THE GRID
LETTERFORMS
This is the study and design of individual letters that represent the theme of this book: paths. Each letter was created on a square grid. Inspiration came from constellation maps where you can see lines connected by dots. Here curved and straight lines were created to make the shape of each letter with the thought of simplifying and emphasizing where it’s mostly essential. Finally, dots were added to accentuate that thought.

BITMAP MONTAGE
06
The bitmap effect became popular during the late 50’s. Artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol used this effect quite often on their designs. A bitmap imitates a silk printing screen, it simplifies an image by creating dots, the more value there is on an image, the more dots you will see. This effect is now accomplished by bringing your image to Adobe Photoshop. The main goal is to simplify your image as much as possible so the dots can show the value of your image.

PATTERNS
Patterns are often repetitions of lines, shapes or other elements. We can often see them in nature through the spirals of a flower, waves of the sea and the cracks on soil. Nature indeed inspired these patterns about paths. I wanted to get really close and focus on little details, then step back and think about different angles, like a landscape. These patterns emulate nature’s beautiful paths.

TYPE COMPOSITION

Paths | Type Composition
Playing with type helps us create interesting compositions when we think of hierarchy and flow. Think of this composition as a bird’s-eye view of land. We see a great number of things when we’re up on an airplane and I wanted to capture the essence of that. Rivers, farmed land, bodies of water, etc.
PHOTOGRAPHY
14 Photography is a great medium to capture ideas. We see paths almost everywhere in nature. If you look closer on a leave you can see how its veins look like rivers, in wood you can see the numerous layers of growth that look similar to the sea. Termites and ants create their own cities, which looks like something out of this world.

PAPER COMPOSITION
For this paper composition i thought of the numerous paths a city has. Parisian streets have an interesting flow of different paths. Paris is full of big avenues and narrow alleys, the Seine river divides half of the city and seen from an aerial view seems like a beautiful maze. For this piece I was inspired by japanese cut out designs, I used an exacto knife to cut away the city for the outcome to be the multiple paths in this city.

INFOGRAPHIC

Another way to find paths is by looking at the sky. Constellations were named many years ago and every culture had their own names for them. A constellation is the combination of stars, an imaginary line is traced to visualize this. This infographic shows the great constellation of Orion and other constellations around it. As humans we try to relate to everything we see so we trace lines to paint a picture and make up stories.

IDENTITY
An identity communicates the essential core of an idea. A logo mark is also part of an identity. This logo was created to symbolize paths, which is the name of this book. Paths are lines traced by humans or natural forces such as rivers or animal migrations. The idea was to trace simple lines that would make a path. The main color is a french kraft paper color that is used to represent nature, the color of sand or soil that we see on a path.

ENVIROMENTAL GRAPHIC

A gallery event was launched to showcase this book and other art pieces. These posters were created to invite everyone to the opening night. The posters show some of the elements of this book with the gallery name and the date. They were placed in billboards, bus stops and train stations around the Bay Area.

WEBSITE

Websites are essentials in today’s world. Therefore, a website was also created to showcase some of the work and to create awareness about the event. The landing page shows a slideshow of some of the art pieces and if you scroll down you can see pictures of the book. Visitors are also able to purchase a copy of the book through the site. This way “paths” will exist in the event, the book and in the virtual world.
