T

HE CURRENT CRAZE for “native” plants bespeaks an undercurrent of malaise about environmental

collapse. They cross over in a Venn diagram with “weeds,” which, as Google tells us, are simply plants that grow in the wrong place. Weeds, in turn, are the lure of bees and other pollinators that, we are told, hold the key to our salvation. The linkages from microscopic to macroscopic form the mesh of nature that demands nothing less than our creative notice—the province of art.

H

OW AND WHY and where we classify plants as undesirable is part of the story of our ceaseless

attempt to draw boundaries between nature and culture, wildness and domestication. And how intelligently and generously we draw those lines determines the character of most of the green surfaces of the planet. — Richard Mabey, Weeds: In Defense of Nature’s Most Unloved Plants
