN THE CULINARY ARTS. THERE IS SPACE FOR EUGENE’S EXISTING AND THRIVING FOOD TRUCK AND FOOD CART CULTURE. THE ROTATING CHEF FOOD COURT ENCOURAGES THE CHEFS TO BUILD A REPUTATION AND PROVIDES THEM TOOLS IN ORDER TO ALLOW THEM TO OPEN THEIR OWN RESTAURANT AS THEY PROGRESS. THE ULTIMATE GOAL WITHIN THE BUILDING IS TO BE ABLE TO COOK FOR THE WINERY AND CATER FOR THE BUILDING’S EVENTS AS A PROFESSIONALLY ESTABLISHED CHEF.

2.3 THE INCUBATOR ANYWHERE
FALL 2017- ELLEN DONNELLY & MATT KNUTSON [IN COLLABORATION W TASHIA MUMM & BRENT HOSCHAR] Beginning with research on the human form of migration, in particular ‘the pilgrimage” we were tasked with turning the essence of the settlement or unsettlement typology in to architecture. The inspiration behind The Incubator were hostel stays along walk paths for pilgrims which serve as transient spaces and spaced for commune and gathering. This beast, can grow anywhere and grow upon itself to accommodate it’s users. Ever-changing and informal. The Incubator not only shelters people, but learns the stories and uses technology to encourage interaction.
