The community started when Scottish pioneers settled along the Potomac River in the early 18th century. The current community got its start in the 1920s when David Howell, from Alexandria, purchased hundreds of acres of land from the Robinson family. Howell built the golf club (now the Belle Haven Country Club) and many residences in the area. Everything residents need can be found at the Belle View shopping center, which has several local restaurants as well as chain stores. The community has an ideal location for commuters, nestled just south of Alexandria and bordered by Route 1 to the west and the George Washington Memorial Parkway to the east.
