DESERT HOUSE 2008 | 7,000sf | Madison Club, La Quinta A vacation home within a developing golf community in La Quinta, CA, the client wanted a modern, yet comfortable, home that would respond to the landscape and climate during seasonal use. The project was conceived as a group of independent pavilions separated by outdoor rooms. Different materials were used for the pavilions; dry-stacked sandstone, charcoal colored board-formed concrete, and cement plaster; and exterior doors that would disappear into pockets. With all of the doors retracted, the main spaces of the house would become outdoor rooms. The design of this house proceeded through design review approval by the community’s board, and a short time later it became a casualty of the recession.

The program includes executive and marketing offices, conference room, design studios, pattern-making and sample sewing areas. The challenge was to organize these areas so that they would function effectively, while simultaneously retaining some of the buildings’ existing infrastructure, including an exterior entrance and interior stairways. The solution involved relocating the main entry to the rear of the central building and creating a circulation path that connects the parking, the new entry, the stairways and the former entry.

2010 | 29 units | competition entry - sustainable senior housing | Novato | standard llp with buro happald | honorable mention A competition entry for low cost, sustainable senior housing in California - Bahia Meadows is a suburban infill project of 29 accessible dwellings and a range of community facilities focused on habitat preservation, agriculture, and local commerce. New buildings are proposed only on existing graded pads, leaving extensive areas of the site dedicated to agriculture and open space, encouraging coexistence with wildlife. Dwellings placed side by side in groups of up to three are informally staggered as they terrace down the slopes. Patios and decks are located at the east and west end of each home, taking advantage of the expansive views, and promoting social interaction between residents next door.

Located in a historic building, the Heisler, the design integrates clean, modern aesthetics with the Bahama lifestyle. Though the store and resaurant have separate entrances there are no barriers between the two once inside. In the retail store wood shutters are used to add warmth and fuction as flexible dividers that allow spaces to be adjusted with different collections. The restaurant has a full bar, lounge, dining area and a transparent kitchen. All furniture and fixtures throughout the interior was custom designed for the client

WESTBROOK AVE This project combines two hillside lots to create a remodeled residence primarily located on the existing home’s graded pad and an artist studio tucked into the natural slope. Because the site slopes away from the street, the studio appears much smaller and preserving the visual corridor from the living spaces. The concept for the site incorporates a minor amount of “landform grading that ties into the natural slope of the site rather than proposing retaining walls. The landscape concept includes the removal of the existing non-native plant material such as ivy, while retaining a large native oak tree as a focal point. The slopes are proposed to be planted with drought tolerant, California native species.

2012 | 20,000 sf | Antwerp This new concept store for Esprit re-connects the brand to it’s California roots through a holistic environment that represents a lifestyle, and communicates a relaxed, free-spirited, socially and environmentally aware atmosphere. Like a well appointed home, this represents the new Esprit “California Home”. The interior of the store is veiled from the outside. A deep entry through large wood doors leads to a bright, airy interior. Just inside, views into the store reveal dramatic and distinct areas within, like a series of rooms in a lived-in home. Floor materials and ceilings transition at interior thresholds, making each area subtly distinct from the next and encouraging exploration.
