I woke up one day and all colours were gone. The sky was grey and the ground covered in ashes. No birds to be seen. They had all flown away. The animals were hiding. The rumble had scared them. I found no place to hide. I grabbed Nour by the hand and we fled to the hills...

One day, I too, will drive a car. Now I cycle through the neighborhood which is great! In Kabul, girls and women are not allowed to ride a bike. We have to walk everywhere. But I haven’t told you of my favorite dream: I’m grown up, I look beautiful, I work as a gym teacher in a school with children from all over the world… One does not choose to be a stranger in a strange land. And should he or she have the tenacity of a “tough nut”, like Ayshe in our story, they may eventually pull through. But even tough nuts have a soft core... A camel’s snow dream
She lived in the desert with a Bedouin family and worked hard, without ever complaining. Every night, she lay down next to the goats –by her master’s tent– happily chewing away and spitting out, just like every camel the world over. She was quite happy with her life. The only thing that worried her was a dream she kept having every night, year in, year out. She dreamt she was somewhere where everything was covered in snow… A by now classic picture book, Greek IBBY Illustration award 2004, Goldie is a story which encourages young readers to follow their hearts and not give up on their dreams. Mrs Penelope was the proud mother of seventy-five eggs. She had dug a perfect round hole in the sand and had very carefully placed her exquisite eggs in it. She was a very special sea turtle. Unlike others, she didn’t leave her eggs to fate. Instead she hovered and guarded them on the sandy shore and as soon as they cracked, she was there to protect her little ones, give them their names, keep them in line and teach them all they needed to know. A tender story about the little turtle who stands out because of his difficulties in communicating with his family. A book that touches upon the theme of autism. A solitary white sail Gleams white, In the haze of the light blue sea. What does it seek, In countries far away What does it leave behind Sailing away from its native land? Α picture book inspired by Lermontov’s poem “The sail” (Парус,1832). The hero of the story, introduced by the first lines of the poem, is a solitary and inquisitive little ship, sailing away from its native land. Using a concrete palette of colors and geometrical shapes, the illustration familiarizes children with the style and the artistic approach of Russian constructivism.

One beautiful spring morning, Cuckooska woke up and felt like going out. But something really strange had happened to the forest, some of the trees were cut in two… The giraffes were missing their necks! he giraffes were missing their necks! As he flew over the city, he ran into a flock of birds but saw some of them vanishing into the sky! “Cuckooska, our kite has disappeared!”, called out a group of children…
Maro Katsika
Drawing on her love for the Russian Avant-garde (18901930) and her studies as an architect, Maro Katsika creates an imaginary forest, a meeting place for all the birds, characterized by bright colors and geometric designs, familiar to young children from the classical wooden building blocks.

She spent days and nights hidden in tree hollows, or covered in leaves, hungry and cold. But she never regretted leaving Swan Lake. A new world unfolded before her and Izadora’s heart felt it would burst from excitement. Not that she was wasn’t scared… Oh very much so. But she could always dance, and the more she danced the more she managed to keep both fear and loneliness at bay. A small bodied duck, who lives on the shores of Swan Lake, dreams of becoming a ballerina, even though she is not doing at all well at ballet school. When her teacher Mr Coudepier tells her she can no longer attend class, she wonders off on her own. Loosely based on the life and achievements of Isadora Duncan, the founder of Modern Dance, this is book that will encourage young readers to think about their own aspirations, their self-image and how important it is to know oneself and pursue one’s dreams. A book about childhood memories, about family relationships, and all those things that make each house a home. A house stands for that familiar place we all carry within us, which allows us to dream and look out to the world.
I had a dream that grandpa and I went to get ice cream, without telling anyone. It was winter, but grandpa knew an ice-cream shop that was open. On the way we saw a beautiful dog and grandpa said: “Come and join us!” I led the way and grandpa followed with the dog. But when we got to the shop, we found the ice-cream man in tears. A wind had blown, like the warm breath of a giant, and had melted all the ice cream. We headed back. But grandpa had forgotten where our home was and so had I. A book that introduces difficult concepts such as alzheimer’s disease and the death of a loved one, to young children. But it is also about the power of memory, the comfort offered us by a loving family and how we keep on cherishing favorite childhood memories long after we ceased to be children. Once upon an unfamiliar time, when neither you nor I were born, there lived in a sunlit kingdom King Never-Travel and his beautiful queen Forget-Me- Not. The queen loved her husband dearly and shared life with him in peace. Forget-Me-Not had only one unfulfilled wish and would, from time to time, ask the king gently “My lord and master, come, let’s go outside! Let’s get out of these gates at last and enjoy the lake, the mountain, and the forest!” A beautiful picture book which tells the story of a King who embarks on a quest to find his beloved Queen, but in truth, is a journey of self knowledge.
