WRITING INTENSIVE @ SPELMAN BY PROFESSOR SARAH RUDEWALKER
Welcome to this year's annual Writing-Intensive (WI) Workshop at Spelman College. I'm excited to serve as the chair of the WI Committee, on behalf of the Comprehensive Writing Program. This workshop will provide you with critical resources for teaching writing in your discipline. Whether you are teaching Introductory Biology or Food in the City, writing across the curriculum/writing in the disciplines (WAC/WID) is an initiative that will enable you to strategically address writing in your area of study. We'd love to hear more about your (WAC/WID) experience! There will be dedicated time for you to express how writing works in your field, as well as address your unique concerns about teaching writing. Thank you for your participation! Contact: Dr. Sarah RudeWalker at DrSarahRudeWalker@gmail.com or srudewal@spelman.edu

WH A T IS THE CWP ? The Spelman College Comprehensive Writing Program (CWP) was founded over thirty years ago by Spelman alumni Dr. Jacqueline Jones Royster. Its purpose was to improve Writing Across the Curriculum and support Writing in the Disciplines (WAC/WID). Currently, hundreds of Spelman students are served by the CWP each year. We provide extensive programming to the college, guided by the principle that writing is a powerful tool for thinking, inquiry, and communication. Moreover, the CWP continues to serve Writing-Intensive courses throughout the college. In particular, the CWP operates two major sites of language learning and writing on campus. They are described, as follows: The Spelman College Writing Center The Writing Center is the home of the CWP, but it is not the CWP. Its function is to provide students with access to trained peer tutors and multimedia labs that feature MAC and PC computers, scanners, printers, etc. Curricular Initiatives Spelman College requires all disciplines to participate in Writing-Intensive courses. Two campus-wide commitees support this objective: the First-Year Writing and Writing-Intensive Committees. Campus-wide writing workshops for students are also held throughout the semester to address the unique needs of these courses. Faculty Development opportunities such as this workshop and SpelFolio assessment also strengthen the CWP's curricular initiatives. Other programs and initiatives that are affiliated with the CWP include: SpelFolio, ADW, SWE, The Writing Minor, and Writing as an Area of Deep Study in the English Major.
