Teaching Experience Design Workshop
BARC Beyond Architectural Regulations
Tshinghua University School of Architecture Invited Professor. 2009.06.01 – 2010.08.10.
Alex Camprubi led a workshop together with the faculty of Tsinghua University school of Architecture on invitation of the Dutch City Foundation to develop this design workshop. This experience gathered 12 architecture students and confronted a sustainable UTOPIA in a collective effort with 10 international firms in order to establish ground for innovative solutions for a new ambitious eco-city in Caofeidian, Tangshan. Project that was exhibited within the events of the Shanghai Expo 2010 and the Hong Kong Biennale 2012
Caofeidian Eco-City is China’s most ambitious response to date to the triple-challenge of explosive growth, environmental pressure, and healthy human desires for the future. However, planning a city from scratch, on a green field, and overnight are three main challenges that undermine the successful planning of sustainable cities. The Dynamic City Foundation and MARS Architects set out to develop a planning model viable within these harsh conditions. Moving beyond standard top-down planning strategies, we have developed and employed a collaborative planning method, based on evolutionary or timebased planning principles to kick start a transformation of planning process and its outcome. From Generic City to the Genetic City. In a unique collaboration with 5 Dutch and 4 Chinese progressive design companies and Tsinghua University a long-term growth strategy for Caofeidian was developed; not by designing all at once, but in relay; each team adding to the previous proposal. The result is a simulation of thirty years of sustainable expansion: the city as the product of an accumulation of evolving ideas, able to emulate the complexity and organic logic of a slowly maturing city.
Lecturer
Graduate School of Landscape Architecture of Peking University (Now College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture)
Master Degree Program in Landscape Architecture 2007.12.20 – 2009.08.28
Alex Camprubi led several workshops and lectures in the period of collaboration with Peking University The three workshops that were developed with master students of the master degree program where: “Super Green for Sustainable Design” ; “200 years of Urban History in America and Europe” and “Landscape Redesign of the Olympic Green”
Based on Peking University’s profound natural science and humanities studies, the college of architecture and landscape architecture focuses its teaching and research on the complex problem China and the whole world now facing, namely the living environment and the relationship between human and land, the subjects are of multiple scales from river and plain, region, urban area, block, site, to an individual building with its internal and external environment. Across time and space scale, interdisciplinary methodology and strategy are utilized in analyzing and understanding of the natural, biological and humanistic process of urban, country and nature, and the dense tangle of interrelationship among the various factors influencing space, site and the attributes of architecture. Design is used as a tool to solve the problem of living environment and the tension between land resources and human requirements. The college would always launch innovative research and design programme, and foster innovative talents.
