DESCRIPTION As part of the Zoho Action Planning workshop – within UMD (Urban Management and Development) MSc program of IHS (Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies – Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam) participants developed an analysis of the issues and potential of the Zoho area. One of the issues found in the area was the lack of community feeling, especially a lack of integration and communication between local residents and the creative industry professionals operating in the Zoho/Agniesebuurt area. These two communities are separated and not taking advantage of the potential benefits of their coexistence. Those findings were confirmed during discussions with stakeholders including representatives of Deelgeemente Rotterdam Noord, Havensteder, as well as during meetings with other actors, during the Zoho Programmers Sessions. In this framework we developed the Ik Ben Zoho project. What: Ik Ben Zoho aims to stimulate the development of a community feeling within the Zoho / Agniesebuurt area, by stimulating greater interactions among the residents, between residents and workers, and improving the coordination between the local actors of the on-going projects being developed in the area.
Ik Ben Zoho wants to increase the communication and collaboration among the various actors operating in the area, both on the virtual and the physical level using two tools. A. By stimulating discussions, ideas exchange and communication on a virtual platform based on a Facebook group (facebook.com/groups/ikbenzoho). Similar experiences in different cities and countries prove that a “virtual” connection can serve as a first step towards a real, physical acquaintance and can thus increase community feelings. B. The issues and topics been discussed within the Ik Ben Zoho Facebook group will serve as a base for developing a “buurt magazine”, to be freely distributed and promoted in the Zoho/Agniesebuurt area. The magazine will be produced in a form that will enable us to also use it as a public space intervention by hanging on the neighbourhood walls. The concept behind Ik Ben Zoho Magazine is that it should be the both the mean and the result to achieve the goal of integration among residents and professionals. We seek for residents interested in collaborating with professionals of the graphic design field in order to develop a quarterly publication and promote the integration of the area. It doesn’t matter if you were born in ZOHO live in ZOHO or just come to work... If you are in ZOHO, IK BEN ZOHO!

Los Imperdonables, Bolivia 2013
Los Imperdonables project is an intervention that promotes urban culture and youth. The project strengthens the appreciation and identification of citizenship with a holistic and prospective approach. It aims to influence the public policy framework on urban issues and thus contribute to the ability of a changing process in addressing economic, political and cultural inequality and discrimination. The project discloses the major benefits of the city allowing appreciation of it and promoting unexplored places. It is a challenge to promote modern art, social and economic glances, activating images, places, feelings and emotions of multiculturalism. It is to break the monotony of everyday life, acting as a bridge that illustrates and recreates proposals and opportunities between the traditional and modern ideas with the freshness of alternative spaces that generate "other" causes every day culture. This project gives young people a leading role , taking them as allies and main means of supply for informational transiting bridges and also fulfill a role and emotional impact of major influence , showing their experiences through modern communication formats, thus establishing a dialogue on their networks and alternative media. With these objectives , the project portrays and 50 innovative projects and iconographic places as inspiration found in the city of La Paz. Among landscapes, meals, sports, entertainment, transcending traditions, customs with modernity, in a world that can be heard and seen from new perspectives. The project is expected to develop a mechanism of social responsibility, high traffic of information between consumers , providers and regulators of services as improvement in the value chain. These mechanisms will create strategic prospects and opportunities and sustainable competitive advantages, turning the project into an engine influx for 50 recommended places and creating job opportunities. The project was formulated from the work and participation of stakeholders and focus groups, visits, interviews, reviews that allowed a diagnosis of emergent and important, discoverable on interactive and intercultural tourism
Social Street Map, Italy 2013
The idea of “social street” originates from the experience of the Facebook (FB) group “Residents in Fondazza street – Bologna” starting in september 2013. The purpose of the Social Street is to promote socialization between neighbors resident in the same street in order to build relationships, to interchange needs, to share expertise and knowledges, to implement common interest projects, with common benefits from a closer social interaction. To reach this zero cost objective, without opening new sites or platforms, Social Street makes use of the creation of Facebook closed groups. The primary goal of the “Social Street” initiative is to socialize with the people in the neighborhood in order to meet daily life individual needs, factual help, sharing of activities, exchange of views, opinions….. endless possibilities.It is a no-profit activity with social purpose. Social Street is not pursuing any political, religious, ideological view. It brings people together with the sole criterion of the proximity between area residents. > Step1: creating a Facebook closed group > Step 2: Advertising the Group > Step 3: Group Management Once you will have at least 30 people in your group who, maybe, don’t know each other but are living in the same street, they will be able trough the group to solve problems and needs and maybe to support the beginning of new friendships: well, at this point you can say that your Social Street has been successfully activated. > Step 4: From Virtual to Real life The most interesting part of Social Street is represented by the fact that starting on virtual basis (just because you physically don’t know your neighbors), can be turned in real life experience. Within the Facebook Group you can create group events in order to have face to face meeting with your group members! What are you waiting for? There is no need for private spaces or rooms to be rent: there are squares, gardens or the members’ apartments to use for your meetings. Remember that to go on with Social Street there is no need of financial investments but only willingness to interact with your neighbors!

Description The question is: how can we improve the quality of the ZoHo area, without a fixed idea of what is should become and without making risky investments? This is also the underlying question of your assignment that is structured around a number of more precise questions: Mapping the site What kind of social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities are existing in the area? What are the opportunities? How does this translate into space; what spatial qualities are (non-)existing; how are the connections with other parts of the city? How do the different stakeholders perceive the area? What are their interests and how much power do they have? What are the conflicts and synergies between them? Developing ideas for intervention What (this can be physical projects, activities, models of cooperation; new financing models, etc.) can be done to address the challenges and seize the opportunities? The options should be feasible to do with a limited budget (the assumption is that the seed fund can be maximum 1000-5000 Euro, the rest should come from regular budgets or be generated within the proposed projects or strategy). Focus area of our study: the focus area of our study will be the Zomerhof-kwartier area; but we will also take the direct surroundings (mainly the Agniesebuurt) into consideration since there are never hard limits of an area.

Plannen voor ZoHo in 2014 In december last year, our programmers session was at Roodkapje and we took a look at the future of ZoHo. Students from the IHS/EUR presented their final projects and ideas about ZoHo: social, economic, and environmental challenges; stakeholder interests; conflicts and synergies; opportunities for new interventions. Issue: How can we have safer programming in ZoHo? This group brainstormed safety. They identified that more 24-hour functions — or at least more evening/night functions — would increase safety in the neighborhood. The group also said that student housing would add another element of safety. More eyes on the street = safer neighborhood. Issue: What is the ZoHo Lab and what would you want to do there? This group, spearheaded by Studio Bas Sala, wants to start the ZoHo Lab. A place where all types of artists, designers, students, professionals can mingle, network, experiment, learn, and create.

That was Part 1. Part 2 built from the students’ presentations: what is the future of the ZoHo? We had an interactive, brainstorming workshop session where we used the World Cafe method at Roodkapje. We wanted to get to the heart of ZoHo: where are we heading? What issues are the most important for this year? How can we make the area safer? Who are the best partners to come to ZoHo? … our programmers came with their most important issues.
Issue: How do we create more of a ZoHo community and involve the residents? This group explored ways to connect to the residents and local, long-standing entrepreneurs and businesses. They said it’s important to open up the plinths (ground floor), to host festivals, and to develop ideas with the residents. “Your neighbor might be the problem, but also is probably the solution.”
