MANIFESTO Inspired by arty magazines like Frankie, Yen Magazine and creative journals alike, ideas quickly flew in when I stumbled upon Australia’s leading free fashion publication - ‘Fashion Journal’. Fashion Journal delivers tomorrow’s trends now and for free all the while keeping readers updated with news on both the local and international fashion, retail and beauty scenes. As it can be seen on all of the Fashion Journal’s front covers; there is only imagery. Influenced by tactile typography, I decided to create three special edition covers that highlight a trend - denim, suede & metallic. In a typeface which characterises each trend - each word is subtracted from the front cover to reveal the tangible material of the trend. These issues will serve as special editions.

PRODUCTION

With my idea to cut out the type, I attempted to do so with a modelling knife. Although I tried to do this with precision, it did not produce the clean-cut look that I was after.


I then inquired about laser cutting at a local business, however, it was way to expensive. During the class critique, I was informed that there was a laser cutting facility on campus. I met up with the Tech officer and discussed the process - it was quite simple. I set up the documents to comply with the laser machines settings and the results were fast and successful.
