The English Major at Spelman College cultivates students' analytical, creative, and communication skills to prepare them for a variety of occupational sectors, which include, (but are not limited to): Public Health Medicine Non-Profit Management Marketing Management and Advertising Public Relations Politics Publishing Journalism Entrepreneurship Entertainment Education Finance Law Film Production Web Development and Design Social Work What makes English Majors so desirable to employers? Our students learn how to develop highly desirable skills. They practice collaboration, writing arguments, constructive criticism, reading and researching critically, as well as showing empathy.

COURSES The English Department offers the opportunity to study a diverse range of literary, cultural, and rhetorical topics such as storytelling, authorship, social movements, ethics, and influence.

THE MAJOR Textual Studies Track Students investigate the meaning of the words 'text' and "literature" in the 21st century by critically reading and analyzing "texts" across a wide range of literary genres, media, historical periods, and cultures.

Writing Studies Track Students investigate the relationship between language, art, design, and technology. They also gain hands-on experience writing in various genres and creating useable multimedia communication

Pre-Professional Programs Students interested pursuing in a secondary education certificate, or preparing for law or medical school can major in English with a special emphasis on interdisciplinary coursework.

Film and Visual Culture Minor Students investigate the historical, theoretical, social, and political aspects of cinematic cultures in a global society. They also produce films.
