OVERVIEW

The natural areas at the outskirts of cities have a strategical value. “Nonurban” is a territory with a potential for transformation which should be protected as well as activated. Defining the functional limits betwe en urban and a mainly natural environment plays a crucial role in shaping points of connection, through lasting strategies, in becoming access points betwe en locations of culture, leasure, relaxation or sports, thus creating “macroparks” designed at a regional scale. The „Repedea” Plateau and Geological and Paleontological Reserve, located in the „Pietraria” village, Iasi County - is a natural heritage area of national interest , included on UNESCO lists, an important touristic center of the city and county of Iasi, currently found in an advanced state of neglect and decay. The idea for the project started from the wish to discover the site. The objective of the intervention is to emphasize a national natural heritage monument, descovering the essence of the place through enriching the circumstances. The operative strategy is more important than the actual design.

PR OGR AM

OVERVIEW

Media Library & Museum of Moving Images

Intending to re structure the area in the vicinity of the old railway station of Filaret in Bucharest, Romania, the project creates a new secondary centre, as an instrument for the decongestion of the actual centre of the city. On a territorial scale the proposal starts with the creation of a pedestrian route, that has a new urban square as its initial point. The new square gathers around major new public buildings: the media museum, the library and the old sta tion converted into an auditorium.

flower market

new city

OVERVIEW

The Flower Market was the first Market in Bucharest, located at the crossroad of the most important streets of the old town. In the 1960’s the Flower Market is decomissioned, and the area transformed into an urban square, in the context of the archaeological researches in the area. In the 1980’s the area is restructured during the development of the New Civic Center of the Communist Regime. This is the period of the addition of the concrete wall residential development, that blocked the opening of the square towards the main circulation artery, transforming the previous square into a forgotten space behind the residential constructions. The empty space is now used as a parking lot, and for garbage storage; in short this space is dead - despite its’ proximity to the old city, which enjoys a protected-area status.

High-Rise Offices TUTOR

Stefan Scafa DUR ATION

2 Months DATE

February 2011

OVERVIEW

According to statistics, during the 8-9 hours of work-time, people spend 35% of that time outside the office. So the need to create spaces that the employee could use to improve their performance arrises. What if those space could also be used by the general public? The design ideea for the high rise office bulding was to try and break the monotony of a generic office building in a way that would relate to the si te, and to the need to supply the city with public space and and public functions. Besides the considerations regarding the energy efficiency of the building, the idea was to create a mixed use building - offices intertwinig with public spaces and green spaces. The public functions always have a corresponding exterior space. In this way a spiral of public spaces and vertical gardens is created inside the building.

\ 061

t he si te

The site is located in a destructuralised area on the left bank of Dambovita river, near the center of Bucharest, in the place a former, now disabled, industrial complex. The site’s very good connection with the rest of the city and the proximity to the river makes it a good location for a high density urban development, that could become the financial heart of the city.

OVERVIEW

CULTURAL CENTRE

The fundamental trait of the urban fabric of Bucharest is “transparency“. This is given by the blending of the buildt with the unbuilt, from which overlappings of visual layers emerge. The void, or the space “in between“ has theoreticaly the origin there, where the conditions are imprecise, ambiguous, confuse.

TUTOR

Stefan Scafa DUR ATION

2 Months DATE

February 2010

The eclectic nature of the city, the rapid overlapping of urban layers gave birth to these spaces which, are not residual, but substantial spaces that do not separate but link the various urban elements between them: the interior courtyard, the portico, the passage, the crossing. The project was generated by the reiteration of all these typologies of public/semi-public space, by the idea of continuity by change, through the reinterpretation of the old urban fabric.

The selected program- centre for visual arts- has the purpose of acting as an activator for the whole area. The

compact volumes obtained through the extruding of the old urban plots, are then sculpted by the public, unbuilt space,

therefore resulting an intertwining of void and volumes, old and new, trough the creation of controled views ( the old city is

left visible or hidden). It results in this way a coherent ansamble of a series of volumes linked through the spaces in between.

Terraced Houses

OVERVIEW

The TERRACED HOUSES offer a relatively simple and interesting model, both spatially and functionally.

TUTOR

Mircea Ochinciuc

The minimal lot with dimensions of 7,5m facing the street, and 25m depth, is considered to be a flat surface.

DUR ATION

2 Months DATE

Spring 2008

My idea was to create diversity within a rather monotonuos street front. I wanted at the same time to bring nature inside the house. All of this lead to the strip of green space (flower garden, vegetable garden) that enters the space of the house, being both public and private. Each family will have the posibility to personalize their garden, creating a diverse image of the street.

OVERVIEW

Bicycle parking

The task was to create a simple covered space with no given function. It was compulsory to use a wood structure and simple geometries. The function of the covered space was at the choice of the student. My idea was to explore a very simple function and a versatile but structural material - wood.

TUTOR

Dan Marin DUR ATION

2 Months DATE

Winter 2006

Starting from my function of choice, the bicycle parking, the formal concept evolved. The module used is not structural on its own. The repetition of the module creates the structure, and also fullfills the function. The entire object becomes in this way structural and functional.
