Dear organisations, KPS commissioner, and Friends, I am Alexander Hili, currently in my 1st year reading for a Degree in European Studies with Communications at the University of Malta, and I am writing this motivation letter as part of my bid for the role of Social Policy Commissioner in the KSU Executive 16/17. Why am I running for KPS commissioner? Excuse the clichĂŠ, but I believe I can make a difference. I know I have a lot to offer, I have experience, I have knowledge and I have the passion needed. Last year I stood before you and showed you what I believe in and what I wanted to improve. This year I stand again here asking you for your support. Not for me but for my ideas, and for our University. I believe this is the role which reaches students the most. This role can give them a space to be creative, gives them the power to act, and gives them the tools to be an active member of our community, and through their actions make a change. It is only together, hand in hand, that we can make our voice heard and as one student body, we can make a change in our society. KSU has the potential to a inspire change, we just need to make use of it. I am just one person, and even though I have done a lot I will never be able to do enough and that is why we have to work together. This year I had the pleasure to work with a large number of you numerous times as part of a subcommittee, helping out in projects or even just participating in your events. I know and understand the effort that goes into every event that occurs. I know what it takes to get an idea off the ground and I know the pride one takes in seeing it grow into something that is appreciated. This is why I am running-because I have been through this before. I have had many successful projects but just as many disasters, and I have learnt through time and practice what it takes to really make things work. My passion is university, my goal is the students and with this said, I would like to invite you to look at my action plan and the course of action that I will pursue if I am elected into this role. I believe that my extensive experience, coupled with my unique thought process and undying passion make me an ideal candidate for this position. My goal is to see a community of active students at the University of Malta. If that is not a dream worth fighting for, I do not know what is! Yours Sincerely, Alexander Hili Alexanderhili1993@gmail.com +356 9993 1803

PAST EXPERIENCE: Words alone will not make one believe in me, hence this is a short missive on my past and current work that I have carried out in student organisations.
Mini European Assembly (MEA) My journey started with my experience in the Mini European Assembly (MEA). As part of my input I had to draft a report on religious symbols and Europe’s stance which taught me the importance of the EU to Malta and how policies passed abroad have an incredible impact on our society. From there I boosted my experience in MEA, by becoming a mentor. This is something which I have been doing almost every year since, allowing me to learn how to work with groups, and how to share the knowledge which I had gained though my previous experiences and workshops.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN TRANSATLANTIC FELLOWSHIP. (BFTF) This is when I had the honour and absolute pleasure of representing Malta in the BFTF 2011 program. This is the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic fellowship which is a training program for young leaders from all over Europe and the USA. This programme is based on how young leaders can hone their leadership skills, while at the same time learn how different parts of our society worked. The workshops covered Social policy; Media and the bases of filming; understanding the importance of constitutions in our society; and debating skills in the form of a very intensive six hour scenario conflict resolution. From this experience I developed a sense of global citizenship, something which has allowed me to look at problems often from unconventional yet effective stances. I realised more than ever that conflict of beliefs and a well-balanced society are not mutually exclusive and living in a multicultural society is very important to the development of the person.
SCIENCE STUDENTS SOCIETY (S-CUBED) On returning to Malta, I entered university, and I soon found myself highly involved with student organisations especially with the Science Student society, or better known as SCubed. For four years I willingly gave my time and energy to the development of this organisation, and I held the post of Student Relations Officer and subsequently VicePresident. As the student relations officer I leant how the KPS works since part of my duties were to attend and work with the KPS office in the name of S-Cubed. I also made a large number of connections with other organisations, by attending various education events on campus. My work as student relations officer, was mostly aimed at collecting feedback from students and seeing what they wanted from their organisation. I was also in charge of Share !T, a concept I created the year before as a subcommittee member. Share !T was aimed at creating a space for students, at our university to be able to speak about science freely while nurturing their skills of presentation in front of an audience of students. 2|Page Alexanderhili1993@gmail.com +356 99931803
Motivational Letter Sunday, 17 April 2016 When I was elected as the Vice-President, of S-Cubed the year after my role changed drastically, I not only had to learn how to delegate my work to others, but also had to make sure that the team was functioning properly. Working with our President and the executive we were able to give one of the best years that S-Cubed ever saw, with all of our offices producing large amounts of high-calibre events. I was also in charge of organising Science in the City 2014, SiTC, as a representative from SCubed where I was working directly with Dr Edward Duca, who is one of the main coordinators of SiTC. I also worked on Project Alpha, another concept which S-Cubed brought forward, which tackled the fact that at University students do not get any incentives to produce their own projects. Thus as S-Cubed we presented a small fund for students to apply for. This fund allowed the students to build projects outside their classrooms using the knowledge which they had accumulated during their course. Apart from these two massive projects, as VP it was my pleasure to represent S-Cubed along with our President at events organised by other organisations.
Erasmus Student Network In this organisation I started working on a local basis where I occupied the role of President for a few short months. In those months I worked alongside the team to get a large number of sponsorships. However my main involvement has been with the International Committee for Education where I was able to help out in the promotion of various educational actives and trips that occur throughout Europe. I have been on trips to Dublin which allowed me to see how a startup company starts from nothing to become one of the largest international hosting companies in a study trip with AirBNB as well as working with a number of internationals that helped me to understand the same issue from different perspectives according to where they come from Europe.
INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Adding to my international portfolio, I was also selected for the YLTE, which is Youth Leaders for Tomorrow’s Europe, which allowed me to come in contact with a large group of individuals and discuss policies that the EU should take on the conflicts related to its borders. This opportunity permitted me to learn about the various situations that Europe is facing and how policies to deal with our neighbours are formed. This while making valuable contacts with trainers and highly influential individuals.

Draw the Line Campaign: For this campaign I worked with a team that focused on the creation of a policy paper that tackles the problem of bullying. Working as a part of the subcommittee under KSU I was able to help organise and complete the research and analysis of the study that was carried out by SDM. We came to a number of conclusions which allowed us to propose changes on a national level. This was not to be focused simply on primary and secondary schools however our research would be based on post-secondary and university students. Giving us a chance to propose changes to the system in areas previously ignored. I would like to invite you to read the final work thought this link.
CONCLUSION: These are just some of the projects I have worked on, implemented and saw through to make sure they succeed. Those of you who know me can vouch that I am hard working and dependable, and will always do everything that is in my power to make something happen.
From the experience that I have presented to you, I hope you can see the energy and experience that I can bring forward. With that said, for those that do not know me, it would be my pleasure to meet with you, so please do feel free to contact me at any point in time and we can discuss anything and everything.
