Get Down To Work Do things differently at The National Coal Mining Museum
NATIONAL COAL MINING MUSEUM
for England
Get Down to Work... at the National Coal Mining Museum Put aside your briefcase and fasten on your miner’s helmet: you’re going 140m underground to experience life as a miner first-hand.
We have flexible spaces, excellent catering and a team that’s totally dedicated to making sure your meeting, event or conference is one to remember.
This unique experience can be included as part of your meeting or event at the National Coal Mining Museum for England. Now you know why our motto is ‘get down to work’.
Our rates are competitive, our feedback is first class and we have a venue that is sure to get delegates talking!
Located just minutes from the M1 (J39 or J40), close to Wakefield, the Museum, which encompasses a former colliery, is situated in rolling countryside. The Museum immerses you in the life, history and culture of coalmining, from Victorian times to the present day. But it’s also a dedicated conference and events venue, tailor-made for conferences, product launches, staff training and development, private parties, drinks receptions, dinners, adventure days and team building.
We could tell you about our team, but we’d rather let our clients do that... “We could not have asked more of the National Coal Mining Museum as a venue or indeed of you as the Conference Co-ordinator. Always offering a helping hand, you were professional, efficient, understanding and a pleasure to work with.” Victoria Riley Sales & Marketing Manager New Vision

Team Building Our two team building programmes make maximum use of the Museum and its 45 acre site. They can be added to your meeting or event, or booked as stand-alone activities. Take on the Team Discovery Trail, collaborating with colleagues to navigate your way around the Museum finding answers to the quiz sheets – with a prize for the winners.
Or grapple with our Adventure Days, where you’ll work in teams to find treasure hidden by the mythical Mine Manager, Ebenezer Shrogg, at Caphouse Colliery.Your team will need to work together, problem solve, communicate well and travel above and below ground in order to solve the clues. The Museum’s Facilitator will undertake a pre-event consultation and debrief.

More Than Just a Venue Other venues talk about break-out space. We talk about our wide open spaces and nature trail. At the National Coal Mining Museum you can break from business with a tranquil half-mile walk among the birch, oak and ash woodland along the route of the nature trail. Most delegates include an underground tour as part of their day, and it’s hard not to get excited when you’re descending 140m down one of Britain's oldest working mines. Our guides are ex-miners and they’ll show you around the workings, sharing their mining experiences with you.
Get hands on with virtual guides Hector and Frank at Hope Pit and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a real-life, fully restored, 17-hectare colliery, or say hello to our very own pit ponies and learn about the crucial role they played in mining. These are unique experiences awaiting you at the National Coal Mining Museum for England. You might arrive as a delegate, but you’ll leave as an enthusiast.
You can dig deeper into the history of coal-mining and learn more about coal-mining communities in our 1842 and Coal Interface Galleries. Throughout the year, a programme of special exhibitions explores coal-mining culture and heritage in fascinating and imaginative ways.
“When I arrive everything is ready and waiting and I am greeted with the cheeriest of welcomes. It’s by far the best venue I have found. I hope to bring many more groups in the years to come.”
“Our guides are ex-miners and they’ll show you around the workings, sharing their mining experiences with you.”
