KPS Commissioner Motivation Letter
03/04/2015
Dear organisations, KPS commissioner and Friends, I am Alexander Hili, currently in my 3rd year reading for a Degree in Science (B.Sc Biology and Chemistry) at the University of Malta, and I am writing this motivation letter as part of my bid for the role of Social Policy Commissioner in the KSU Executive 15/16. Why do I run for KPS commissioner? I have a dream, I have a dream to see our campus packed with active students. Students who do not come to university just for the lecture and run back home. My dream is to see students, work together, study together and relax together hence forming a community. My dream is to see our students represented nationally, and heard internationally, and thus making the student a force to be reckoned with, and not a mere tool to be exploited by the authorities. When debates happen on campus, I don’t want to see them happening in an empty arena. I want to see dozens of people gather and discuss, talk and debate. Currently, whenever a debate is organised on campus, you always get to see the same handful of students. Isn’t it ironic that the voice of the students is always from the same few who make their voice heard? Isn’t anticlimactic when our sports teams compete for us, they only have the support of a few friends? We are thousands strong at our university, yet only a few hundred are known to be active students who nestle a feeling of belonging to our institution. Why run for KPS commissioner? This is because I believe this is the role that can reach out to most students at their heart and get them on board. Giving them a space to create, giving them the power to act. Teaching them the importance of being an active member of our community though their actions. It is only together, hand in hand, that we can make our voice be heard. This is because only together as one student body, we can make a chance in our society. This dream, however will not be possible unless we all work together towards it. You all know the potential that KSU has, yet I learnt this year that KSU needs the organisations to work with it, as one team, one student body. If it isn’t for all the organisations working together, pushing forward to make this happen it will not be possible. I am just one person, one human being, and even though I have done a lot in my life and will keep doing my best and if given the chance to be the KPS Commissioner I will give it my all. This year I had the pleasure to work with Becky and Andrew numerous times, and I can tell you first hand that the amount of work they did was extraordinary. Yet, if it wasn’t for us, the student organisations who helped them out. Organising, using the KSU as a tool that allowed us to boost our events/campaigns/activities beyond what we would have achieved on our own.

With this said, I would like to invite you to look at my action plan and the course of action that I will pursue if I am elected into this role. I believe that my extensive experience, coupled with my unique thought process and undying passion make me an ideal candidate for this position. My goal is to see a community of active students at the University of Malta. If that is not a dream worth fighting for, I do not know what is! Yours Sincerely, Alexander Hili Alexanderhili1993@gmail.com 99931803

PAST EXPERIENCE: My dream alone would not make me eligible for such an important post, thus I will bring to the table all of my knowledge, experience and energy that I have managed to cultivate in the past five years of rigours training, working with different organisations and being an outspoken member of society while always working towards representing those around me and their ideals.
Mini European Assembly (MEA) My journey started with my experience in the Mini European Assembly (MEA) an experience which helped me learn and develop my opinion. As part of my input I to draft a report on religious symbols and Europe’s stance which taught me the importance of the EU to Malta and how policies passed abroad have an incredible impact on our society. From there I boosted my experience in MEA, by becoming a mentor. This is something which I have been doing almost every year since allowing me to learn how to work with groups, and how to share the knowledge which I had gained though my previous experiences and workshops.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN TRANSATLANTIC FELLOWSHIP. (BFTF) This is when I had the honour and absolute pleasure of representing Malta in the BFTF 2011 program. This is the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic fellowship which is a training program for young leaders from all over Europe and the USA. This programme is based on how young leaders can hone their leadership skills, while at the same time learning how different parts of our society worked. The workshops covered Social policy, Media and the biases of filming, understanding the important of constitutions to our society and debating skills in the form of a very intensive six hour scenario conflict resolution. However, it was the cultural richness of people from 42 nationalities that was the most important thing that influenced me. The differences in ideologies, religious beliefs, and cultural habits of each and every single person changed me for ever. From this experience I developed a sense of global citizenship, something which has allowed me to look at problems often from unconventional yet effective stances. I realised more than ever that conflict of beliefs and a well-balanced society are not mutually exclusive and living in a multicultural society is very important to the development of the person.
SCIENCE STUDENTS SOCIETY (S-CUBED) On returning to Malta, I entered university, and I soon found myself highly involved with student organisations especially with the Science Student society, or better known as SCubed. For the past four years I have willingly given my time and energy to the development of this organisation as part of the executive board in these past two years I was holding the post of Student Relations Officer and currently Vice-President.

As the student relations officer I leant how the KPS works since part of my duties was to attend and work with the KPS office in the name of S-Cubed. I also made a large number of connections with other organisations, by attending various education events on campus. My work as student relations officer, was mostly aimed at collecting feedback from students and seeing what they wanted from their organisation. I was also in charge of Share !T, a concept I created the year before as a subcommittee member. Share !T was aimed at creating a space for students, at our university to be able to speak about science freely while nurturing their skills of presentation in front of an audience of students. When I was elected as the Vice-President, of S-Cubed the year after my role changed drastically, I not only had to learn how to delegate my work to others, but also had to make sure that the team was functioning properly. Working with our President and the executive we were able to give one of the best years that S-Cubed ever saw, with all of our offices producing large amounts of high-calibre events. I was also in charge of organising Science in the City 2014, SiTC, a representative from S-Cubed where I was working directly with Dr Edward Duca, who is one of the main coordinators of SiTC. This gave me an insight on how large scale events are run, while learning the logistics and planning of materials needed, as well training and organising a large number of students and leaders in different areas. As most of you are aware, the event was a massive success with over 25 000 attendees a social media following and media coverage it being followed over the social media and media but a much large percentage. I also worked on Project Alpha, another concept which S-Cubed brought forward, which tackled the fact that at University students do not get any incentives to produce their own projects. Thus as S-Cubed we presented a small fund for students to apply for. This fund allowed the students to build projects outside their class rooms using the knowledge which they had accumulated, during their course. Apart from these two massive projects, as VP it has been my pleasure to represent S-Cubed along with our President at events organised by other organisations. I have been to admin and KPS forums so as to keep myself updated, as well ensure representation for S-Cubed.
INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Adding to my international portfolio, I was also selected for the YLTE, which is Youth Leaders for Tomorrows Europe, which allowed me to come in contact with a large group of individuals and discuss policies that the EU should take on the conflicts related to its borders. This opportunity permitted me to learn about the various situations that Europe is facing and how policies to deal with our neighbours are formed. This while making valuable contacts with trainers and highly influential individuals.

CONCLUSION: These are just some of the projects I have worked on, implemented and saw to their made sure to succeed. Those of you know me can vouch that I am hard working and dependable, and will always do everything that is in my power to make something happen. From the experience that I have presented to you, I hope you can see the energy and experience that I can bring forward. With that said, those that do not know me, it would be my pleasure to meet with you, so please do feel free to contact me at any point in time and we can discuss anything and everything.
