WATERLOO 200th ANNIVERSARY
A
‘Napoleonville comes to life’
s the 200th anniversary of the Waterloo Battle approaches, the plan to reconstruct ‘Napoleonville’ is coming to life. Culture Espace, a French company, has obtained the contract to reconstruct and develop ‘Napoleonville’ and the surrounding tourist attractions. The goal is to increase the location’s potential up to 300,000 visitors per year. The Waterloo battle is still considered one of the most important battles in the European history, as it represented the end of more than 20 years of disagreement. It is vital for us to know our history, because it represents the core of our culture, perceptions and beliefs. It is just as important for each event to be remembered and celebrated properly, so that its importance is not forgotten.
The ‘Napoleonville’ is currently missing a vital element, without which the event can’t be appreciated to its full potential. Where you can find ‘proud and prominent’ memorials of the Dutch, Belgians, French and Prussians, the battlefield has no remembrance whatsoever of the British soldiers that fought and were responsible for the win. This creates a severe lack of originality and content, misrepresenting the event to those that are not informed enough. The British soldiers deserve to be recognised for the sacrifice they put on that “wet meadow”. A partnership has been settled with the Belgian authorities in order for this mistake to be rectified.
