CONCEPT STATEMENT Through the development and design of a pilot training center and lodge, the facility will represent all pilots through the study of social learning. This facility will work to create a healthy and comfortable environment for pilots through the implementation of appropiate educational spaces and amenities that promote socialization and collaborative learning. The pilots must be well cared for with the proper amenities to reduce stress and ease anxiety during the active and fast paced pilot training process.

THESIS STATEMENT The Pilot Training Facility in Richland Center, WI is a 16,000 square foot facility equipped with amenities for aviation education, personal recreation, and living space. The first two levels include proper classroom and training facilities as well as recreational facilities. The upper two levels include hotel style suites for extended stay pilots as well as study rooms. This facility combines living spaces and educational rooms to create an extended stay experience much like a university.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN

CONCEPT

The Pilot Training Facility in Richland Center, Wisconsin is inspired by the horizon and finding direction through the skies and the sun’s natural patterns. Pilots are skilled in using the sun and the horizon in order to determine their direction. Frank Lloyd Wright was well known for ‘horizontal architecture’ where he used the horizon line to orient his designs. Direction and orientation inspire the parti and spatial organization of the space where the parti mimics a compass with north, south, east and west. The concept is intended to motivate pilots to find their direction by utilizing something they are familiar with, the skies and the horizon.

PARTI

The parti is inspired by what all pilots know best, the skies. To follow the symmetrical column grid in the building, the parti is formed by a horizontal line and a vertical line that cross in the center of the space. On the third and fourth levels, the vertical line diminishes into a singular horizontal line. These vertical and horizontal paths represent a compass pointing to north, south, east and west. The parti on the third and fourth levels is a straight horizontal path representing a horizon line.

Following the compass shaped parti and the concept of horizons and direction, the first level is separated into four quadrants constituting the lobby, coffee bar, bar area, and dining area. A staircase in the center of the first level leads pilots, staff and guests into the space. The staircase connects the three foot elevation change on the first level to the ground level. There are two elevators: one for guests and another service elevator for employees to easily move equipment or deliveries.

ENTRY + CAFE

CAFE + LOBBY

Guests and visitors are welcomed into the space with a cafe and lobby area. The cafe encourages visitors and classmates to socialize with one another outside of the classroom spaces. The lobby also has a small information desk where pilots can be checked into their rooms or gather more information on the facility. The cafe and lobby areas are close to large windows that face the east side to invite plenty of natural light. This is purposeful as the space also serves the bodies circadian rhythm with lighting. As the sunrises in the east, guest can visit this space in the morning time to start their day.
