01 design research The Intersectionality of Sheltering at home and Aging in Place: How neuroaesthetics impact our health and wellbeing

As our world navigates through a global pandemic, families and designers have been forced to reconsider the single-family home we once recognized. While the country redefines our new “normal, designers are tasked with the challenge to design a space that meets the needs of staying, working, and healing at home as it coincides with the previous, ever- traditional aging in place residential design model.

Textile Specification Specializing in sustainable design, textile designer Caroline Kaufman uses recycled yarns to create her organic, abstract rugs. Intentional about sustainability, Caroline specifies natural fibers such as wool and cotton and uses natural dye process to color the yarns.

What is Neuroaesthetics? Neuroaesthetics studies how our perceptions, thoughts, and emotions are dependent on and shaped by our interactions with the environment. The study of neuroaesthetics aims to quantify human perception, an experience that has always been considered abstract and intangible. Studied widely in the healthcare design industry, well designed spaces are proven to initiate response and encourage healing. However, in a global pandemic these ideologies are quickly redefined, as “shelter at home orders have suspended our ability to interact. Between staying at home and aging in place, these ideologies that were once only present in healthcare, can now be placed at the forefront of residential design. This on-going prototype aims to address the intersectionality of sheltering at home and aging in place. The design analyzes the comfort, safety and ergonomics of our home as these elements relate to our productivity and ability to heal both mentally and physically.

Key Characteristics The kitchen design uses natural light to brighten the enclosure and maintain bacteria and microorganisms. Large sliding doors add ventilation to the space while evoking environmental interaction. A warm, neutral color palette depicts security and harmony, while contrasting vibrant green hues help with acuity loss in elderly home owners. Countertops are specified to meet requirements, measuring 36 inches high.

Work From Home Accessory Dwelling Unit Situated in the backyard of the home, the Work From Home Accessory Dwelling Unit provides residents with the ability to physically and mentally remove themselves from the main living quarters. The curved wood slat wall mimics the trunk and branches of a tree, as to not take away from the natural landscape of the property. A partial partition wall secludes the work desk from the rest of the unit, creating space for recreational use.

Inspiration Inspired by Italianate architecture, Bianca’s design uses mirrored archways and curvilinear form to both accentuate and add depth to the space. Specifically, Bianca’s bar area uses contrast and form to pay homage to traditional Renaissance architecture, while still maintaining its’ own individualized and modern aesthetic.

From booth-style nook seating to open concept lounge seating, Bianca’s open furniture plan allows community members to seat themselves in whichever seating arrangements best suits them and their party. Although an illusion, the addition of mirrored archways helps to expand the space while alluding to the Italianate aesthetic of the space.

Textile Specification Located in a city recognized for its art-filled streets and historic background, the implementation of rich design history was important in the overall success of the design. The textiles specified represent organic modernism, employing the simplistic principles of modernism while still evoking warmth and comfort with their asymmetrical, organic structures. Attentive to textile specification, the design features two Maharam textiles designed by Charles and Ray Eames. Famously recognized for their innovative furniture and textile designs, these textiles pay tribute to the impactful qualities of their artwork and designs.

Reflected Ceiling Plan After further researching the infrastructure and geographical features of Austin, the Colorado River, which runs through the heart of the city, instantly became a focal point. A simple tracing of the river created the basis for the ceiling design. The Colorado River quickly became inspiration for multiple aspects of this design, including the rippling wood slats and flowing wayfinding.

Floor Plan In order to incorporate biophilic design in an abstract way, both the floor and reflected ceiling plans represent the natural curves found in nature. They feel seemingly organic and fluid, as the client eases their way into the space.

A Holistic Approach to Healthcare : Biophilic Design The incorporation of natural, raw materials coincides with nature-evoking patterns, textures, and colors to create a harmonious, biophilic environment that naturally detoxifies the negative energy one may experience upon their arrival to the traditional dentist office. Through extensive research, elements of nature act as a distraction to reduce pain. Likewise, these elements are stress-reducing and promote well-being and faster recovery for patients. Despite restrictions on adding physical greenery to the space, abstraction in pattern design, form and color can be used to encompass many natural landscapes and vegetation.

The brushing station, located directly next to the pediatric bay, was designed to provide an educational experience for the young patients of Optimal Dental. Adjacent to the pediatric waiting area, family members are invited to join in the experience, providing an ease of nerves to these young, new patients.
