DOWNTOWN FITNESS ARCH 206
Bryan is an up-and-coming community with a rich historical context, as well as an integration into the modern vernacular. While new construction continues to go up, I wanted to facilitate a community gym and cafe for a rising and proud downtown area, while also providing a safe space for gatherings and relaxing. The building exemplifies the works of the great Richard Meier, combining form and depth of skin to create meaningful space.

Given the historical aspect of Downtown Bryan, we were given an architect to grow our work from while also responding to the site itself. I was given Richard Meier, and based the majority of my work on his concepts and perspective on architecture. The main points stressed were to create a building based off solid geometry, with voids and sets of planes to create depth while responding to the corner site condition.

The main focus was to create depth of skin, and to create interest for on-looking pedestrians. One way to create this interest was by using depth created by exhisting wall structures. Some of these structures appear to extrude out, appearing to float away from the main building. shadow study

Located to the south of downtown Dallas, this gallery is designed as a testament to the main motifs of Gerhard Richter’s work. Given the site location between downtown Dallas and Trinity River Park, the gallery strikes a balance between displaying the artist’s work and responding to its context. The building is divided into three galleries, each exhibiting a main motif of his work: representational, sculptural, and abstract. Upon entrance to the building, one is taken through a promenade of Richter’s work, each displaying a main motif of his art.

Richter’s works can be divided into three categories, each of which worked on through different stages of his career. In order to respect his work and showcase his artistry, the external massing of the design expresses a hierarchy of these stages, while the interior showcases the progression of his work through his career.

THE CHEVRON ARCH 405
The car, people, and architecture are the love triangle that never was. For the past century, the automobile has infested Houston and transformed the city fabric drastically impacting the daily lives of citizens. Architecture has had to find its place among a grid patterned downtown swarmed by piercing skyscrapers, and a knot of highway overpasses. This project proposes an honest rejection of the car, allowing for total humanized interaction between all levels of architecture.

The program is split into three main components: underground parking, ground level public realm, and the elevated architecture center. The idea of giving the power to the car is rejected, instead, and is tucked away from the public in the form of an automated lot 3 stories deep into grade. On the ground plane, the public are welcomed to a large courtyard, restaurant and gallery which preludes to a dynamic architecture center. Two towers divide the main public attractions on the west and administrative offices on the east. An open courtyard on the 3rd floor looks on to the Houston skyline. Houston as a whole can serve as an architecture free for all. Downtown includes works from masters such as Mies Van der Rohe and Phillip Johnson, making it an ideal place to reate a facility that celebrates not only Houston, but how important American architecture has influenced the world. 1000 CLay Street is an ideal site with indeniable potential. Sandwiched between colossal landmarks like the Enron tower and the Toyota Center creates a need to introduce a humanized scale between the inner loop of I 45 and I 10. “The Chevron� will provoke new ways to experience the downtown setting, and enhance the context.

glass reinforced polyester In order to create the shading fins used on the exterior of the building, a material was sought out that was light enough to be thinned out to extreme dimensions yet retain high strength. GRP is made from a combination of glass fibre mat and polyester resin. It has high tensile, compresive and shear strength yet still maintains a low density as well as resisting corrotion, mainting its bright red elegance.

During the summer of 2014 I was able to join the Jacobs Engineering Advance Planning Group as an Intern. I was subjected to hands-on client interaction meetings, traveling, and using my skillset I’ve learned in school thus far. During the last two weeks I was given an individual task of constructing a digital model for a highway overpass for the i4 project in Florida.

Jacobs Engineering at the time of my employment was involved in a series of projects designing highway overpasses for FDOT. The landscape group in my department needed a hand putting together a digital model for a client presentation. I was given the plan view shown on the right, and asked to extrude the lines with the information I was given with a master SketchUp file containing pre-set barrier walls. The design was done exclusively in SketchUp by importing the given linework from AutoCAD. I had to design the pre-set barriers to fit the line work and given ADA requirements.
