BROKEN BOOKS Broken Books is about creating fresh boundaries. The Indie Bookstore + Cafe is a collaborative yet contemplative environment that encourages forward thinking. The site, located in Champaign IL., is surrounded by abandoned buildings with concrete blocks for windows and walls supported by ivy. This cold industrial feel inspired the bookstores brutalist concrete shell. The concrete frame creates a boundary and upon entering the patron is encompassed by a large covered courtyard that welcomes the southern sun. Within the glowing interior there are a number of workspaces for collaboration or individual study. The lower level provides a bookstore, printing area, and back of house space, while the upper level offers a public cafe, lounging areas, and catwalk. The Indie Bookstore offers individuals a visually stimulating space with undulating book stacks, elevated perspectives, and peculiar volumes to create a unique experience.
SLIGHTLY TILTED
Slightly Tilted is a farmers market and community gathering space located in the city of Champaign, IL. The market is a dynamic environment that encourages movement by the customers. The tangled facade with its forest of pillars captures the attention to the West, while the gradual smooth sloping roof entices anyone coming from East. As you come closer to the building a beautiful green roof extrudes from the ground. The extrusion promotes exploration from its inhabitants, but remains a relaxed environment for onlookers. Upon entering the building the space remains lively with the ample amount of natural light flooding in through the floor to ceiling windows. The descending floor reflects the shape of the building and pushes people down into the farmers market. The markets stalls align along the descending path and persuade the customer to enter into the stalls. As people make their way deeper underground they are inclined to begin the climb back to natural light, thus creating a loop. Overall, the tilts and shifts in elevation promote exploration, while equally providing a space for leisure. The building entertains the viewer visually and physically and creates an exciting environment for all.

Axial Flow offers professors a private living area, kitchen, living room, studio and outdoor spaces. The project was conceptualized when two major axis of the park along with the sloping landscape were connected. The residence offers a retreat from the hectic world and creates a connection to the landscape.
