Ways of life The international competition «Schindler Global Award». Sao Paulo

The project emphasizes the mobility systems and the future development of one of the most significant cities in Latin America. Sao Paulo, while being the biggest city in South America, has a particular and diverse culture, which spreads from the inherited European traditions to the varies local identities. The proposed site is located at the market territory – CEAGESP, in the west part of the city. The decision was made by the government to remove the market because of the traffic problems and pollution it causes. The project itself has been developed during three main stages – Research, Competition Submission, and the Academic Submission; all these stages are presented in this workbook. During the phase of the Research, a lot of problems were identified, which are typical for the

city of this scale – social segregation, traffic jams, high level of crime; these directions also became a basis for the further thoughts. The first steps to the design process started on the small scale, the seed, which grew an inspiration for the new development of the site. During the next steps, the project was developed from the small scale to the urban concept, which includes various stages and scenarios of how the territory should look like in the future. The representation of Sao Paulo as the “City of Walls” became a starting point for this project. To overcome the segregation and alienation between people and to solve the traffic problems, the city should provide more opportunities for the pedestrians and offer more space for interactions. During the

research three main directions were highlighted - the mobility issues, the social aspects and the quality of life. The project proposes better integration of the CEAGESP wholesale market site into the city fabric and the creation of the high quality urban spaces while offering a new mobility concept, which is based on the spot’s network and the new typologies of the streets – Low Speed (pedestrian priority), Medium Speed (soft mobility) and High Speed streets (car priority). These streets form the new modes of development and directly influence the typologies of the buildings. The project also aims to provide mixed usage and to extend the public spaces inside the premises through the terraces, common areas and creation of the Interaction Core.

Six clusters form space structure. The site area includes 1100 ha and consists of 14 parcels (total area 450 ha). The first site cluster is proposed to be a hotel and business center, which connects the new district with the city.

The project of the ice rink with curling. Transformation and extension of the bath complex.

The building is located between the natural landscape and urban area. This project reacts to this collision as a front on the street side and opens to the park side by terraces. The critical part of the design was to integrate the existing outdoor pool into a new complex. This project can be described as a basement - terraces, providing views to the different activities of the site, and light roof, situated in the north part. This roof covers the «ice» functions: curling and ice rink itself. Basement, pylons, and roof organize the existing construction system. It has a raster net of 4.8 meters. This construction principle is taken as a regular composition of bath complex, service areas, ice rink and technical locals.

The construction of the roof is a tube framework that develops in three dimensions. The system, which was used, is called «KK-Kugelknoten». The roof leans on the concrete pylons, fixed in two spots: ground floor and terrace level. The suspended ceiling is made of wood that complies acoustic needs and creates a warm atmosphere. The material, which was chosen for the facades, is polycarbonate. It allows to unite the volumes, gives them a minimalistic form and creates spectacular light effects in the interior space. The choice of colors for the structural elements embodies the temperature conditions of respective functions. Many spaces offer multifunctional usage. For example, the ice rink can be used for exhibitions or concerts;

Sunbeams The wellness center project in the low city of Fribourg, an extension of the Motta bath.

This project, at first, is focused on the ambiance and the quality of interior spaces. The challenge was to start with an atmospheric image. That required to make a choice of materials and begin to work on the project in full entirety. Sarine river, in the law city, is a spectacular event. Unfortunately, the district around the Motta bath is not providing an urban link to the river. The access to this part of the city is chaotic and has no hierarchy. The aim of the project was a creation of new meeting space, a real reception place. The cafe-bar, which is situated on the ground level, will animate this area. Principal functions, hammam, and wellness center are placed on the low level. Visitors will go down along the

river and discover the walking path, which is connected to the Sarine river. The inside itinerary overthinks the bending course of the river. It will go up and down. Through multiple openings, many visual connections between interior and exterior spaces will be provided. The building appearance looks for the similitude with the retaining wall. Raw material will give more importance to the incorporated reflecting particles - the sunbeams.

The difficulty of the task was to work with different functions and to combine them. The chosen solution for this project was to mix three functions in the same big building. We called it - the machine. The problem that engrosses us was to show different relations, as well as the interior footage of individual interior spaces.

In this part, the facade is made from metal laminates, which merge the hole center and intensify the industrial look of the area.

The new building aims to give back a fresh breath to this area. The project is related to the significant central buildings of the city. The building takes its place in the urban density and generates a marketplace, the new center of the quiet part of Fribourg. The project would also connect both sides of the river and propose to make the Fribourg beach on the other bank.

The place, the repetitions rooms that transform into a small concert hall, as well as the main hall, will more animate the «calm» part of Fribourg.

The project of Sberbank center is the extreme district of technologiccity of Skolkovo. It has four principal functional areas. Office center, conference center, parking (hub) and the recreation zone. The west part of the site is situated near the motorway. Two sections of parking are used as a buffer zone. It’s also a place for changing the means of transport. Skolkovo-city is eco-friendly and has no diesel cars. In the second part are parked electric cars, Segways, and bikes. Two parallel streets are generating the site. One of them is a walkway, along which the office functional zone is located. Works spaces are situated on 2nd and 3rd floors and are connected with bridges. The first floor is a public zone, and each building provides many entrances. A

big cafeteria with the terrace in the center of the office area is a global meeting point. The walkway ends with the «big boss» tower, situated at the visual junction of the central axis. From the tower, over the significant boulevard of Skolkovo, we can reach the conference center. The bridge is used as the bar and produces the animation at the entrance of Sberbank office center. Conference building is an «icon» type building in the form of the stylized bank logo. The round shape is also the integral object in Skolkovo-city planning. In the building are situated conference rooms, restaurant, conservatory and lecture hall. On the roof of the building, the place with significant steps will attract people by the good weather for an open-

The project is located in the old city of Fribourg in the classified building. The exercise aimed to propose a restaurant or a cafe and to keep apart for housing. It was essential to concentrate on the technical and economic ends; also the atmosphere was very significant. We made calculations, proposed some offers, brought samples and prepared the expertise file. The jury was composed not only of our construction and design professors but also from professional victuallers. Our team decided to keep the ground floor for the housing, and inclined to use the traditional solution in this region - cave project. The idea was to design a degustation shop, where the first kitchen and products will be prepared in a different place, in the suburbs. This decision allowed

saving a lot of money. Thereby, the restaurant project can be used as a cellar. After studying old plans, I understood, that three different houses composed the building. Each house had its stairs, so we found a hidden one. That let us divide clients and residents flows. That was also the cheapest solution that allowed excluding complicated construction works. The jury approved this procedure and distinguished the project. The proposed design was minimalistic and had just indispensable interventions. We also choose colors, lights, and equipment. Furthermore, we designed furniture and made a 1:1 model for our modular unit.

The first part is the construction design: the jazz festival stand, interview stand, and Russian mountains. The stand design won during the semester and was rebuild with three others for the Willisau Jazz Festival. The interview stand, also a team-project that was selected and rebuild for the TV presentation. I participated in both cases in concept, drawing and construction phase. The «Russian mountains» project was the study, including the 1:20 model, of the wood system frames. I also worked with the materials: the nest design from papier-mâché and leaves, the money lamp or the mini safari-tower project; build with the rammed earth and the weathering steel. Furthermore, a project of revalorization of the old roman

fanum in the region of Fribourg is presented. It was an interdisciplinary work with engineer team. I participated in the concept and the design. This work was selected and presented to the administration and the residents of the village. The project of the city valorization in Feldkirch, Austria, was also selected and presented to the authorities in the city hall. Two projects are minimalistic «life» studies design: the house in the forest and the house near the lake. Another selected design proposal is on a different scale and is the project for a commercial center. The Signèse vine-center, at the first phase, is an implantation study. In the portfolio, the model of the site is presented. Other models are also

included: urban installation model made from vax, interior and exterior housing models in different scales.
