WELCOME

Whether you are new to Douglas County or are born and raised here, you understand we have something very special. I fall into the born and raised here category and I am proud to say I have no intention of leaving Carlos Township where I’ve spent most of my life. As chair of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, I believe Douglas County is special because of its people. We have the most entrepreneurial residents of any county in the state. The ongoing willingness of people to open new businesses continues to impress me. Whether it’s a new coffee shop or pizza place in Osakis or a winery in Brandon or Miltona, the work ethic of Douglas County folks is unmatched. I hope all residents and visitors look for products and services in Douglas County first. Of course, our lakes and parks also make Douglas County a very special place. The Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Alexandria is special to my heart and a must-see attraction. As for the lakes, while I haven’t thrown out a line in all of the county’s 351 lakes, I’m working on it. And people don’t have to live on a lake to enjoy one. There are beautiful city and county beaches that allow everyone an opportunity to swim. There are also nearly 70 public access points to launch a boat. For those who like to bicycle, Douglas County is home to the beautiful Central Lakes Trail. It is 55 miles long and takes cyclists past dozens of lakes, restaurants, and shops as they pedal from Osakis to the northwestern point near Melby. In the winter, folks can use the trail on their snowmobile and cruise past the frozen lakes. A great experience all year. For much more information check out the websites www.Alexarealakes.org and www.explorealex.com. It’s also important to give special recognition to our law enforcement, 911 dispatchers, firefighters and first responders. Residents of Douglas County know they are protected around the clock. Our dedicated professionals and volunteers help keep our roads and waterways safe and respond at a moment’s notice to all emergencies. Douglas County understands the importance of partnerships. It partners with five counties to provide reliable transportation with the Rainbow Rider system, which is available for all ages. The county also partners with four other counties to provide exceptional public health services through Horizon Public Health. The county is proud to own a hospital system which is a multi-specialty healthcare provider that includes clinics in Alexandria and Osakis and Heartland Orthopedic Specialists. Residents no longer need to drive out of town to search for services. Alomere Health offers robotic surgery, orthopedic surgery, a cancer center, dermatology, urology, pediatrics, internal medicine and so much more. And, while we are getting quite sophisticated in Douglas County, we still take pride in the values our parents taught us and our understanding that technology can’t solve all of our problems. Take pocket gophers for example. As a youngster, I knew my township paid for pocket gophers because they are destructive little critters. Townships still pay and many energetic boys and girls earn their first paycheck this way. Entrepreneurship starts early in Douglas County. Enjoy all it has to offer! Jerry Rapp Chair, Douglas County Board of Commissioners

MEET

ABBY Originally from Lamberton, MN, Abby Furth was ready to move away and experience new beginnings after graduating from high school and college. She graduated from MSUM in December of 2013 and started searching for a teaching position somewhere in Minnesota. Abby first looked at Alexandria on a whim, not having any relatives or friends in the area. She was quickly amazed with what Alexandria had to offer: lakes, trails, and a variety of shops, restaurants, and stores -- all in one place!

Actively Exploring

Abby teaches 4th grade at Garfield Elementary and helps with community education programs during the school year and throughout the summer. Abby loves exploring new places and being active outdoors. You’ll find her hiking the parks throughout Douglas County, particularly Lake Carlos State Park. Like most residents, she especially enjoys being on the lakes boating, fishing, swimming, tubing, water skiing, and paddle boarding.

Top Reasons to Live Here

When Abby was asked what she liked about living in the community, she said, “I enjoy living in this community because it offers so much to do while also providing a small-town feel. When I first moved here, I was thrilled to find a Target and more than one grocery store right in town instead of having to drive 45+ minutes.” Besides the outdoors, Abby also likes the variety of entertainment the community offers. Through her involvement with the school district, volleyball and softball leagues, gym, and events around the community, she has gone from knowing no one to being able to say hi to someone she knows while running errands.

her ADVICE TO OTHERS

We asked Abby what advice she would give to someone looking to move here. “My last piece of advice is to get out and explore! Between state and county parks, trails, lakes, and unique shops, restaurants, and businesses, there is so much to do with friends, family, and on your own. Try new things and embrace the outdoors and opportunities the community offers.”

Auddy is working as a dining attendant for Knute Nelson at Nelson Gables. She is also a braiding specialist at Art and Soul Hair Design.

Family and Ties to the Area

In 2010 when they were 11 years old, Islande and Auddy were both adopted from Haiti, although from separate families. They went to high school in Morris, MN and graduated in 2018. Both Islande and Auddy were active in many sports and various activities, such as youth group at Morris Evangelical Free church, Bible Camp at Camp Joy, and volunteering at Feed My Starving Children. ECONOMIC & DEMOGRAPHIC SNAPSHOT Finding a community with a proven record of success is important. If you’re in search of a great community to start or move a business, there is no better choice than the Alexandria area.

The Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission works collaboratively to facilitate job growth in our region and offers numerous programs for businesses to move or expand operations within the state. The office provides the support needed to assist in business and community growth, utilizing tools such as tax increment financing, tax abatement, and industrial bonds. They also provide financial assistance through our revolving-loan funds for business startup, growth, and expansion.

Alexandria has received several top business awards, including being named the “#10 Best Place to Start a Business” in Minnesota by Nerdwallet, “City of Excellence” by the League of Minnesota Cities, “2018 Retail Community of the Year” by the Minnesota Retailers Association, and “2019 Best MN Town” by Minnesota Monthly Magazine.

The Alexandria area workforce is made up of approximately 20,600 individuals who live throughout Douglas County and the surrounding region. Throughout 2020 Douglas County consistently saw a low unemployment rate, currently sitting at 4.4%, which is well below Minnesota’s 7.1%.

The Alexandria area has a strong history of entrepreneurship. This area has over 1,400 registered businesses in operation -- and that number continues to grow. From small retail shops to world class manufacturing operations, our business growth is in large part due to innovative and cooperative business owners, excellent access to markets, and a supportive business environment. Local employers draw workers from throughout the region to the area. These individuals not only work in the Alexandria area, but they often shop and receive services here as well. The impact of these regional customers on the local shopping market has allowed the Alexandria area to sustain businesses that would not normally be able to survive in a community of its size.

The median household income level for Douglas County continues to grow. While the gap is lessening each year behind the State of MN ($74,593), the median household income for Douglas County at $60,676 has slightly surpassed the US income level ($60,293).

MEET jim and jan Jim and Jan Pence arrived in Alexandria during the first week of August in 2016. They met their daughter, Katie Dahl, and two grandsons at Big Ole for the “official” welcome to town photo. They had visited Alex several times since Katie and her family moved here in 2012, which was when sonin-law Hans Dahl accepted the position of Lead Pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church.

They Were INVITED

During the Christmas 2015 visit, Katie and Hans presented her parents with an envelope containing ten gifts, each expressing one of the “top ten reasons” they should move to Alexandria. They returned to Washington state outfitted with Alexandria Cardinal gear, gift cards for the movie theater and Caribou Coffee, and motivation to accept the invitation. With another daughter and her family living in Bloomington, and knowing that retirement was looming for both of them, the Pences began transition plans in early 2016.

They Were Welcomed

The ten gifts from their family led to many more gifts once they moved. Their home in Washington sold quickly, and they were in position to have some time to settle in before winter. During their first two weeks here, they received gifts: a stay at a friend’s home on Lake Villard and tickets to Theatre L’Homme Dieu, now one of their favorite local places. New to lake country and eager to learn about the arts in Alex, they were off to a great introduction to lake living and professional theater.

They Feel Connected

Jim and Jan have lived in five states in their nearly fifty years of marriage. Jim, who holds a Ph. D. in English, is a former college professor and administrator who served in leadership positions in four colleges in four states, including Colorado State University-Pueblo in Pueblo, CO, Wartburg College in Iowa, St. Olaf College in Northfield, and Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. In her final job in WA, Jan was the office manager for a large Lutheran church. For many years she volunteered in schools when their children were young.

20

LivingAlexArea.org

Following his career in higher education, Jim started a consulting practice helping churches and non-profit agencies in all forms of planning, including fund-raising. For most of her adult life, Jan has been a volunteer in schools and churches, a devout quilter, and voracious reader. With Jim’s background in leadership and planning, he has been invited to join the boards of Central Lakes Symphony Orchestra and Theatre L’Homme Dieu.

Jan’s background has led her to a book club that meets at Cherry Street Books and is serving as an officer at one of the local chapters of PEO, a philanthropic educational organization for women. In recent months, Jan has made dozens of baby quilts for Calvary newborns and hundreds of face coverings for hospital and clinic workers. And, of course, they are connected to friends at Calvary as well as audiences at the theatre and the symphony.

Jim and Jan talk about the importance of feeling invited, welcomed, and connected in the community which, in turn, gives them a sense of being “at home”. They appreciate the friendships with other multi-generational families with adult children and grandchildren here or nearby. In fact, they believe that Alexandria should market itself as a community where multi-generational families thrive. These family relationships are only enhanced by the small-town atmosphere and the proximity to places their family loves, like the North Shore and the Twin Cities.

MEET

keith bonnie and

Keith and Bonnie Englund live in the western part of the county in the Melby area, residents of Douglas County for many years. Whenever possible, Bonnie is caring for their grandkids, most of them not too far away in the Brandon and Evansville area, as well as Bemidji.

Working Through Retirement

For over 20 years Bonnie worked for the US Postal Service in Alexandria, retiring a few years ago. In 2015 Keith retired as a Service Manager from the Ag equipment business, selling equipment and parts for about 25 years. The first winter after retirement he got bored and decided to run for county commissioner -- and still holds that position today. Bonnie now works one day a week at a thrift store in Ashby, MN. Between grandkids, Keith’s commissioner job, and Bonnie’s side job, they have no trouble staying busy. “We love the community, the people, our home, and all of our family and friends” said Keith.

Top Community

Alexandria has been named one of the top places for retirement living in the nation. Keith and Bonnie agree. They think Douglas County is the number one place in Minnesota to live. “We have most anything you should need and want in our area, and we do hope to get some new businesses back in the mall,” Keith stated. There are many eating and drinking establishments all throughout Douglas County, and Keith believes we have almost every kind of store and business you can imagine. One of the many terrific attributes of the area is education. Keith has no doubt that the education in Douglas County is second to none.

MEET monico and mary Monico and Mary Hernandez moved to Alexandria in December 2016. Mary was no stranger to the beautiful lakes country and snowy winters, as she was born and raised down the road in Osakis. Her husband, Monico, was a migrant from Mercedes, TX and traveled to Iowa for work. “I stumbled upon this beautiful Osakis girl and the rest is history,” Monico said.

Permanent Home

They both work in the area. Monico is a liquid painter for Standard Iron, and Mary is a production lead at SectorSeven. In her position, she cleans and tests used cell phones for resale. The two recently got married in September of 2019 and are excited to begin their lives together and call Alexandria their permanent home, along with their three cats and German Shepherd.

Enjoy the Snow

Like most residents, Monico and Mary savor the calm surroundings and beautiful scenery that the Alexandria area has to offer. Monico said, “We love the small town feeling and the opportunity to get to know our neighbors.” As for advice to anyone looking to move to the area, they said to take a back road and see where it leads. Have fun in the snow because you don't get this beautiful weather everywhere Be sure to meet all the people you can in these small towns.

Top Three Reasons

Monico and Mary’s top reasons for living in Alexandria: it’s a great place to raise a family, the people are very nice and respectful, and there are a lot of great jobs with good pay.

Alexandria... 2018 Retail Community of the Year and in 2019 BEST MINNESOTA TOWN!

Sometimes it’s tempting to keep all the great things that the Alexandria Lakes Area has to offer a secret – but word still manages to get out! In 2018, Alexandria was named Retail Community of the Year by the Minnesota Retailers Association (MnRA). MnRA officials stated, “Alexandria was selected based on the unique partnerships that exist in the community that not only recognize the importance of a strong retail sector as a component of a vibrant area, but for the effort, resources and most importantly the cooperation among those partners. What is truly unique about Alexandria is the retail experiences that are created as the community works together.” And in 2019, Alexandria was named Best Minnesota Town by Minnesota Monthly magazine! Editors said: “It’s a beautiful year-round destination with a rich history and a bright future.”

Bikers, hikers and bird and wildlife watchers and photographers also find a lot to appreciate here. Communities along the trail offer restaurants, convenience stores, restrooms and shelters. Trail heads are located in Alexandria, Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville and include parking areas, restrooms and shelters. The trail connects to the Lake Wobegon Trail, which runs from Osakis to St. Cloud. An additional connection from the Lake Wobegon Trail to the Morrison County Trail has also been completed, resulting in 130 paved miles. centrallakestrail.com

Our Legacy of Hospitality For generations, the Alexandria area served as a summer retreat for some of America’s wealthy families. They arrived by railroad and were transported to luxurious resort-hotels where they were treated with world-class service. The first passenger train arrived here on Nov. 5, 1878. The Great Northern traversed Douglas County east to west, while the Minneapolis-St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie line ran north to south.

For the next half a century, the area was defined by elegant resorthotels featuring chauffeur quarters and American-plan meals, lawn tennis tournaments and lazy afternoons on the lake. Fishing guides, gourmet picnics, live bands, afternoon teas and leisurely rounds of golf were common.

With time, however, resort-hotels gave way to summer cottages and cabin resorts, and new summer traditions were established. But through it all, the Alexandria Lakes Area has remained a haven of relaxation and family entertainment, and is a splendid summertime destination!
