Figheadaireachd Performance Notes Figheadaireachd (FEE-uh-der-acht) was written in Bawley Point, New South Wales in June of 2019 for the Canberra Youth Orchestra. The title is a Scottish Gaelic word meaning ‘weaving’, and refers to the ways in which the instrumental parts interact with each other and weave their way through a series of shifting and overlapping harmonic contexts. The pitch content is based on the harmonic series of 5 sequential fundamentals – each lasting roughly one minute, and one page of the full score. A performance should last five minutes, but can be scaled as needed, increasing the duration of the measures from 15” to any uniform length. Musicians may use timepieces in performance in lieu of a conductor, whose main role in performance is to keep track of time and cue the start of each measure. A final short hold/fermata and diminuendo in the final measure is permitted. All vibrato should be avoided throughout by all musicians. A relatively quiet dynamic should be observed throughout. Players should use the rhythmic content is each measure as a guide, and need not coordinate exactly with other musicians on the same part. Players may breathe and re-take bows as needed to sustain for the notated relative durations, and effort should be made to avoid silence across the bar lines, which are purely for organisational purposes. Each string section is divided into three parts (e.g. Violin 1A, 1B and 1C). The number of players on each of these three parts should be as equal as possible.
